NYP: Many Coincidences In Weiner’s Tale

From the New York Post:

Too many coincidences in Weiner’s tale

May 31, 2011

In the New York of the late 1800s, Boss Tweed famously complained about Thomas Nast cartoons: Though many immigrants in the city couldn’t read, even the illiterate could understand “those damn pictures.” Rep. Anthony Weiner and his staff [sic] now face a similar problem.

By now, you’ve heard about the Tweet picture sent from Weiner’s account to a young lady named Gennette Nicole Cordova. The congressman has insisted his accounts were “hacked.” Cordova, in a statement released late Sunday night (36 hours after the tweet in question), says, “The account that these tweets were sent from was familiar to me. This person had harassed me many times after the congressman followed me on Twitter.” She also said that her previous tweet, “I wonder what my boyfriend @repweiner is up to,” was a joke.

Housing Index Expected To Hit A New Low

The New York Times tries to prepare us for more bad housing new:

Case-Shiller Index Expected to Show New Low in House Prices

Published: May 31, 2011

SAN FRANCISCO – The desire to own your own home, long a bedrock of the American Dream, is fast becoming a casualty of the worst housing downturn since the Great Depression.

Damn that downturn.

Even as the economy began to fitfully recover in the last year, the percentage of homeowners dropped sharply, to 66.4 percent, from a peak of 69.2 percent in 2004. The ownership rate is now back to the level of 1998, and some housing experts say it could decline to the level of the 1980s or even earlier.

But no one is to blame.

Mr. Weiner Wanted To Boot ‘Sexist’ Statue

For some reason this New York Daily News article from last February seems oddly relevant:

Pols say selling ‘sexist’ Queens statue on craigslist would be a civic virtue

By Lisa. L. Colangelo
Friday, February 25th 2011

The statue, depicting a naked man representing ‘civic virtue’ trampling the twin sirens of ‘vice’ and ‘corruption,’ has been called sexist by some.

A controversial Queens statue, featured as an "Eyesore Next Door" in the Daily News, should be sold through an online classifieds site, according to a group of elected officials.

U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner said the city should ditch the statue, "Triumph of Civic Virtue," because it is "sexist."

Other descriptions of this statue describes the hero as "well endowed." So maybe Mr. Weiner resented the competition.

Karzai: No More NATO Airstrikes On Houses

From a cheering Associated Press:

Afghan president seeks to limit NATO airstrikes

By Heidi Vogt And Rahim Faiez, Associated Press
May 31, 2011

KABUL, Afghanistan – Angered by civilian casualties, Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Tuesday he will no longer allow NATO airstrikes on houses, issuing his strongest statement yet against strikes that the military alliance says are key to its war on Taliban insurgents.

Note to the terrorists: hide in houses.

The president’s remarks follow a recent strike that mistakenly killed a group of children and women in southern Helmand province. He said it would be the last.

"From this moment, airstrikes on the houses of people are not allowed," Karzai told reporters in Kabul.

At long last Mr. Obama will have help in stopping our military’s relentless war on innocent civilians which he too has decried for so long.

NY Maid Charges Egyptian With Sex Assault

From an amazed Reuters:

Egyptian charged with sex assault of NY hotel maid

May 31, 2011

NEW YORK (Reuters) – An Egyptian businessman and one-time head of a major Egyptian bank has been charged with sexually assaulting a hotel maid at a luxury New York City hotel, police said.

You know, if they aren’t careful, bankers are going to get a bad name.

The arrest Monday of Mahmoud Abdel-Salam Omar came two weeks after former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was charged with trying to rape a hotel maid at another upscale Manhattan hotel.

Is it a copy-cat crime or a copy-cat charge?

Omar, 74, is accused of assaulting the maid when she delivered tissues that had been requested to room 1027 about 6 p.m.

Obama Gave Fannie, Freddie Execs Millions

From the Center for Public Integrity’s iWatch News:

Obama’s Millions for Fannie, Freddie Execs. But Who’s Counting?

