Gitmo Detainees Get $750,000 Soccer Field

From Fox News:

Guantanamo detainees get new $750G soccer field

By Catherine Herridge
February 28, 2012

At a time of record deficits, a new soccer field for detainees at Camp 6 in Guantanamo Bay is just getting the finishing touches — at a cost of $750,000 to taxpayers

When we were kids we would have killed to have such a fancy field. Come to think of it, that’s what they did.

The project began in April 2011 and is due to finish this spring. The detainees will now have three recreation facilities at Camp 6, which is home to "highly compliant" detainees who live in a communal setting.

Just in time for ‘Arab Spring Training.’

In addition to an indoor recreation field and the existing outdoor recreation field, the new soccer field — selected because it is such a popular sport with detainees — is half the size of an American football field.

Energy Czar Thinks He’s In The Auto Business

From an unfazed Politico:

Chu: DOE working to wean U.S. off oil, not lower prices

The Energy Department isn’t working to lower gasoline prices directly, Secretary Steven Chu said Tuesday after a Republican lawmaker scolded him for his now-infamous 2008 comment that gas prices in the U.S. should be as high as in Europe.

By the way, where are all the alternative fuel vehicles coming out of Europe? I haven’t seen any. They have had high gas prices for decades. Where is all their new car technology?

Instead, DOE is working to promote alternatives such as biofuels and electric vehicles, Chu told House appropriators during a hearing on DOE’s budget.

Mr. Chu seems to be confused. He is the Secretary of Energy, not the Secretary Of Transportation or the Secretary Of Automobile production.

Global Warming Is Making The World Colder

From the true believers at the Agence France Press:

Melting Arctic causes snowier winters in Europe, the US

February 28, 2012

MELTING sea ice in the Arctic may be causing the snowier winters the northern hemisphere has experienced in the last two seasons.

As the ‘climate skeptic’ Anthony Watts noted at his website, the original headline for this AFP article was: "Global Warming Is Making The World Colder." But apparently ‘cooler heads’ prevailed, and they caught the unintentional absurdity of it all.

But, really, why not blame colder winters on ‘global warming’? They have blamed everything else on it. In fact, ‘global warming’ is to our current era what radiation was to the sci-fi and monster movies of the 1950s and 1960s. And just as believable.

DNC/CNBC: Markets Anticipate Obama Win

From CNBC:

Markets Start to Anticipate Obama Victory in November

By: John Melloy
February 29, 2012

While President Obama may not be Wall Street’s ideal candidate, stock prices are rising on growing expectations he will be re-elected this November.

Part of that, market pros say, is simply that investors feel more certain about who will be in the White House for the next four years and which policies they will have to deal with.

And investors simply cannot wait for the ‘Taxageddon’ in January 2013.

Obama’s chances of winning in November increased to above 60 percent on Tuesday, up from about 50 percent at the beginning of the year, according to the odds on prediction market

Meanwhile, the S&P 500 has hit a new bull market high and is up 9 percent on the year

You see the correlation?

Fed: 5 Years To get 6% Unemployment Rate

From an unquestioning Reuters:

Could take 5 years to get 6 percent unemployment: Fed’s Pinalto [sic]

By Jonathan Spicer
February 28, 2012

(Reuters) – The U.S. economic recovery is "frustratingly slow" and it could take four to five years to ratchet the unemployment rate down to about 6 percent, from more than 8 percent now, a top Federal Reserve official said on Tuesday.

The recovery is held back by the housing market and Europe’s debt crisis among other headwinds, but monetary policy is now appropriately positioned to eventually achieve this "maximum employment" level, said Cleveland Fed President Sandra Pianalto.

If we could just put some wind turbines up to take advantage of all of these ‘headwinds’ we have suddenly gotten under Obama, we wouldn’t have an energy crisis.

China Plans ‘Gentler’ Threats On Child Policy

From China’s People’s Daily:

Gentler reminders to replace ugliness

By Li Qian
February 27, 2012

China has launched a program to replace harsh slogans, which sometimes even threaten criminal acts, that some officials use to promote the country’s one-child policy.

