There are a few Dems I know in the military, not bloody many. If you like decent equipment, you vote R. If you like support from DC, you vote R. If you like to see pay raises, you vote R. If you are a lefty, and don't care about the nation (or your oath) as a whole, you vote D, and then ETS. The left WANTS this nation to fail. What is wrong with them?!?! This is (or was) the greatest chance of success on the face of the Earth. All up to you, pass or fail, all up to you. Do so many think they'll fail as to want a piece of what those who succeed will gain? "It's not fair, waah." Get off your ass and work for it. This is exactly why socialism doesn't work. "Why bother? I'll still get mine." And then nothing gets done. Human nature.

Hey, good comments from all of you. Thanks,LMGS, you're right. I automatically assume a Dem is a liberal, making me a walking, talking contraditiion.
I wonder if there is a web site somewhere that shows the demographics for our Soldiers and whether they are mostly registered dems or reps.
Anyone out there smarter than me that could find this data?

canary,

I think you should change Democrat in your post to liberal and you would be closer to the truth. I served with many honest, patriotic guys who were Democrats.

I disagree with alot of the posts on what party our soldiers belong to.
The military votes helped Bush get elected.
I was a medic, my father a medic, and we are Republicans. During some medical training at Ft. Sam Houston most every soldier voted Republican.
During the period of non-war prior to 9/11, the military was stricter, and education
benefits were not as high. Non war periods pay is less, benefits less. Contracts vary all the time. Amount of time you must serve, etc. Bush changed the
contracts, which wasn't right, and so most of the Democrats got out when they could and did not re-enlist, and records showed major drop in Democrats enlisting. Those in military vote for the man, who supports the military and defense the most. Republican. Afro-Americans have dropped to the lowest number ever, because most of them are democrats, so that lowers the number of democrats. Of course during the draft of Vietnam it was a different ball game as to voting. But, nearly daily I keep up with the soldiers who lose their life. Nearly daily, they are white. I don't as much as I used to. My sniper hero who just re-enlisted, who is an African American, gung-ho lifer, but, he voted for Obama. Still, he is one smart, patriotic soldier, and amazing .I will keep up with daily brigades and things with lot's of photos. I believe this is the most educated military we've ever had.

The enormous number of troops re-enlisting and going back, I believe are Republicans. None of this I'm not gonna fight the white man's war. All the democrats I know, were against any war. I mean they thought it was wrong to hang Saddam Hussien, and I have to point out that the U.S. did not hang him.
They still go around saying that we had it coming. That violence breeds violence. They don't want us over there. And all the Democrats around me now say that it's Bush's fault that Obama did not keep his campaign promises. You can not reason with these kind of people about anything anyways. So, you can google the subject to get a better idea. I'm just giving my opinion. Because, when I was young, the rebellious, gangy type, druggies, hippies, school drop-outs would never join the army because they don't like to be told what to do.
Served with alot of the best black people in the world. This post isn't to be racist, just trying to explain something I thought was normal, about military votes mostly Republican.

And the post I posted on the military wanting to stay over there that Obami wrote. You know if a soldier or two had said we should give up, he'd have painted that picture. The soldiers we have over there, the ones that come home, they don't complain. They are a different elite breed of Americans. I just wish we they could fight the war without a hand tied behind their back.

PR,

Perhaps the percentages aren't an exact reflection of American society so the term "cross section" isn't perfect, but there are folks from every segment of society in the military as you know. I'm sure that such things as whether there is a shooting war going on or not will skew those percentages one way or the other. I served with many who were there for the college tuition and no other reason whatsoever.

Don't forget, all of these soldiers are potential domestic terrorists. That's why the libs don't want to count their votes. I never missed getting a ballot when I was in Germany in the 70's but seeing as my home state at the time was Ohio, a bastion of union activity my vote was probably discarded once they saw the return address.

God Bless our brave men and women in uniform and keep them safe.

Yeah, she was something else. Her father was a Chaplain in the Air Force so I don't know where she picked up her views. She did say she was much happier when her husband was stationed at a hospital instead of a Brigade Unit. I never really thought to ask her why. In the end though we don't keep in touch with them. It was a friendship I didn't want to pursue and I would have not been in touch with her in HI if my husband wasn't so insistent on having her husband be our daughter's doctor. He wasn't a good one and she was in and out of the hospital almost dying twice. When they PCS'd she got a different doctor who actually gave a darn and she improved dramatically. I believe her husband was of the same mindset.

“ground pounders and their conservative views”.

wow.

What could be more disgusting than a military lib who is contemptuous of those who put their lives on the line.

Makes you want to do a Jimmy Cagney on her.

