ACLU Must Stay True To Communist Roots

This is an unintentionally hilarious apologia for the ACLU from the opinion page of the Los Angeles Times:

Elizabeth Gurley Flynn was an avowed Communist agitator all of her life. She was a member of the party leadership. Eventually, she was given a state funeral by the Soviet Union and buried with honors in Red Square.

The image “http://www.frostburg.edu/dept/library/images/jpegs%20and%20gifs/meyers-with-elizabeth-gurle.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Here is a typical quote from her:

We believe that the class struggle existing in society is expressed in the economic power of the master on the one side and the growing economic power of the workers on the other side meeting in open battle now and again, but meeting in continual daily conflict over which shall have the larger share of labor’s product and the ultimate ownership of the means of life.

Ms. Flynn was removed from the ACLU at a time when they were trying to keep from being outlawed as a Communist front organization, which of course they were and are to this day.

It is absolutely perfect that Wendy Kaminer would cite her brief exile and subsequent re-glorification by the ACLU as some sign of a momentary lapse on their path of righteousness.

Especially as Ms. Kaminer is writing a book on "ethics."

Elizabeth Flynn wanted the government of the United States overthrown and replaced by a Soviet style system.

Come to think of it, that’s still the message of the ACLU today.