Instead it wants to substitute with milder expressions in an effort to "avoid offending the public and stoking social tensions."

The program, named "face-washing project," initiated by the National Population and Family Planning Commission, aims to phase out those eye-sore slogans involving violent threats and replace them with "friendly" expressions, the People’s Daily reported yesterday.

In our country our propagandists call it ‘re-branding’ or ‘recalibrating the optics.’

Some local officials in rural areas have come up with nasty slogans to intimidate couples planning to have more than one child.

1 Doc Accused Of Bilking Medicare For $375M

From the Associated Press:

7 accused of bilking $375M from Medicare, Medicaid

February 29, 2012

DALLAS (AP) — A Texas doctor has been charged with running a massive health fraud care scheme with thousands of fraudulent patients and intermediaries allegedly offering cash, food stamps or free groceries, to bilk Medicare and Medicaid of nearly $375 million.

That is wrong. Food stamps should only be used to buy votes.

A federal indictment unsealed Tuesday charges Jacques Roy, a doctor who owned Medistat Group Associates in DeSoto, Texas, and six others in an alleged scheme to bill Medicare for home health services that were not properly billed, not medically necessary or not done.

The scheme was the largest dollar amount by a single doctor uncovered by a task force on Medicare fraud, authorities said.

Stockton May Be Biggest City To Go Bankrupt

From the Associated Press:

Stockton could become biggest city to go bankrupt

February 29, 2012

Calif. (AP) — The city of Stockton in California’s crop-abundant Central Valley has the second-highest foreclosure rate in the nation and one of the highest crime and unemployment rates. It was named America’s most miserable city in a national magazine — twice.

Besides crops, what else is the area abundant in, we wonder? (Hint: illegal aliens.)

And now, officials say this river port city of 290,000 is on the brink of insolvency and could become the nation’s largest city to fall into Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection.

The City Council voted late Tuesday to use a new California law to enter mediation with its creditors.

South Leg Of Keystone Pipeline To Go Ahead

From a dancing as fast as they can Reuters:

TransCanada chops up Keystone XL to push it ahead

By Jeffrey Jones and Roberta Rampton
February 27, 2012

CALGARY/WASHINGTON (Reuters) – TransCanada Corp said on Monday it will build the southern leg of its $7 billion Keystone XL oil pipeline first, skirting a full-blown U.S. review and giving President Barack Obama ammunition to hit back at Republicans who have blasted his energy policy.

Er, how does this give Obama any "ammunition"? It is not like it was his idea. TransCanada has just figured out a way to get around his obstruction. At least for a small part of their pipeline.

Building the portion of the contentious pipeline that would run to Texas refineries from the Cushing, Oklahoma, storage hub before the northern section would help remove a pinch-point that has led to deep price discounts for U.S.

Obama Out To Triple Military Healthcare Ins

From Bill Gertz, who is now the senior editor of the Washington Free Beacon:

Obama to cut healthcare benefits for active duty and retired US military

Bb Bill Gertz – February 27, 2012

The Obama administration’s proposed defense budget calls for military families and retirees to pay sharply more for their healthcare, while leaving unionized civilian defense workers’ benefits untouched.

We have been saying that this was coming for some time now. You simply cannot cut $1 trillion dollars from the Pentagon’s budget, and not cut healthcare benefits, which like with every other organization, make up a lion’s share of the Pentagon’s spending.

But note how “unionized civilian defense workers’ benefits” will not be cut. (As we have suggested before, maybe the military should unionize.

75% Think The Rich Should Pay Lower Taxes

From The Hill:

Hill Poll: Likely voters prefer lower individual, business tax rates

By Peter Schroeder – 02/27/12

Three-quarters of likely voters believe the nation’s top earners should pay lower, not higher, tax rates, according to a new poll for The Hill.

The big majority opted for a lower tax bill when asked to choose specific rates; precisely 75 percent said the right level for top earners was 30 percent or below.