Obama administration approves $34 million in compensation without market analysis of executive pay

By John Solomon and Julie Vorman
Thu May 26, 2011

NEW YORK – The Obama administration’s approval of $34.4 million for six top officials, with little or no market guidance, is raising new questions about the inner workings of the failing mortgage giants. John Solomon and Julie Vorman, of the Center for Public Integrity’s iWatch News, report.

Over the last two years, the Obama administration has approved a whopping $34.4 million in compensation to the top six executives of the financially troubled Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac mortgage giants, and lacks the necessary protections to ensure such compensation is even warranted.

Lech Walesa ‘Passes’ On Obama Meeting

From the Agence France-Presse:

Lech Walesa snubs Obama, fellow Nobel winner

May 27, 2011

WARSAW (AFP) – Lech Walesa, Poland’s Solidarity-era legend, ex-president and 1983 Nobel Peace Prize winner said Friday he would not accept an invitation to meet with fellow Nobel winner US President Barack Obama.

"It’s difficult to tell journalists what you’d like to say to the president of a superpower. This time I won’t tell him, I won’t meet him, it doesn’t suit me," Walesa told Poland’s public broadcaster TVP.

Obama is due to arrive in Poland later Friday after the G8 summit in France.

Walesa was originally scheduled to meet Obama Saturday along with other key figures in Poland’s post-1989 transition from communism to democracy.

According to sources close to Walesa, he was expecting a personal invitation from Obama, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 shortly after taking office.

Closed Porn Star Clinic Will Give Referrals

Another installment of the saga of obtaining reliable health care in today’s America, ripped from the pages of a relieved Associated Press:

Porn trade group has plan for actor health care

By Shaya Tayefe Mohajer [sic], Associated Press Thu May 26, 2011

LOS ANGELES – Porn performers will soon be given a list of recommended health care providers for their frequent sexually transmitted disease testing, and results will be fed into a new industry database, according to a porn trade group.

Free Speech Coalition [sic] Executive Director Diane Duke said Thursday her group will oversee the database as part of a new program intended to fill the gap created by the closure of Adult Industry Medical Health Care Foundation earlier this month.

They haven’t gotten an Obama-Care waiver?

US/EU To Give $20B To The ‘Arab Spring’

From an endlessly generous (with other people’s money) Associated Press:

Rich nations to offer $20B for Arab Spring

By Greg Keller, Associated Press – Fri May 27, 2011

DEAUVILLE [sic], France – The Group of Eight rich nations will offer about $20 billion in pledges and commitments for Arab countries that have thrown out autocrats and are struggling to build new democracies, European officials said Friday…

Only $20 billion dollars? Now we know why they call it, ‘Dough-ville.’ Still, note how the AP includes the United States as one of the "rich nations." Even though we are the largest debtor nation in the world – and by a wide margin.

Incidentally, the oil exporting countries of the Middle East are the fourth largest holders of American debt.

Courts Ban/Allow Crosses/Jesus In Public

First we have these tidings from a surprisingly sanguine Fox News:

New Jersey School and ACLU Compromise on Graduation at Christian-Owned Site

By Lauren Green
May 26, 2011 | FoxNews.com

School officials in Neptune Township, N.J., have bowed to the demands of the ACLU and will cover decades-old religious signs posted in the historic Great Auditorium to allow a 70-year tradition of high school graduations to continue.

Instead of the sign, "Holiness to the Lord," a banner will be posted over it saying, "Neptune Township School District … A Community of Learners." In addition, a banner with the words "So Be Ye Holy" will be covered with another banner saying, “Neptune High School: A School of Excellence and No Excuses."

The new banners are meant to appease the American Civil Liberties Union, which had demanded the school district remove all religious signs and symbols from the Methodist-owned auditorium in Ocean Grove, claiming it made non-Christians attending public school graduations feel uncomfortable…

The conflict began after the grandmother of one of last year’s graduates complained not only about the large white cross adorning the top of the buildings’ facade, but of the religious signs inside, and what she felt was a heavily religious tone to the ceremony, which included student-led invocations and the singing of Christian hymns, most notably "Onward Christian Soldiers."

