By Ben Klayman | Mon Jul 30, 2012

DETROIT – General Motors Co signed a sponsorship deal with Manchester United on Monday after rewording the terms negotiated with the popular English football club by the U.S. automaker’s ousted global marketing chief.

Under the seven-year jersey sponsorship deal starting in 2014-2015 for the Chevrolet brand, GM will pay $60 million to $70 million a year, said a person with knowledge of the contract who asked not to be identified. GM also will pay the club a $100 million activation fee, making the deal’s total value worth as much as $600 million, the person said…

GM announced on May 31 that Chevy would take over as Manchester United’s automotive sponsor, replacing Volkswagen’s Audi brand.

DC Pays Students $5.25 For Summer School

From the Washington Examiner:

D.C. students being paid for summer school

By Lisa Gartner | Sunday July 29, 2012

The District is paying 305 students with poor academic and behavioral records to attend summer school, The Washington Examiner has learned.

The rising ninth-graders are earning $5.25 an hour to participate in the "Summer Bridge" program, which targets students identified by D.C. Public Schools as less likely than their peers to graduate high school within four years.

Which sounds to me like bad behavior is being rewarded. Especially when you consider that the unemployment rate for youths in the District is over 50%, and even higher for black youths.

By the way, the minimum wage in Washington, DC is $8.25. Luckily, there is a special rate for ‘youths’ is $4.25, for the first ninety days of employment.

Illegal Aliens Have 1 In 6 Recidivism Rate

From Fox News:

Illegal immigrants often returning to jail after release, study shows

Tuesday July 31, 2012

Roughly one in six illegal immigrants is re-arrested on criminal charges within three years of release, according to new government data being released Tuesday.

The findings, obtained by Fox News, are contained in reports by the Republican-controlled House Judiciary Committee and nonpartisan Congressional Research Service. They are the result of the committee’s subpoena request for Department of Homeland Security records from October 2008 to July 2011.

The information was analyzed by the CRS, which also broke down the information for criminal immigrants — legal immigrants who committed crimes and were arrested again over the three-year period. Together, the two groups also had a roughly one-in-six recidivism rate.

AP: Obama Has Slave Blood, On Mom’s Side

From a joyous Associated Press:

Obama could be descended from African slave

By PAUL FOY | Monday July 30, 2012

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A team of genealogists has found evidence that President Barack Obama could be a descendent of an African slave — but not through the lineage of his black father, the most likely route researchers had followed and exhausted.

The link, genealogists with Ancestry.com said Monday, is, in fact, through an examination of his white mother’s family history. "We were surprised and excited to make that connection," said Joseph Shumway, a member of the Utah-based Ancestry.com team.

Obama’s father was from Kenya and his mother was from Kansas. It had been generally assumed that the president had no slave ancestors because researchers couldn’t find it through the lineage of his father.

Reporters Heckle Romney At Polish Holy Site

From ABC News:

Mitt Romney Spokesman Tells Reporters ‘Kiss My …’ at Polish Holy Site

By Emily Friedman | Tuesday July 31, 2012

WARSAW, Poland – A Mitt Romney spokesman reprimanded reporters traveling with the candidate on his six-day foreign trip, telling them to “kiss my a**” after they shouted questions from behind a rope line.

As Romney left the site of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw and walked toward his motorcade parked in Pilsudski Square, reporters began shouting questions from the line where campaign staffers had told them to stay behind, prompting traveling press secretary Rick Gorka to tell a group of reporters to “kiss my a**” and “shove it.”

He later apologized.

Remember all the grief the reporter from the Daily Caller, Neil Munro, got for asking Obama a question while he was in the midst of announcing some new diktat in the Rose Garden last month?

DOD Doesn’t Need To Warn About Layoffs

From an unquestioning Associated Press:

Labor Dept. says no need for warning on layoffs

By Sam Hananel | Monday July 30, 2012

WASHINGTON — The Labor Department said Monday that federal contractors do not have to warn their employees about potential layoffs from across-the-board budget cuts that could begin on Jan. 2.

In a guidance letter, the agency said it would be "inappropriate" for employers to send such warnings because it is still speculative if and where the $110 billion in automatic cuts might occur. About half the cuts would be in defense.

The letter comes days after a Pentagon official said Defense Department contractors could be sending their workers layoff notices four days before the Nov. 6 presidential election. That prospect has unnerved the White House because it would affect thousands of defense workers in presidential battleground states such as Florida, North Carolina and Virginia.

NYT: Doctors Aren’t Practicing In Poor Areas

From the New York Times:

Doctor Shortage Likely to Worsen With Health Law

By ANNIE LOWREY and ROBERT PEAR | Saturday July 28, 2012

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — In the Inland Empire, an economically depressed region in Southern California, President Obama’s health care law is expected to extend insurance coverage to more than 300,000 people by 2014. But coverage will not necessarily translate into care: Local health experts doubt there will be enough doctors to meet the area’s needs. There are not enough now.

