OR Got $5M Bonus For Food Stamp Sign Ups

From Judicial Watch:

State Gets $5 Mil Bonus For Food Stamp Sign Up

Thu, 09/29/2011

In its quest to promote taxpayer-funded entitlement programs, the Obama Administration has actually rewarded one state with a $5 million bonus for its efficiency in adding food-stamp recipients to already bulging rolls.

It’s part of the administration’s campaign to eradicate “food insecure households” by improving access and increasing participation in the government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)…

Just a few months ago the federal agency that administers the program, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), launched a multi-million-dollar initiative to recruit more food-stamp participants even though the number of recipients has skyrocketed in the last few years.

This week Oregon officials bragged that the USDA has given the state $5 million in “performance bonuses” for ensuring that people eligible for food benefits receive them and for its “swift processing of applications.” The money comes on the heels of a separate $1.5 million award from the feds for making “accurate payments of food stamp benefits to clients.”

It marks the fifth consecutive year that Oregon has been “recognized” by the federal government for “exceptional administration” of the entitlement program, according to the announcement posted on the state’s Department of Human Services web site.

Shark Victim’s Mom: PETA Is ‘Over The Top’

From Fox News:

Mother of Shark Attack Victim Says PETA Campaign Is ‘Over the Top’

By Joshua Rhett Miller
September 29, 2011

A Florida mother whose 21-year-old son survived a shark attack last week says a planned PETA campaign in response to the incident is "over the top."

But Ella Wickersham, of Longboat Key, Fla., told FoxNews.com she will not give the proposed billboard by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals — "Payback Is Hell, Go Vegan" — any thought since her focus is on the recovery of her 21-year-old son, C.J. Wickersham, who remains in stable condition after being bitten by a bull shark on Saturday while spear-fishing near Florida’s Anna Marie Island.

"I’m not even going to dignify them with a response," she told FoxNews.com.

Durbin: Dems Don’t Have Votes For ‘Jobs Bill’

From Chicago’s radio station WLS-AM 890:

Durbin on Obama jobs bill: We don’t have the votes

Bill Cameron
9/29/11

CHICAGO (WLS) – On Tuesday, President Barack Obama tried to keep the pressure on Congress to consider his nearly $450 billion jobs bill, saying it had been two weeks since he sent the bill to Capitol Hill "and now I want it back."

"I want it back, passed, so I can sign this bill and start putting people back to work," Obama said Tuesday. So why have Democrats delayed action in the U.S. Senate on President Obama’s stimulus bill?

How odd to hear this admitted out loud. Of course this is just a local radio station.

WLS Radio’s Bill Cameron reports his own party has delayed action in the Senate and talked with Senator Dick Durbin, the number two Democrat in the Senate, about the reason why.

Michelle Obama shops at Washington-area Target

September 30, 2011

WASHINGTON (AP) — Attention Target shoppers: You could have been standing in line with Michelle Obama.

The first lady, hard to recognize in a baseball cap and sunglasses, shopped Thursday at a Target store in Alexandria, Va., just outside Washington.

Casually dressed Secret Service agents arrived about a half-hour before Mrs. Obama, who walked in through the main entrance with an assistant. She spent 30 to 40 minutes shopping, pushing her own cart. She apparently was recognized only by the cashier who rang up her purchases.

Yemen: Al Qaeda’s Al-Awlaki Has Been Killed

From a dejected Associated Press:

Yemen says al-Qaida-linked cleric al-Awlaki killed

By AHMED AL-HAJ [sic] – Associated Press
September 30, 2011

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — Yemen’s Defense Ministry said Friday that the U.S.-born al-Qaida cleric Anwar al-Awlaki has been killed.

Every news report on this story has managed to work in ‘US born’ within the first five works of their lede paragraph. But read more about his background below to get an idea of what a total misrepresentation this is.

The Yemeni ministry provided no details in the statement, which appeared on one of its website.

Yemeni security and tribal officials said an airstrike thought to have been carried out by U.S. aircraft on Friday targeted a convoy of cars traveling in the eastern province of Marib but could not say whether al-Awlaki was in the convoy…

The American-born son of Yemeni parents rose to prominence as al-Qaida’s English-speaking voice and electronic messenger, spreading its terrorist credo via a blog, social media posts and email exchanges with such people as the U.S.

Census Overestimated ‘Same-Sex’ Households

From some pickers of nits at the Chicago Tribune:

Census Bureau backtracks on number of same-sex households

By William Mullen
September 27, 2011

Mistakes made on some 2010 census forms led the U.S. Census Bureau to report an "artificially inflated" number of same-sex households in August, census officials said Tuesday.

While the Census Bureau reported 901,997 same-sex households nationally in August, new calculations of the 2010 census indicate there are 648,464 such households.

They were only off by 39%. But who’s counting? It’s not like it’s a census or anything.

Besides, if you don’t jack up the numbers your special interest group might not get all the federal benefits it’s due.

In Illinois, the same-sex household total was revised downward from 32,469 to 23,049.