The current rate for top earners is 35 percent. Only 4 percent thought it was appropriate to take 40 percent, which is approximately the level that President Obama is seeking from January 2013 onward.

Only 4% agree with Obama, which is probably within the poll’s margin of error. So it is possible that nobody in this poll actually agreed with Obama’s plan to tax ‘the rich’ at 40%.

GOP Frets Over Romney’s Conservative Tack

From The Hill:

GOP frets Romney’s conservative tack could hurt in November general election

By Cameron Joseph – 02/28/12

Republicans are worried that Mitt Romney’s increasingly conservative rhetoric on a number of hot-button issues could hurt him in the general election.

Their fear is that while Romney’s position on matters like immigration, collective bargaining and social issues could boost him among conservative primary voters, thereby getting him the nomination, it could come back to haunt him with swing-state voters during the general election.

“He has to think about his words [coming] back at him in the general election,” said GOP strategist Ford O’Connell. “Job No. 1 is to win nomination, but the question is, at what cost?”

(Ford O’Connell is a man even the Politico says they have never head of, and whom they mock for his shameless self-promotion.)

The former Massachusetts governor has fully embraced Arizona’s controversial immigration law — a move that will likely help him in that state in Tuesday’s primary but could alienate Hispanic voters — and vocally opposed the DREAM Act, which would allow some undocumented immigrants brought here as children to receive in-state college tuition.

NYT 2006: Dems Exploit Anger At Gas Prices

From the archives of the New York Times:

Democrats Eager to Exploit Anger Over Gas Prices

April 24, 2006

WASHINGTON, April 20 — Democrats running for Congress are moving quickly to use the most recent surge in oil and gasoline prices to bash Republicans over energy policy, and more broadly, the direction of the country.

With oil prices hitting a high this week and prices at the pump topping $3 a gallon in many places, Amy Klobuchar, a Democratic Senate candidate in Minnesota, is making the issue the centerpiece of her campaign. Ms. Klobuchar says it "is one of the first things people bring up" at her campaign stops.

To varying degrees, Democrats around the country are following a similar script that touches on economic anxiety and populist resentment against oil companies.

Farrakhan ‘Warns’ Of Obama Assassination

From the Chicago Tribune:

Louis Farrakhan warns of racial hatred that could lead to attempts to kill President Obama

By Dan Hinkel
February 27, 2012

In a fiery lecture to thousands of followers of the Nation of Islam on Sunday in Chicago, Minister Louis Farrakhan warned that racial hatred could lead to attempts to assassinate President Barack Obama.

Farrakhan spent much of his oration decrying what he cast as Satan’s influence over racist forces in politics and society before asking a pointed rhetorical question: "Do you think they’re wicked enough to be plotting our brother’s assassination as we speak?"

By the way, where is the outrage about Farrakhan talking about Satan?

Farrakhan delivered his speech to an enthusiastic crowd of adherents packed loosely into the United Center for the Nation of Islam’s annual observance of Saviours’ Day, which celebrates the birth of the faith’s founder, W.

Obama Blames Koch Bro For High Gas Prices

From The Hill:

Kochs: ‘Disturbing behavior’ from Obama camp looks to limit free speech

By Jonathan Easley – 02/25/12

Conservative activists and oil magnates Charles and David Koch slammed the Obama campaign for what they called “disturbing behavior” that is “at odds” with “the constitutional right to free speech.”

The allegations were made in an open letter written by Phillip Ellender, president of public affairs for the Koch Companies, in response to a fundraising letter from Obama campaign manager Jim Messina, in which Messina accused the Kochs of bankrolling “Tea Party extremism” and profiting from “jacking up prices at the pump.”

A new conspiracy has been uncovered by Obama’s "Truth Team"!

The letter took a less nuanced position against the Obama campaign claim that the Koch brothers were responsible for rising prices at the gas pump, an issue the president’s rivals have tried to pin on him in recent weeks.
