AP: Letters To OWS Prove ‘Broad’ Support

From the full time propagandists at the Associated Press:

Letters to Occupy protesters span broad spectrum

By CRISTIAN SALAZAR – Associated Press
October 31, 2011

NEW YORK (AP) — Bette Snyder is nourishing the Wall Street protesters from her kitchen in northwestern Ohio.

For the past three weeks, the 69-year-old woman has sent the occupiers of Zuccotti Park tins of home-baked cookies and messages of support.

"Here are some cookies for the demonstrators," she wrote in a note accompanying one of the tins. "I will keep sending them as long as you keep protesting."

The protests at a park in lower Manhattan that have been raging for about a month are inspiring people across the country and around the world to send letters of support — even if they are only a few words on a scrap of paper with a tin of cookies.

Snowstorm, Cold Makes Life In Zuccotti Park Difficult For OWS Protesters

Cold, Drenched OWS Members Ask Homeless For Winter Weather Survival Tips

October 30, 2011

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Saturday’s snow storm made life in Zuccotti Park miserable for Occupy Wall Street protesters.

Demonstrators were left drenched with rain and then snow as the storm moved through the region. Central Park set a record for both the date and the month of October with 2.9 inches of snow.

Those camping out in the park have been stockpiling donated blankets, scarves, coats and have been trying to get more tents, cots and tarps.

According to an “urgent” alert on their website, OWS is looking for a number of other donations, including waterproof boots, gloves, hats, hand and foot warmers and disposable foot covers among other things.

Libya Confirms Presence of Chemical Weapons

From an unfazed Associated Press:

Libya’s PM confirms presence of chemical weapons

October 30, 2011

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — Libya’s interim prime minister on Sunday confirmed the presence of chemical weapons in Libya and said foreign inspectors would arrive later this week to deal with the issue.

Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril said Libya has no interest in keeping such weapons.

“We would like to assure you that the new Libya will be a peaceful Libya and that it is in our interest to have no weapons in Libya,” he told reporters.

Last week, Ian Martin, the top U.N. envoy to Libya, told the U.N. Security Council that undeclared chemical weapons sites have been located in Libya.

At the time, he also expressed concern over command and control of chemical and nuclear material sites…

Cain Camp Denied Report Of Sex Harassment

From a chortling Associated Press:

Cain denies report of sexual harassment

By KASIE HUNT – Associated Press
October 31, 2011

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain planned to make several scheduled appearances in Washington on Monday following a report that alleges he was twice accused of sexual harassment while he was the head of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s.

Oddly enough, Mr. Cain is scheduled to appear today at a lunch at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. Of course, the timing of the Politico piece was just a coincidence.

In a statement Sunday to The Associated Press, his campaign disputed the Politico report that said Cain had been accused of sexually suggestive behavior toward at least two female employees.

2 Women Accused Cain Of ‘Sexual Behavior’

From a crowing Politico:

Exclusive: 2 women accused Herman Cain of inappropriate behavior

By: Jonathan Martin and Maggie Haberman and Anna Palmer and Kenneth P. Vogel
October 30, 2011

During Herman Cain’s tenure as the head of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s, at least two female employees complained to colleagues and senior association officials about inappropriate behavior by Cain, ultimately leaving their jobs at the trade group, multiple sources confirm to POLITICO.

"At least two"? What an interesting way to put this, Politico.

The women complained of sexually suggestive behavior by Cain that made them angry and uncomfortable, the sources said, and they signed agreements with the restaurant group that gave them financial payouts to leave the association.

"Sexually suggestive behavior" could be anything.

Firemen Take Generators From Occupy NYC

From an outraged New York Daily News:

Occupy Wall Street protesters stripped of their power, literally, by fire department and NYPD

By Christina Boyle
Friday, October 28th 2011

The city has stripped Occupy Wall Street protesters of their power. Dozens of firefighters and police officers entered Zuccotti Park Friday morning to confiscate generators and gas canisters.

Fire trucks and police vans pulled up on the corner of Broadway and Liberty St. at about 8.30 a.m. and asked the Occupy Wall Street protesters to bring the items to them, saying they were a health and fire hazard.

"They made an announcement on a bullhorn saying: ‘We are here to take the generators, could you please bring them up to us on the corner of Broadway and Liberty Street’," said James Bennett, a member of the information working group.

GOP Bigger, More Conservative Than In 2008

From Gallup:

Republicans Nationwide Are Similar in Composition to 2008

Remain more likely to be conservative, married, and religious

by Frank Newport, Jeffrey M. Jones, and Lydia Saad
October 28, 2011

PRINCETON, NJ — The Republican Party in 2011 looks similar, demographically and ideologically, to the Republican Party that nominated John McCain in 2008.

Got it? So don’t go off and try to nominate some Tea Party kook. Pick another winner, like Mr. McCain.

As a group, Republicans continue to be more likely than average to be male, white, married, and religious, and to describe their political views as "conservative."

Complete with "scare quotes."

These results are based on a special Gallup analysis of the demographic and ideological composition of the U.S.

