All Detroit School Kids Will Get ‘Free’ Meals

From the Detroit Fox News affiliate, WJBK:

Free Meals for all Detroit Schoolchildren in Fall

Tuesday, 16 Aug 2011

DETROIT – All Detroit Public Schools students from kindergarten through 12th grade will get free breakfast, lunch and snacks starting this fall under a federal pilot program, the district announced Tuesday.

Of course, the meaning of the word ‘free’ has changed over the years. Now ‘free’ just means that somebody else is paying for it.

By the way, as we have noted before, this "federal pilot program’ is a payoff to the SEIU, whose ‘food service workers’ staff and administer these cafeterias. These are the same people who now have schools feeding kids dinner and also during the summer months when school is closed.

That amounts to a lot of money for the members of the SEIU. A cut of which will find its way back to the DNC’s coffers, via union dues.

Michigan’s largest public school district said the program’s goal is to "ensure all children receive healthy meals, regardless of income."

Most Detroit schoolchildren also meet income rules for free lunches.

Michigan, Illinois and Kentucky will participate in the U.S. Department of Agriculture pilot program during the upcoming school year. Districts in Michigan can participate if at least 40 percent of their students are entitled to public assistance.

Apparently, this means that any school where 40% or more of the kids get ‘free’ meals, all of the kids will get ‘free’ meals. Isn’t that great? And isn’t it wonderful that money grows on trees?

"One of the primary goals of this program is to eliminate the stigma that students feel when they get a free lunch, as opposed to paying cash," said Mark Schrupp, the district’s chief operating officer. "Some students would skip important meals to avoid being identified as low-income. Now, all students will walk through a lunch line and not have to pay. Low-income students will not be easily identifiable and will be less likely to skip meals."

We believe this might have been the case in some parts of the country, once upon a time. But not now, and not in places like Detroit, where even this article notes that the kids getting free meals are already in the majority.

Besides, if the idea is to prevent the poor from being stigmatized, why do it in areas where those kids make up a near majority or more of the population? They seem to have things exactly backwards.

The district said it still encourages parents to fill out family income surveys because funding for tutoring, after-school programs, extra teachers’ aids, classroom technology and other services are still linked to income.

Of course they do. The district wants to keep the gravy train from the federal, state, county and city going.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Detroit just tell us a few months ago that it was having to shut down several schools in its district due to being out of money?

Also, did anyone else see the report released a few weeks ago that said that the school lunches that parents pack for children are unsafe? That, by the time the children set down to eat the meal, it is too warm, etc., etc.? I found it quite an “interesting” report in the school-lunch-we-want-children-who-look-like-they-belong-in-Aushwitz obsessed political dealings these days.

All this talk about “stigma” sounds so hollow these days. Do we really believe that the parents of these kids feel shame and are sensitive to “stigma”? They don’t pass onto their kids a sense of judgement or shame any more than they do a sense of speaking proper English or character development. These parents pass on the same thing they received from their parents, which always amounts to, “Get everything you can while you can from the man.”

there hasn’t been a “stigma” for at least 12 yrs. almost all schools throughout U.S. use a card similar to a debit card. the parents pay into an account (or in this case not) and the kid just scans the card in the lunch line. no one sees any cash, no none knows who put the $$$ in the account, mom or gubmint. they’ve been doing this for over a dozen years for the same reasons stated here – to avoid stigmatizing the chilluns.
      same old BS

    new style americans

You oppressed them for centuries. Now you have to make it up to them.

    • Howard Roark says:

Oh yeah, I forgot–mainly because I haven’t realized enough luxury and ease from all of my “oppressing”, lol. Still too busy working for a living like all of my forefathers had to do.

Like I said before, democrat politics is nothing more than a vast pay-off system.

All funds must go to their voting blocks, and welfare encourages the reproduction of more dependent voters.

“Raise Taxes!” = “my voting blocks need a cost of living increase. So give me more money so I can keep my job and sprinkle crumbs to the talentless masses that vote for me.”

      Immigration? –undocumented democrats
      Teachers?–democrat voters
      Unions?–democrat voters
      Welfare? –helpless democrat voters
      I.D. check at the polls?–democrat voters can’t vote 2-3x.
Balanced budget?–how can we overspend for our voting base with restrictions?

When you realize democrats 100% priority is to redistribute resources to their voting blocks, and will make any and every excuse to do so, then you will understand every motive behind the democrat party.

Pro, I don’t mean to “steal your thunder”. But, could this be the new Love, American Style?
Somewhere in the background I hear. Oh Lord!, Won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz.
Share the love, spread the wealth, be seduced. The department of happy thoughts has spoken.

Which is why it makes me laugh out loud when some television show has the gall to claim people of low or no income can’t get the support they need to survive from the state. There is always some poor slob complaining about how they have to live out of their car and can’t afford to feed their kids. not one time have i seen the cop say, “Well Tom if you just go over to social services they can get you enrolled for foodstamps and a monthly stipen. I’m sure they can then point you in the right direction to fill out the proper forms to get your free section 8 housing. So Tom put the gun down and let’s get you to the right agency to get you your free stuff so you can take advantage of some working slobs taxes and pretend to provide for your poor kids.”

  6. Right of the People says:

People, people where is your sensitivity????

Don’t you realize if the po’ chillins had to pay for their lunches they couldn’t afford their iPhones and Air Jordans? Not being able to buy those “necessities” of life can lead to low self-esteem. You all obviously are in need sensitivity training.

Don’t worry when you’re in Obummer’s re-education camps you’ll get all you need.

  8. untrainable says:

Detroit should follow Florida’s example. There should be drug testing before any state money is dispensed. Maybe if the kids were off the dope they wouldn’t need breakfast, lunch AND a snack. A SNACK??? Really? It’s no wonder that the kids are obese. They spend the entire school day chowing down to fight off the munchies.

  9. Mithrandir says:

ORDINARILY parents who don’t feed their own kids get picked up (or at least investigated) by social services. I guess those threats are reserved for white people.

George Bush’s “Soft bigotry of low expectations” and we keep getting the same results from Detroit again and again.

The solution is easy, but the pain for those who do the wrong thing should be a significant lesson for further generations:
    1. Don’t value school and education? –no free college, likely no job.
    2. Want to get on welfare? –you must work. Clean roads, sweep streets, empty trash bins….something.
    3. Have more children on welfare?–no extra money.
    4. Want to commit crime? –go to prison where you will clean roads, sweep streets, empty trash bins.

For G*od’s sake, when will the gov’t set an example for these people instead of constantly rewarding them?
