1,700 British Scientists Can’t Be Wrong

From the UK Times:

Top scientists rally to the defence of the Met Office

Ben Webster, Environment Editor in Copenhagen

December 10, 2009

The Met Office has embarked on an urgent exercise to bolster the reputation of climate-change science after the furore over stolen e-mails.

More than 1,700 scientists have agreed to sign a statement defending the “professional integrity” of global warming research. They were responding to a round-robin request from the Met Office, which has spent four days collecting signatures. The initiative is a sign of how worried it is that e-mails stolen from the University of East Anglia are fuelling scepticism about man-made global warming at a critical moment in talks on carbon emissions.

One scientist said that he felt under pressure to sign the circular or risk losing work. The Met Office admitted that many of the signatories did not work on climate change.

John Hirst, the Met Office chief executive, and Julia Slingo, its chief scientist, wrote to 70 colleagues on Sunday asking them to sign “to defend our profession against this unprecedented attack to discredit us and the science of climate change”. They asked them to forward the petition to colleagues to generate support “for a simple statement that we . . . have the utmost confidence in the science base that underpins the evidence for global warming”.

Met Office reports on temperature changes draw on the work of the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit, from which the e-mails were hacked. Phil Jones, unit director, has agreed to stand down while an investigation takes place into claims that he manipulated data to exaggerate the warming trend and tried to block publication of alternative views.

One scientist told The Times he felt under pressure to sign. “The Met Office is a major employer of scientists and has long had a policy of only appointing and working with those who subscribe to their views on man-made global warming,” he said.

Professor Slingo denied that the Met Office had put anyone under pressure. “The response has been absolutely spontaneous. As a scientist you sign things you agree with, not because you are worried about what the Met Office might think of you,” she said.

The 1,700 signatories, a fraction of the research scientists working in Britain, include Sir John Houghton, former chairman of the science working group of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Sir Brian Hoskins, head of the Grantham Institute at Imperial College, and Professor Lord Hunt of Chesterton, a climate scientist at University College London.

Professor Slingo said the statement was carefully worded to avoid claiming all climate scientists were beyond reproach. It says the evidence for man-made global warming is “deep and extensive” and comes from “decades of painstaking and meticulous research by many thousands of scientists across the world who adhere to the highest levels of professional integrity”.

Benny Peiser, of the Global Warming Policy Foundation, which claims man-made climate change has been exaggerated, said the petition showed that the Met Office was rattled.

Here is the consequent press release from those 1,700 British scientists, also via the UK’s Times

Statement from the UK science community

December 9, 2009

We, members of the UK science community, have the utmost confidence in the observational evidence for global warming and the scientific basis for concluding that it is due primarily to human activities. The evidence and the science are deep and extensive. They come from decades of painstaking and meticulous research, by many thousands of scientists across the world who adhere to the highest levels of professional integrity. That research has been subject to peer review and publication, providing traceability of the evidence and support for the scientific method. The science of climate change draws on fundamental research from an increasing number of disciplines, many of which are represented here. As professional scientists, from students to senior professors, we uphold the findings of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report, which concludes that "Warming of the climate system is unequivocal" and that "Most of the observed increase in global average temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations".

Somehow we think we have seen this sort of thing before, such as after the publication of Mr. Copernicus’s controversial work, On The Revolutions Of The Celestial Spheres:

Statement from the Polish science community

December 9, 1543

We, members of the Polish science community, have the utmost confidence in the observational evidence for the Ptolemaic system of the geocentric movement of the sun, moon and stars and the scientific basis for concluding that it is due primarily to the hand of God. The evidence and the science are deep and extensive. They come from decades of painstaking and meticulous research, by many thousands of scientists across the world who adhere to the highest levels of professional integrity. That research has been subject to peer review and publication, providing traceability of the evidence and support for the scientific method. The science of astronomy draws on fundamental research from an increasing number of disciplines, many of which are represented here. As professional scientists, from students to senior professors, we uphold the findings of the Vatican’s Fourth Assessment Report, which concludes that "the movement of the celestial bodies around the earth is unequivocal" and that "Most of the eccentric planetary orbits observed since the mid-2nd century are very likely due to the failings of mortals to comprehend our Heavenly Father’s grand scheme".

After all, scientists are never wrong.

By the way, doesn’t the fact that there are so many ‘climate scientists’ just in Britain show what a racket it all is?

Love the way you compare the Science of today with the Polish Science Community of the 1500′s.

Climate Science has the same level of understanding of its topic as a 3-year old child understands an autobile.

For the 3-year old, the car is there, it moves, and mom and dad seem to be able to steer it.

For the Climate Scientists in the CRU, the climate exists, it changes, and unseen forces seem to be able to steer it.

If you put the unknowns about climate on one side of a teeter-totter, and the knowns on the other side, the device would be locked to the ground on the unknown side.

And that’s why I think they like it. It simply can’t be proven. So they can make any asinine predictions that they want.

But at least 3-year olds know what they don’t know, and they are fearful of it.

The Climate Scientists in the CRU are the worst kind of idiots the world has ever known. They will destroy the planet.

When will grown-up Scientists step forward and stop this lunacy.

As Steve’s graphic shows, pro, much can be said for the way the Renaissance papacy viewed science that flew in the face of accepted dogma. According to the scholars, the bible stated for the record (though it never has and never will) that the Earth is center of all things and that the stars, planets and everything revolved around it.