Reuters Calls 3QTR 2.5% GDP ‘Pumped Up’

From a walking on air Reuters:

Consumers and businesses pump up third-quarter growth

By Lucia Mutikani | Reuters
October 27, 2011

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The economy grew at its fastest pace in a year in the third quarter as consumers and businesses stepped up spending, creating momentum that could carry into the final three months of the year.

The expansion was a welcome relief for an economy that looked on the brink of recession just weeks ago, although part of the pick-up came from a reversal of factors that held back growth earlier in the year, and analysts worry about 2012.

U.S. gross domestic product grew at a 2.5 percent annual rate in the third quarter, up from a 1.3 percent pace in the prior three months, the Commerce Department said on Thursday.

NATO To End (Kill Gadhafi) Mission Monday

From a triumphant Reuters:

NATO confirms decision to end Libya mission on Monday

By David Brunnstrom
October 28, 2011

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – NATO confirmed Friday it would end its Libyan mission next week, seven months after launching air and sea operations that helped bring the overthrow and death of Muammar Gaddafi.

We thought that NATO only went into Libya to create a ‘no fly zone’ to protect innocent civilians from being bombarded by Gadhafi’s forces. Isn’t that what the UN mandate said?

Were we misled?

Ambassadors from the 28 NATO states meeting in Brussels formalized a preliminary decision reached a week ago to end the mission that NATO took over on March 31 on October 31.

"Our military job is now done," NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in a message on Twitter confirming the decision.

Protests Follow Islam Party Victory In Tunisia

From an irony proof Agence France-Presse:

Violent protests in Tunisia after election result

By Mariette le Roux
October 18, 2011

Tunisia’s Islamist Ennahda party got to work on Friday on forming a coalition government amid violent protests after the party won a strong mandate in the Arab Spring’s first elections.

And probably their last, since this Ennahda party now has the power to re-write Tunisia’s constitution in their own image.

While victory celebrations were underway, the party offices in Sidi Bouzid, the birthplace of the Tunisian revolution, were targeted by youths upset after candidates belonging to rival party were disqualified by election authorities.

Why were they protesting at the Ennahda party offices? Why not at the election monitors offices? (We’re joking, of course.)

Late-night results showed Ennahda, banned under dictator Zine el Abidine Ben Ali, took 90 of the 217 seats, or 41,47 percent, in an assembly that will rewrite the constitution and appoint a president and a caretaker government…

Fourth place, or 19 seats, went to the Petition for Justice and Development, a grouping of independents led by Hechmi Haamdi, a rich London-based businessman said to have close ties to Ben Ali.

MD Considers Tripling ‘Toilet Flushing Tax’

From the Annapolis, MD, Capital-Gazette:

Task force considering ‘flush fee’ increase

By PAMELA WOOD, Staff Writer
Published 10/26/11

The state may double or even triple the "flush fee" over the next several years.

In order to make massive pollution cuts required under the federal government’s Chesapeake Bay pollution diet, more money needs to be raised for modernizing sewage plants, upgrading septic systems and fixing stormwater problems.

And a state task force is moving toward recommending the flush fee increase to make those cuts.

So this is being brought about by federal regulations.

The flush fee, or Bay Restoration Fund, amounts to $30 per year for homeowners, usually paid through quarterly water and sewer bills.

The task force, which has been meeting since spring, might raise the fee to $60 in 2013 and $90 in 2015

And people are up in arms over Bank Of America’s $5 a month ($60 a year) ATM fees?

Gadhafi Family To File War Crimes Complaint

From an outraged Agence France-Presse:

Kadhafi family to file NATO war crimes complaint

Wed, Oct 26, 2011

Moamer Kadhafi’s family plans to file a war crimes complaint against NATO with the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the alliance’s alleged role in his death, the family’s lawyer said Wednesday…

Excellent. We hope this means we can look forward to the harridans from Code Pink and the fellow travelers trying to put the cuffs on Mr. Obama, Hillary Clinton, and other members of the Obama administration every time they venture out in public.

Marcel Ceccaldi, a French lawyer who previously worked for Kadhafi’s regime and now represents his family, told AFP that a complaint would be filed with the Hague-based ICC because NATO’s attack on the convoy led directly to his death.

Tea Party Paid For Park OWS Using For Free

From Virginia’s Richmond Times-Dispatch:

Tea party group says city favors Occupy Richmond protesters

October 27, 2011

The Richmond Tea Party is lashing out at Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones for what it sees as the city’s preferential treatment of the Occupy Richmond protesters encamped at Kanawha Plaza.

Even though the office of Richmond’s mayor seems to require candidates to be ‘independent,’ according to the Virginia Public Access Project and many other sources, Mr. Jones is a Democrat.

Minister Jones is also an African-American. (Which we only note because of the Tea Party is often accused of racism. And, for the record, Mayor Jones is also a fulltime Baptist Minister.

The tea party group is sending Jones an invoice for the charges incurred for the Tax Day rallies it has held at the plaza the past three years, arguing that the Occupy Wall Street offshoot group squatting there has been using the park illegally and free of charge since Oct.
