US Sinks Hopes For G8 ‘Climate’ Deal

From nuclear-powered France and the AFP:

US torpedoes hopes for G8 climate deal

by Simon Morgan and Deborah Cole

HEILIGENDAMM, Germany (AFP) – The United States quashed German hopes Wednesday for a binding pact on slashing carbon emissions at a summit of rich nations, as police fought anti-globalisation demonstrators…

German Chancellor Angela Merkel fought for a face-saving accord on how to counter climate change after the United States refused to allow a mention of targets in the final summit communique.

Merkel had wanted the summit to focus on agreeing mandatory limits on greenhouse gases…

Merkel made a final plea for a G8 accord in a newspaper commentary published as leaders arrived.

“The accelerated climate change is a serious threat. If we don’t stop it, it will lead to massive environmental problems and increased economic burdens,” Merkel wrote in Der Tagesspiegel.

“Therefore we need decisive action from the international community.”

Merkel had wanted G8 leaders to agree to limit the global temperature rise to two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) and to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent compared with 1990 levels by 2050.

Germany’s plan for a binding pact has won qualified support from some nations, but Bush last week unveiled his own proposals and said a long-term goal for reducing greenhouses gases could be set by the end of 2008.

The summit atmosphere had already been soured by tensions between the United States and Russia over a missile defence system that Bush’s administration wants to establish in central Europe…

Thank goodness for objective and unbiased news reporting.

Merkel had wanted G8 leaders to agree to limit the global temperature rise to two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit)…

Why waste time on such penny ante goals?

Why not agree to make the temperature 77 degrees Fahrenheit and 40 percent humidity everywhere in the world for all time?

We clearly have the power.