Real science, performed by Copernicus, and later by Galileo refuted this claim quite thoroughly. [Ptolemy] got a pass because his use of epicycles conveniently explained the movement of the heavens while leaving the Earth at the center, but required constant revision and strict faith to keep it working (sound familiar?)

Galileo had a revelation and came up with the Occam’s Razor of planetary motion with the Sun at the center of the solar system.

AGW adherents are the sophistry and papacy of the “scientific” community and it doesn’t take much digging to find their ulterior motive, much the way the papacy had theirs. And, in much the same manner, they both involve money. How to get it, how to keep it.

Time is often the enemy of fiction in cases like these. For indeed the planets were proven to be orbiting the Sun and the burden of proof was NOT on the scientists, as the pope had declared….when he said, “Show me”. Obviously such a demand was bigger than could actually be provided without a lot of understanding on the part of someone who was willing to accept the possibilities. Therefore, much the same stonewalling is evident when reality comes up against a belief system such as AGW. Anthropogenic Global Warming….what a big hokey phrase for crap.

The obvious difference is that the scientists this time are the inscrutable ones; the liars; the clingers to loose beliefs.

I, for one, cling to the adherence that AGW is certainly possible…but there is no evidence to support it, nor is there any to say that man is NOT causing it. Much more work needs to be done. But, the warmists are like the natives who see an airplane land and automatically assume that the pilot is a god. Clearly, the “evidence” says so. What the warmists repeatedly ignore is the one thing an observational scientist must ALWAYS include: CONTEXT.

Well, that’s my uptake anyway. Everything else has already been said but you can no more convince a believer in AGW is bunk than you can any person who adheres strongly to their religion. The two are one and the same. AGW is a belief. No amount of logical argument will sway them. In the next decade, the Earth could be covered with 10 feet of ice and the AGW believers will still be banging their tom-toms over the impending doom of a 1 degree rise in average global temps.

You might as well try to convince a muslim that allah is a janitor.

You’ll achieve the same results. The muslim will hate you and their resolve will only be strengthened. Sadly, AGW has gone past cult status. The only thing that can happen is for time to pass and let it die. There is little that can be done. Obviously, the EPA has made it plain: Regardless of evidence, crap and tax is a go and they openly defy congress, the debating process of a free people and cram it down our throats. A crime, to be sure. But who’s gonna stop them? They have an executive order giving them the power.

      Yay.

      Oh what a country.

“I, for one, cling to the adherence that AGW is certainly possible”

Most rational people would say the same Rusty. The best thing I’ve seen on this was by one of the scientists signing one of the many letters opposing the faux science of the cultist. He had 3 points that I paraphrase:

      - Climate change is real. The earth has been warming since the last Ice Age, and more recently since the recent Little Ice Age. The process is entirely independent of mankind and not controllable by human beings. We don’t know for how long the natrual process will continue. Investigation of the processes is useful.
      - Since climate change is constant, we should view warming as a good thing. Cooling is much worse for mankind (up to limits, of course).
      - Man might be doing something to impact the weather. We simply don’t know if what we do is significant or not. Finding out is a worthy endeavor.

That is the true state of the science and says everything we ought to be doing.

Everything else is a bald-faced lie.

Sounds to me as though the 1700 figure that if they back up the CRU guys, their jobs will be simpler in the future.
Wouldn’t it be so much easier to come to a conclusion and then manufacture data to support it rather than to determine what is happening by gathering data and analyzing it?
This sets science on it’s head!
From now on, researchers can toss ideas out to see what sticks; when they happen upon one that achieves a following, they can make up data to support it.

  6. eaglewingz08

Yep all that research that was summarily destroyed fifteen to twenty years ago, and all that research in Australia which was doctored to make a .7 degree cooling trend over a century suddenly become a 2.4 degree WARMING trend over the same century. Yep rock solid science, if by science you mean the biggest hoax ever to hit the world scientific community in the past one hundred years.

  7. “By the way, doesn’t the fact that there are so many ‘climate scientists’ just in Britain show what a racket it all is?”
You know, to be candid, I apply that same reasoning to all the evolutionists.

“…failings of mortals to comprehend our Heavenly Father’s grand scheme”.

what a pity for scientists to insinuate that we are harming Heaven, or God’s grand scheme. The corruption, evil, immoral, unethical behavior growing in this country is against God’s scheme of righteousness. Doing the right thing. God made the seasons. (weather & man’s life) The earth belongs to the Almighty God. God has consitantly replenished the earth, ended famine, ended drought.
God promises to replenish the earth even after the wars. Fluffy heaven is in the movies. Heaven is omnipresent spiritual world with no boundaries. He is the beginning, the alpha & omega. He is King. All belongs to Him. God can do what he wants, “All” things are possible.
There are things of much greater importance to God than people driving cars. There are many things we can do without. The chemicals growing at enormous pace by scientists can cause more harm than carbons.

We are all mortal beings. If you drive a gas hog, that is not going to be a factor God looks at as to how you live your life. Someone who is deceptive and lies really is bad. Greedy people with gold toilets, 800 dollar pair of tennis shoes, while others starve, may have some explaining to do. Don’t mean to preach. The Golden rule was given by Jesus.

  11. canary

Scientists who spend their studies proving there is no God, have taken the study on prayer to higher test standards. Can’t blame it on positive thinking.
Sick people, not aware they are being prayed for, Those praying for people they do not know, has proved prayer works. So, praying over the weather and other things has power.
Just think, on one day a strange bizarre air-current full of funnels, over & underdrafts, mixed with freezing ice, and baseball hail, lightening, air-traffic control equipment waves messing up, I mean anything is possible.