More Solar Loans Tied To Democratic Donors

From the plucky Daily Caller:

More solar companies led by Democratic donors received federal loan guarantees

By John Rossomando
09/29/2011

A Daily Caller investigation has found that in addition to the failed company Solyndra, at least four other solar panel manufacturing companies receiving in excess of $500 million in loan guarantees from the Obama administration employ executives or board members who have donated large sums of money to Democratic campaigns…

Companies like First Solar, SolarReserve, SunPower Corporation and Abengoa SA have already, collectively, received billions in loans through Obama administration stimulus programs to build solar power plants in the southwestern United States.

Yet each, with the exception of the privately held SolarReserve, has seen its stock price hammered at the same time it was lobbying the Obama administration and Congress for billions in loan guarantees.

Obama Rushes Through $1B In Solar Loans

From The Hill:

Energy Department approves $1 billion in solar energy loan guarantees

By Andrew Restuccia – 09/28/11

The Energy Department announced Wednesday that is has finalized more than $1 billion in loan guarantees for two separate solar energy projects…

DOE announced a $737 million loan guarantee to help finance construction of the Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project, a 110-megawatt solar-power-generating facility in Nye County, Nev. The project is sponsored by Tonopah Solar, a subsidiary of California-based SolarReserve.

The Energy Department said the project will result in 600 construction jobs and 45 permanent jobs.

By our calculation that adds up to $16.3 million dollars per ‘permanent job.’ Which seems a bit steep, even by government standards.

“If we want to be a player in the global clean energy race, we must continue to invest in innovative technologies that enable commercial-scale deployment of clean, renewable power like solar,” Energy Secretary Steven Chu said in a news release.

DC Tax Employee Accused Of Stealing $400K

From the Washington Post:

Former Washington tax office employee charged with stealing more than $400,000

By Associated Press, Published: September 28

WASHINGTON — A former employee of the D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue has been charged with stealing more than $400,000.

Mary Ayers-Zander was charged Monday with wire fraud. Prosecutors say in court documents that from 2007 to 2011 Ayers-Zander accessed taxpayer accounts and entered fraudulent changes that resulted in credits. The vast majority of the refunds the individuals were credited with went directly to Ayers-Zander’s bank accounts, though she also issued refunds that went to individuals.

Ayers-Zander was charged by information, suggesting a plea deal is in the works

Even though this is listed as an AP story, it only appears in the Washington Post.

Muslim Planned To Bomb Pentagon, Capitol

From those tireless defenders of the faith at the Associated Press:

Feds: Mass. man planned to blow up US buildings

By JAY LINDSAY
September 29, 2011

BOSTON (AP) — A Massachusetts man with a degree in physics was charged Wednesday with plotting to blow up the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol using remote-controlled airplanes filled with explosives.

Rezwan Ferdaus [sic], 26, was arrested in Framingham after undercover federal agents delivered materials he had allegedly requested, including grenades, six machine guns and what he believed was 24 pounds of C-4 explosive. Federal officials said the public was never in danger from the explosives, which it said were always under control and closely monitored…

Isn’t it a little peculiar that the AP does not mention Mr.

Top Bin Laden Aide Was Freed By Pakistan

From the UK’s Telegraph:

Osama bin Laden’s bodyguard freed by Pakistan

Pakistan has freed a senior al-Qaeda commander, who served as a bodyguard to Osama bin Laden, according to a senior security source, raising fresh questions about the country’s commitment to tackling terrorism.

By Rob Crilly, Islamabad, Ashfaq Yusufzai in Peshawar and Dean Nelson in New Delhi
28 Sep 2011

Amin al-Haq, who escaped from Afghanistan with the al-Qaeda leader in 2001 and went on to become a key financial aide, was detained in Lahore three years ago by Pakistan’s intelligence agency.

A senior security source in the north-western Pakistani town of Peshawar, where he had been held, said the Inter-Services Intelligence agency had passed al-Haq on to the police before he was released earlier this month.

AP: Obama Must Be More Partisan This Time

From an utterly shameless Associated Press:

Obama grapples with memories of 2008 hope, change

By ERICA WERNER, Associated Press
September 27, 2011

DENVER (AP) — Remember when Barack Obama first ran for president and people were really into him?

This is what passes for a ‘lead’ in today’s world of journalism.

Obama remembers it, too, but not the same way some of his supporters do.

Bidding for re-election in tough economic times, Obama says there is some "revisionist history" going on about how great that first race was.

Apparently, just about everyone is mistaken about just everything – except for Mr. Obama. By the way, this is also what sociopaths think.

His strategy is to bring disillusioned supporters back into the fold by addressing their feelings of discouragement head-on and reminding them they signed up for something tough to begin with — even if now they just remember the "hope" and "change" posters…

The approach is one Obama almost has to take if he’s to reconcile memories of his historic 2008 campaign with the dispiriting realities of governing a divided country amid a sagging economy and unemployment topping 9 percent.

Dem Gov Says: Suspend Congress Elections

From a frantically spinning (Raleigh, NC) News & Observer:

Perdue jokes about suspending Congressional elections for two years

2011-09-27

File this in the random-things-politicians-say file. Speaking to a Cary Rotary Club today, N.C. Gov. Bev Perdue suggested suspending Congressional elections for two years so that Congress can focus on economic recovery and not the next election.

"I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won’t hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover. I really hope that someone can agree with me on that," Perdue said. "You want people who don’t worry about the next election."

The comment — which came during a discussion of the economy — perked more than a few ears.
