The ACLU's Man From the FBI

The American Civil Liberties Union, often viewed as a bastion of liberalism, has not been reluctant to work with conservatives and libertarians or take up controversial causes. So how odd is it for the ACLU to hire a former FBI agent as a policy counsel?

In the case of Michael German, probably not as strange as one might think.

German is the FBI agent — an undercover specialist who once infiltrated a white supremacist group of skinheads — who resigned in 2004 after charging that the agency retaliated against him for complaining about a botched anti-terrorism investigation. The Justice Department's inspector general later basically substantiated his claim.

"I am convinced that they are on the right side of all the issues that are important now for national security," German said in an interview about joining the ACLU.

He said Bush administration policies allowing warrantless wiretapping and internments without trials, as well as the use of torture in interrogations of terrorism suspects, are ineffective and can worsen national security.

"As an FBI agent, I was sworn to protect the Constitution, and I still am," German said.

Caroline Fredrickson, director of the ACLU's Washington legislative office, said German will be important because he "has real inside knowledge of how the FBI operates" and "what actually works to find a terrorist." His expertise, she said, will "help balance the claims of people who want to limit the right of privacy."

She noted that the ACLU has worked with former House member Robert L. Barr Jr. (R-Ga.) on privacy issues and changes in the USA Patriot Act, as well as with others on the right.

"We are principled, not partisan," she said.

So the (Communist front) ACLU have hired a fired disgruntled FBI man who once infiltrated a bunch of goobers — as their terrorism expert?

Oh, my sides.

The American Civil Liberties Union, often viewed as a bastion of liberalism, has not been reluctant to work with conservatives…

Examples please. (And trying to neuter our intel agencies alongside the crackpot Bob Barr doesn't count.)

For the record  Mr. German’s brilliant career at the FBI had a decided theme. From the (Communist front) ACLU’s website:

Mike German, FBI Whistleblower

… In the early 1990s, he successfully infiltrated a white supremacist group that was plotting to blow up synagogues and a church attended by African Americans. After the Oklahoma City bombing, he again went undercover, joining a militia group that was conspiring to harm federal agents. Both cases led to prosecutions and more importantly, prevented terrorist acts.

His whistleblowing concerned a case that, according to NBC Dateline, "involved a potential nightmare scenario: meetings between a home-grown militia type terrorism organization, and an Islamic terrorist group during which they discussed possible cooperation." German alleges that the FBI fumbled the case and then, after he blew the whistle, falsified records in order to cover its mistakes. German reported his concerns to the chain of command. Despite the fact that he was one of the few agents who successfully prevented terrorist acts before 9/11, the Bureau still retaliated against German…

You can read more of Mr. German’s sob story about being retaliated against by the mean old FBI for being a heroic "whistleblower" at the (Communist front) ACLU’s website.

But here is a brief excerpt:

… I know because I endured two years of retaliation following my complaint about serious mismanagement in a terrorism investigation. The facts regarding the investigation were well documented and supported by incontrovertible evidence, but the FBI ignored the evidence and allowed FBI managers to falsify and backdate records to cover-up the mistakes…

Apparently, all of this perceived "retaliation" was based upon an off the cuff remark an FBI higher-up made when explaining why he didn’t hire German for some cushy training position.

From a 2005 article from the Associated Press:

FBI Bungled Florida Terrorism Investigation, Justice Department Finds

By Mark Sherman
Tuesday, December 6, 2005; Page A12

… Martinez told another FBI official he would not use German in the training programs — despite his previously regular participation in such training — because he lacked confidence in him, the report said. Martinez said that he did not recall saying that, but that if he did, it was a "knee-jerk reaction but did not mean to indicate I was retaliating against him." …

Boo hoo.

It sounds like Mr. German will fit in perfectly with the (Communist front) ACLU. Despite his oft-noted oath to defend the US Constitution.

It’s those danged domestic "militia" types that are the real terrorist threat, doncha know?
