28 Dead, 700 Flee Gang Battles In Mexico

From the ‘mi country is su country’ gang at the Associated Press:

28 dead, 700 flee as gang battles hit west Mexico

By Gustavo Ruiz, Associated Press
May 26, 2011

MORELIA, Mexico – Fierce fighting among apparent rival drug gangs in western Mexico bloodied one highway with 28 dead, while in a nearby state more than 700 people huddled in shelters after fleeing villages that had become battlegrounds…

Police in Nayarit initially responded to a citizen complaint of a kidnapping by a group of armed men, who fled on a federal highway near the town of Ruiz in the central part of the state, according the state prosecutors office… Police found 28 men lying dead and four others wounded on the road littered with bullet casings from high-powered weapons and 10 abandoned vehicles

Earlier in the day, an official in the nearby western state of Michoacan said drug cartel violence had prompted frightened villagers there to flee hamlets and take refuge at five shelters set up at a church, event hall, recreation center and schools… Michoacan state Civil Defense Director Carlos Mandujano said about 700 people spent Tuesday night at a primitive water park in the town of Buenavista Tomatlan, with most sleeping under open thatched-roof structures

Residents told local authorities that gunbattles between rival drug cartel factions had made it too dangerous for them to stay in outlying hamlets. The latest reports said arsonists were burning avocado farms in the nearby town of Acahuato…

Several displaced people said they would stay at the shelters all week before considering going back to their villages. "I am not scared, but my children are," said a mother, who asked not to be quoted by name because of fear of retaliation

But don’t worry. The Obama administration is determined to look out for the citizens of the border states.

From ABC News:

DOJ Tells Arizona it Illegally Obtained Death Penalty Drug

May 25, 2011

Hours before the scheduled execution of an Arizona death row inmate, the Department of Justice informed the state that it should not use a controversial drug as part of the execution protocol because the state had illegally obtained the drug from a foreign source.

Mr. Holder is looking out for ‘his people.’

The last-minute move stunned lawyers for convicted murderer Donald Beaty who had argued for months that Arizona hadn’t been in compliance with federal law regarding the importation of sodium thiopental, one of the three drugs commonly used for lethal injection executions. The drug is no longer manufactured in the U.S.

Because the drug company that produced it does not believe in capital punishment. At least that is what they say sometimes.

The Arizona Supreme Court delayed Beaty’s scheduled execution by several hours and Beaty is now set to die at 7:30pm MST

In a filing with the Arizona’s Supreme Court the state’s Attorney General said that it in order to "avoid questions about the legality " of the drug it had decided to comply with the request from United States Associate Deputy Attorney General Deborah A. Johnston.

In the filing it said it planned to substitute another fast-acting barbiturate, pentobarbital, for the sodium thiopental. Arizona law allows it to change its protocol without hearings and legislative review required by some other states

Gosh, those Arizonans have a lot of spunk.

"Arizona’s eleventh-hour switch to another execution drug is unconscionable," says [Natasha Minsker, director of the ACLU of Northern California’s Death Penalty Policy Program]… "A death penalty in any state that disregards both federal law and basic concepts of fairness makes a mockery of justice in our whole country."

Well, the ACLU are certainly experts about making a mockery of justice.

However, the good news is that despite the ACLU and the Obama administration’s best efforts, Mr. Beaty did in fact join the ‘choir invisible’ yesterday evening.

First, Donald Beaty is NOT a relative. We don’t even spell our last names the same way. Second, why is the Northern California ACLU sticking its nose in an ARIZONA execution?

  2. Rusty Shackleford says:

Hey, Eric the Red, you can go stuff it, pal.

    Bring back drawing and quartering.

Beaty was convicted of the rape and murder of 13-year-old Christy Ann Fornoff in 1984. She was a paper girl and a neighbor of Beaty — at the time of her disappearance, he participated in the search for her, and feigned concern while attending the funeral.

His last words were: “I just want to say to the Fornoff family, I’m sorry, I’m sorry. God will let you see her again. Freddy, I love you, I kept my promise. Thank you for being here for me.”

Freddy is Beaty’s brother, who was a witness. He tearfully mouthed ‘I love you’ to members of his family, and then turned to the Fornoffs and mouthed ‘I’m sorry.’

The Fornoff family finally got an apology from their daughter’s killer. Carol Fornoff told us that in 27 years, Beaty had never expressed regret or asked for forgiveness.

Beaty asked for a hefty last meal — he had a beef chimichanga with salsa and guacamole, a double cheeseburger with all the fixings, fries, 14 ounces of rocky road ice cream, and a diet Pepsi.

The Fornoff family says they finally have peace — an end to the nightmare — one that almost didn’t come.

    • Liberals Demise says:

      A diet Pepsi?
He had a last meal of heart clogging junk and topped it off with a diet Pepsi?
      Gee…..I wonder why?

    • JohnMG says:

They probably sterilized the needle used for the injection………just so’s he wouldn’t get hepatitus,, too. The authorities should have been feeding him junk food for the last 27 years and let him die of a massive coronary, while an audience of witnesses applauded. Death by firing squad armed with Daisy ‘Red Ryders would have been too good for this vermin.

      Good riddance!

“Gun most likely were purchased across the border, at gun shows, where there is a background check loophole.”
“If it weren’t for guns, 28 people would still be alive today.”
“Lawmakers have suggested more strict gun control laws, but the mean ‘ol GOP will block it in the house.”
“Remember that Arizona Congresswoman who was shot? Guns were involved in that incident too.”