The day after the 04 election I had lunch with my daughter's doctors wife (we had been in the same unit at Fort Stewart & had hosted two coffees together so we knew each other fairly well) and when I arrived at the Chilli's at Pearl Ridge she was balling. Knowing that they were also going through IVF at the time I thought perhaps she had had another "failed" attempt and that was the reason for her tears. I asked her what was wrong and she was balling because Bush had won again. I thought it was a joke at first and she told me she was indeed serious. I told her my husband said he was getting out if Kerry had won and she made some comment regarding "ground pounders and their conservative views". I told her I was in under Reagan, another ground pounder and back for a short stint to Kuwait in 1990-91 and that the majority of "ground pounders" were Republicans. Yeah, there were a few people I served with who voted for Mondale & Dukakis, but again we were still relatively young.
It's true the libs do seem to speak up more often but they also tend whine a lot more too. A friend of mine who went straight to boot camp the Tuesday after graduation from high school and retired as an E-9 , a few years ago said that in his experience the biggest trouble makers were always liberals or ones who whined about actually having to go to NTC or on a deployment when they were just there for "the college benefits".
In my limited experience on active duty the majority of people I served with were conservative and as a spouse it's been a similar situation. The vast majority of Medical and JAG Corps are liberal unless they happened to have been in a "ground pounder" or Seaman in a previous life.

Well, there are a lot of people with a lot of political persuasions in the military. The biggest recruiting tool, year after year is the Montgomery GI Bill, and since that makes a monetary incentive rather than a patriotic reason to join the military, of course there are people of all stripes in uniform trying to get that money. However, in the military, as in life, the liberal outliers are far more vocal than the silent majority of people who love America and believe in God and family. You will always know who the Obama supporter is in a unit, but you might not hear anything from the 5 or 6 guys who think Bush was a good President. And by far and large, not nearly enough of those people are voting and having their votes counted.

"It is a cross section of American society plain and simple"

The polls say otherwise. Now, as any reader of S&L postings knows, I don't believe the polls very often, but when they go against the MSM persuasiion, I figure they are a hekuva lot more reliable.

And I don't buy the "cross section" bit at all. To think looney libs go into the military in the same numbers as people from conservative families just doesn't make sense. The comment is simply unsupportable.

Most people go into the military for these reasons:
1. They see it as a good career opportunity,
2. It's common in their family and background,
3. They are patriots, and/or
4. They are attracted to the risk and danger.

Points 2 and 3 are reasons that make it more likely the person will be more conservative than liberal. One can argue for point 1 as well, since if a young person is already looking at a career, that person is more likely to have common sense than most. I don't know about point 4, but somehow, I don't see looney libs, with their love of safety nets on every corner, being big risk-takers or danger-seekers.

So I can't think of a single reason that the military is a cross-section of the country. And the polls agree.

The comments here and elsewhere about younger military people being more liberal are true, but that is true in general for the country. Young people haven't learned life's lessons and believe the 48x7 propaganda drummed out by the msm and their brainwashed teachers. But that is further evidence of the conservative nature of the military, since in recent years, the average age has increased. And in society in general, as age increases, conservatism increases.

I saw your post Lurkin. I agree with your points about the military's political persuasions. It is a cross section of American society plain and simple. Was that way when I was in and I'm sure it still is today.

I'm not sure the military votes overwhelming Republican/Conservative. I've been doing this military thing for 34 years and know a whole lot of democrat/liberals. The vast majority of the foot soldiers (E-1 to E-5) are rather young and they tend to be more liberal due to youth, unless they come from a very conservative family. Soldiers may be more conservative than the vast majority of the demoncraps, (after all, they are serving a great cause) but they live in a socialist society in the military and many of them are comfortable with the things the military provided (socialist society) and think the US should be just like military society. The vast majority of Soldiers are pretty damn good at following orders without question. What party follows orders without question from their ACORN friends?
I'm not talking down my soldiers. The majority of them are great men and women.
I was raised in a Democrat family. I registerd as a democrat. I then voted for a fellow by the name of Ronald Reagan, and we all know how that turned out.
The absentee voting thing needs to be changed, but then, from what was seen from this past election, we need more a lot more emphasis and watchful eyes at polling places.
A German friend of mine (prior to the election) had a daughter who was doing a class project on the election and asked me to pass around a questionaire concerning the election, i.e. who my co-workers would vote for in the election. Obambi won in this completely non-scientific survey, and my work group is pretty conservative. The problem was that the conservatives would not vote for John McCain. When we run true conservatives, we usually win. Why have dem light when you can have a REAL socialist type dem who will free the world?
Yea, long post, and most of you won't see it anyway due to the time difference. That's why I don't post so often anymore, but read the posts everyday.
