50K Inmates, $130M Refunds On 0 Wages

From an unfazed Associated Press:

50,000 inmates claim tax refunds, report no wages

December 1, 2010

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nearly 50,000 prison inmates claimed more than $130 million in tax refunds this year without providing any wage information to the IRS, a government investigator says in a report to be released Thursday.

The Treasury inspector general for tax administration stops short of saying the refunds were fraudulently claimed. It does, however, say the Internal Revenue Service should investigate further.

Yes, we don’t want to jump to conclusions. After all, exactly how different is this from ‘Earned Income Credit’?

The report is the latest in a series of audits looking at prison inmates claiming tax credits and other government payments. It notes that the IRS identified nearly 250,000 fraudulent tax returns during the 2010 filing season — a 50 percent increase over 2009 — preventing $1.48 billion in fraudulent refunds

Which could also simply mean that tax fraud is doubling, rather than that the IRS is getting more efficient at stopping it.

The IRS issued a statement saying the agency takes refund fraud seriously and aggressively fights it

And yet practically every month we get stories about how prison inmates are bilking the system out of millions. (See the related links below.)

What kind of a job is the IRS doing if it can’t even prevent fraud from people behind bars? After all, the government has total control over their every communication.

Meanwhile, if you make even the tiniest error filling out your TurboTax forms, you are certain to be in for a year long cavity search from the same IRS.

That is, if your name is not Charlie Rangel or Timothy Geithner.

I’ve long thought that we need to start
sending a better class of people to prison.

And this – IRS style corruption and fraud – is what is around the corner for our healthcare – with the added benefit of our medical records being electronic (hello Bradley Manning/Julian Assange hackers/leakers), the added IRS agents given carte blanche to sniff through everyone’s records, the likes of Kathleen Sebelius making healthcare decisions (with her ‘panel’ of dedicated medical professionals of course) and never forget the 20 million illegal aliens being allowed to access all aspects of healthcare from cradle to grave. . .

Talk about reparations and redistributing wealth. 2012 can’t come fast enough. Of course that Lame Duck Congress is going to be hell – and I wonder what 11th hour crappola Obama will EO through to scr*w We The People even more.

You will see a true-to-form dictatorial obama. His uptake in life has to have been always surrounded by like-minded people. He is now in for a real eye-opener with a congress that will defy his every wish (At least, I’d like to think so) and, given that, he will become even more frayed at the edges and will start having more visible tantrums and will be on TV and the radio even MORE whining and crying and blaming the republicans. I sincerely hope the newly elected congress knows how to deal with a spoiled brat and just ignores him. And when he misbehaves, take the switch to him and shut him up. He’s not king, like he thinks he is and his first trip to the woodshed is imminent.

If princes P. is right about unemployment benefits and food stamps being good for the economy, paying inmates $2600 each in “tax refunds” must be the boon we’ve been waiting for. Oh happy day?

Next up, “Prison Malls” with Sbarro pizza courts, Spencer’s Grifts, Things Dismembered, the whole nine yards. After all, those prisoners will have tons of disposable income.

    What can you say…….crime pays!

    We………are in deeeeeeeeep kimshe.

  5. Mithrandir says:

Chalk up another example of your lazy, not-ever-going-to-get-fired, government workers who are very loose with your money. So you lost a few million…..there’s more where that came from.