The school agreed to cut out the student-led invocations and the hymns.

Biden: ‘Ramrod’ Obama Coming Into Focus

From the Nashua (NH) Telegraph:

Vice President Biden in Nashua for fundraiser

By JAKE BERRY Staff Writer
May 26, 2011

NASHUA – … Speaking to a crowd of more than 300 at a Democratic Party fundraiser

Wow. Mr. ‘Bite Me’ sure does pack them in.

[Biden] assured the audience that the 2012 elections are shaping up to resemble the 2008 race, in which Democrats took the White House and both houses of Congress as well as sweeping the New Hampshire elections.

And never mind those 2010 elections which turned New Hampshire dark red again.

The economy is turning around slowly, Biden said. More Americans are returning to work, and the death of Osama bin Laden has reinforced the strong leadership of Obama, who will drive Democrats to victory down the ballot in next year’s elections, he said.

SCOTUS Backs AZ On Illegal Alien Hiring

From a deeply saddened CNN:

Supreme Court backs Arizona immigration law that punishes businesses

May 26, 2011

Washington (CNN) — The Supreme Court has backed an Arizona law that punishes businesses hiring illegal immigrants, a law that opponents, including the Obama administration, say steps on traditional federal oversight over immigration matters.

The 5-3 ruling Thursday is a victory for supporters of immigration reform on the state level…

You would think the Democrats on the court would want to "punish businesses" at every opportunity. But apparently, not.

The hiring case turned on whether state law tramples on federal authority.

"Arizona has taken the route least likely to cause tension with federal law," wrote Chief Justice John Roberts. "It relies solely on the federal government’s own determination of who is an unauthorized alien, and it requires Arizona employers to use the federal government’s own system for checking employee status."

Arizona passed the Legal Arizona Workers Act in 2007, allowing the state to suspend the licenses of businesses that "intentionally or knowingly" violate work-eligibility verification requirements.

County Judge Strikes Down WI Union Law

From a cheering (albeit, union-busting) Associated Press:

Wisconsin judge strikes down union law; state Supreme Court to hear arguments next month

May 26, 2011

MADISON, Wis. – A judge has struck down a law taking away nearly all collective bargaining rights from most Wisconsin state workers.

Dane County Circuit Judge Maryann Sumi ruled Thursday that Republican legislators violated Wisconsin’s open meetings law during the run up to passage. She says that renders the law void.

The law pushed by Gov. Scott Walker takes away all bargaining rights except over base salary for teachers and other public workers.

The decision is not the end of the legal fight. The state Supreme Court has scheduled arguments for June 6 to determine whether it will take the same case.

28 Dead, 700 Flee Gang Battles In Mexico

From the ‘mi country is su country’ gang at the Associated Press:

28 dead, 700 flee as gang battles hit west Mexico

By Gustavo Ruiz, Associated Press
May 26, 2011

MORELIA, Mexico – Fierce fighting among apparent rival drug gangs in western Mexico bloodied one highway with 28 dead, while in a nearby state more than 700 people huddled in shelters after fleeing villages that had become battlegrounds…

Police in Nayarit initially responded to a citizen complaint of a kidnapping by a group of armed men, who fled on a federal highway near the town of Ruiz in the central part of the state, according the state prosecutors office… Police found 28 men lying dead and four others wounded on the road littered with bullet casings from high-powered weapons and 10 abandoned vehicles

Earlier in the day, an official in the nearby western state of Michoacan said drug cartel violence had prompted frightened villagers there to flee hamlets and take refuge at five shelters set up at a church, event hall, recreation center and schools… Michoacan state Civil Defense Director Carlos Mandujano said about 700 people spent Tuesday night at a primitive water park in the town of Buenavista Tomatlan, with most sleeping under open thatched-roof structures

Residents told local authorities that gunbattles between rival drug cartel factions had made it too dangerous for them to stay in outlying hamlets.