Other places around the country, including the Mississippi Delta, Detroit and suburban Phoenix, face similar problems. The Association of American Medical Colleges estimates that in 2015 the country will have 62,900 fewer doctors than needed. And that number will more than double by 2025, as the expansion of insurance coverage and the aging of baby boomers drive up demand for care.

Bloomberg Makes Hospitals Hide Baby Bottles

From the New York Post:

Mayor Bloomberg pushing NYC hospitals to hide baby formula so more new moms will breast-feed

By MARY KAY LINGE | Saturday July 28, 2012

The nanny state is going after moms. Mayor Bloomberg is pushing hospitals to hide their baby formula behind locked doors so more new mothers will breast-feed.

Starting Sept. 3, the city will keep tabs on the number of bottles that participating hospitals stock and use — the most restrictive pro-breast-milk program in the nation.

Apparently, a woman’s ‘choice’ only applies to aborting babies, not how you feed them.

Under the city Health Department’s voluntary Latch On NYC initiative, 27 of the city’s 40 hospitals have also agreed to give up swag bags sporting formula-company logos, toss out formula-branded tchotchkes like lanyards and mugs, and document a medical reason for every bottle that a newborn receives…

Won’t this harm poor and minorities the most?

Bill Clinton Gets A Role In Dem Convention

From the New York Times:

Bill Clinton to Have Leading Role at Party’s Convention

By JEFF ZELENY | Sunday July 29, 2012

WASHINGTON — Former President Bill Clinton is set to play a central part in the Democratic convention, aides said, and will formally place President Obama’s name into nomination by delivering a prime-time speech designed to present a forceful economic argument for why Mr. Obama deserves to win a second term.

People seem to forget that Clinton is only a slightly better orator than Obama. In fact, Clinton’s debut on the national stage was at the 1988 Democrat convention, where his long speech nominating Michael Dukakis was so boring when he finally said, "in conclusion," the audience burst into cheers and applause. So maybe history will repeat itself.

GM Using ‘Subprime Loans’ To Boost Sales

From Investors Business Daily:

GM Ramps Up Risky Subprime Auto Loans To Drive Sales

By DAVID HOGBERG | Friday July 27, 2012

President Obama has touted General Motors (GM) as a successful example of his administration’s policies. Yet GM’s recovery is built, at least in part, on the increasing use of subprime loans.

The Obama administration in 2009 bailed out GM to the tune of $50 billion as it went into a managed bankruptcy.

Near the end of 2010, GM acquired a new captive lending arm, subprime specialist AmeriCredit. Renamed GM Financial, it has played a significant role in GM’s growth. The automaker is relying increasingly on subprime loans, 10-Q financial reports shows.

Potential borrowers of car loans are rated on FICO scores that range from 300 to 850.

Romney Declares Jerusalem Capital Of Israel

Speaking of ‘wimps,’ Romney has declared that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.

From an outraged Associated Press:

In Israel, Romney Declares Jerusalem to Be Capital

By KASIE HUNT | Sunday July 29, 2012

(AP – JERUSALEM) — Standing on Israeli soil, U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Sunday declared Jerusalem to be the capital of the Jewish state and said the United States has “a solemn duty and a moral imperative” to block Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability.

“Make no mistake, the ayatollahs in Iran are testing our moral defenses. They want to know who will object and who will look the other way,” he said. “We will not look away nor will our country ever look away from our passion and commitment to Israel.”

The presidential election hovered over the speech.

Obama Canceled Bin Laden Raid Three Times

From the Daily Caller:

Book bombshell: Obama canceled Bin Laden ‘kill’ raid three times at Jarrett’s urging

By David Martosko | Sunday July 29, 2012

At the urging of Valerie Jarrett, President Barack Obama canceled the operation to kill Osama bin Laden on three separate occasions before finally approving the May 2, 2011 Navy SEAL mission, according to an explosive new book scheduled for release August 21. The Daily Caller has seen a portion of the chapter in which the stunning revelation appears.

In "Leading From Behind: The Reluctant President and the Advisors Who Decide for Him," Richard Miniter writes that Obama canceled the “kill” mission in January 2011, again in February, and a third time in March. Obama’s close adviser Valerie Jarrett persuaded him to hold off each time, according to the book.

Romney Vows To Return Churchill Bust To WH

From the Weekly Standard:

Romney: ‘Looking Forward to the Bust of Winston Churchill Being in the Oval Office Again’

By DANIEL HALPER | Thursday July 26, 2012

At an event in London, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said, "I’m looking forward to the bust of Winston Churchill being in the Oval Office again."…

President Obama famously sent Churchill’s bust back to Britain soon after coming into office. As the Telegraph reported then:

"A bust of the former prime minister once voted the greatest Briton in history, which was loaned to George W Bush from the Government’s art collection after the September 11 attacks, has now been formally handed back.

The bronze by Sir Jacob Epstein, worth hundreds of thousands of pounds if it were ever sold on the open market, enjoyed pride of place in the Oval Office during President Bush’s tenure.
