ABC: US Wants To Lose Afghanistan Too

Americans’ Faith in Afghan War Fades

War Fatigue, Frustration Play Into Americans’ Decreasing Interest in War
By EMILY FRIEDMAN

July 18, 2008 — The Pentagon and presidential rivals Barack Obama and John McCain all seem to agree on the need to send more troops to Afghanistan, but they are at odds with much of the country these days on the need to send more Americans into the lawless Afghan mountains.

The latest ABC News/Washington Post poll found that a startling 45 percent of Americans said they do not think the war in Afghanistan is worth fighting, despite the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which provoked the war in the first place.

The growing disenchantment with the Afghan deployment hasn’t reached the level of national frustration with the Iraq war, but after more than six years with U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan and violence on the rise, Americans are becoming increasingly wary about the country’s involvement.

Fifty-one percent of Americans now say that the U.S. military effort in Afghanistan has been unsuccessful, up from 24 percent in fall 2002.

Only 44 percent of Americans consider the war in Afghanistan a success, down from 70 percent in 2002.

The national poll of 1,119 randomly selected adults was conducted by telephone July 10-13, 2008, with a margin of error of three percentage points.

For Sholom Keller, a veteran who served in both Afghanistan and Iraq, it comes as no surprise that support for the war in Afghanistan is fading.

“I’m not shocked at all that American support is waning,” Keller told ABCNews.com. “If we are in Afghanistan because the U.S. was attacked on Sept. 11, then I want to see the perpetrators captured and brought to justice.

“If we’re not finding them in Afghanistan, then I don’t know why we’re there,” he added. “And if they are there I want to know why we haven’t found them in the last seven years if they’ve been giving troops the right intelligence and missions.”

Experts on the Middle East told ABCNews.com that many Americans share Keller’s frustration, blaming several factors, including the fatigue from hearing about not one but two wars, as well as pressing issues at home, such as the failing economy.

Judith Kipper, the director of Middle East programs at the Institute of World Affairs in Washington, D.C., said that the gap in the numbers this year compared with those from 2002 is “tremendous” but still understandable.

“It’s battle fatigue,” Kipper said.

“American don’t want war; they know it’s costing a lot and the worse the economy gets at home, the more people feel a lack of confidence in their daily lives,” Kipper said. “The less confident they feel, the less likely they are to support foreign wars and adventures.”

And while Kipper says Americans haven’t forgotten the 9/11 attacks, the fear and shock that pervaded the country in the days and months following have since faded, just as American’s interest in Afghanistan has.

“This is many years later and life goes on,” Kipper said. “It’s hard for Americans to relate to what happened years ago to their battle fatigue and war weariness now.

“[They care] about the problems that they’re facing on a daily basis,” she added.

The confusing nature of the war in Afghanistan — and the failure to locate Osama bin Laden — has contributed to American’s already disillusioned vision of the war, Kipper said.

“Americans know Iraq is near the oil and they know a lot about Saddam Hussein, but Afghanistan is the end of the earth for most people,” she said. “It’s a very confusing issue; why we’re still there and NATO’s involvement.” …

The Obama campaign said, “Sen. Obama supports this mission, as he does not make decisions based on polls.” …

Gee, this would seem to be from the exact same ABC News/Washington Post poll that “proved” that everybody, no matter how religious or conservative, wants overt and active homosexuals to serve in the military.

Maybe it is explained that the war in Afghanistan makes it easier to have more homosexuals in the military, then everyone will be happy.

Still, aren’t these polls are amazing? Somehow they always prove everything the media wants us to believe is actually true.

It’s like magic.

Similarly, the media always manages to find a “source” to mouth whatever it is they want said.

In this case, “Sholom Keller,” who ABC neglects to mention is a self-described “anarchist rabbi” and such a radical anti-war activist he is a member of the radical Iraq War Veterans Against The War.

But of course ABC News didn’t know that.

Not much.

And lest we forget, the war in Afghanistan was a war that even Michael Moore was all for.

But since the war in Iraq is going so well our media masters must have something do demoralize the public about.

Their Democrat masters demand it.

    HEHEHE !

    classic…

It is as if they don’t even realize the War originally waged, to remove the Taliban from Power and demolish the al Qaeda training camps was WON.

They seem to miss the entire context, that a FREE AFGHANI Democracy was created, and the Afghanis are fighting along side the FREE Nations of NATO, to stop these Radical Extremes, mostly based in Pakistan from killing FREE AFGHANIS.

It is the same misinformation game as we encountered in Iraq, use LEFTIST MOONBATS in a manner as if they speak for a majority, present TERRORIST violence as the ONLY bit of news, and ignore all positive change giving opportunity and potential new FREE LIFE to Millions.

The MSM is a sham, and it is no wonder why some Americans believe that tax cuts are ‘evil’.

But then that is the legacy of Mitchell, Russert, Gregory, Williams, Matthews, etc…

Vivid Partisans who manipulate everything for one Party, which is interested in taking away things from the American People for the common good.

One would think they would wake up someday, and say, “oh my goodness, what was I thinking…”

But if the ugly reality of the dishonest Clintons dodging sniper fire, using fake Southern accents, offering disgusting racist implications, during a Primary couldn’t shake their denial, nothing probably will.

Even Dan Rather, still thinks the fraudulent Maples Documents were somehow legit…

    “It’s battle fatigue . . . and war weariness ,” Kipper said.
Battle fatigue and war weariness? What do we have to be fatigued about here at home? Absolutely nothing has been asked of us as American citizens. No ration cards, victory gardens, collecting materials for bullets, savings bond rallies, etc. If that truly is how the American public feels, then we are a wussy paper tiger. If our brave soldiers can hold out in the heat and cold and interminable re-assignments and deployments, surely we can endure having to HEAR about it–which of course we don’t because the MSM isn’t interested unless we are experiencing multiple deaths. Don’t we want revenge on the trash that took over 3,000 of our own citizens? Aren’t we relieved and thankful that we have had no new terrorist attacks on our soil despite the thugs constant efforts?
