Ann Coulter – On The CBS Morning Show

From ‘The Early Show’ on CBS:

Coulter, Harry Take Each Other On

NEW YORK, Jan. 6, 2009

(CBS) Ann Coulter says liberals should look in the mirror.

In her latest book, "Guilty: Liberal ‘Victims’ and Their Assault on America," the conservative firebrand stirs up controversy again, contending that liberals in America try to play victim when really, they’re the bullies.

While she’s at it, she points fingers at what she calls the liberal media.

"(The book is) basically about how victimhood is rewarded and everyone wants to be a victim," Coulter told CBS News. "It’s about the rewards and praise you get for being a victim and the way liberals use victimhood and they oppress others."

At one point in "Guilty," Coulter remarks about an interview of Sen. Ted Kennedy by Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith in which Smith asks Kennedy if Barack Obama is at increased risk of being assassinated because he’s African American. She dismisses the notion, saying presidential assassinations have been the work of left-wingers or people with no political leanings at all.

Coulter and Smith met face-to-face on The Early Show Tuesday, and didn’t mince words about that issue or anything else.

Among other things, Coulter contended that liberals are at fault for the skyrocketing rate of out-of-wedlock births in the U.S.

Smith said, in one context, Coulter is a whiner, and accused Coulter of doing the very thing she claims liberals do: playing the victim.

The watchdog group Media Matters explored what it asserts are inaccuracies in "Guilty." To see that assessment, click here.

What media bias?

Doesn’t Mr. Smith always attack his guests like this?

Doesn’t CBS always post a link to refutations of the book their guests have written?

(And call a bunch of ultra-left Soros-paid stooges a “watchdog group”?)

Appropriately, on the CBS site, when you click on Coulter’s name you get this pop up from Answer.com:

coul·ter (kōl’tər) pronunciation n. A blade or wheel attached to the beam of a plow that makes vertical cuts in the soil in advance of the plowshare.

Something the odious Mr. Smith found out the hard way.

Still, CBS did have the courage to have her on.

This is such a great video, he just didn’t know what to say, he had to resort to crucifixion as a response. Go Ann.

  2. Colonel1961 says:

Not many can match her intelligence or biting wit – love her.

Harry Smith, via comparison, is an intellectual smurf…

p.s. why is she controversial? (rhetorical)

  3. TickTock says:

As always, the liberal host tries to talk over Ann, insults her, and leans back smugly, waiting for her to make another point he can obsfucate with his inane badgering.

Smith tried to make this “interview” a hit-piece on Ann herself. The reference to crucifixtion was over the top, and it was obviously a calculated statement.

Harry Smith is the poster-boy of the self-castrated white liberal male whose whole persona reeks of maudlin “victimhood”.

    Love you, Ann.

  4. Barbie says:

When confronted with Harry Smith’s dense ignorance, you can see where even the loquacious and quick-witted Ann is stunned into several moments of silence by Smith’s inability to understand the basics of what she’s saying. Smith tries so hard not to look like an idiot, but he just can’t hide it… This will be the last time we see Ann being interviewed by Smith. Smith will have to go back to to interviewing the dullards he’s comfortable with. p.s. LOVE YOU, ANN COULTER. In fact, FOX should get rid of Rivera, and give Coulter her own show.

  5. Enthalpy says:

Although Harry will never find the cure for cancer, he “senses” that Ann wishes to be taken seiously. How perceptive! I’m sure that her guest spot on the show will help her sell books, but on a purely intellectual level, when she came to visit Harry, she was just slumming.

  6. proreason says:

Harry Smith is just like Obamy.

They have learned speaking styles which mimic people who have knowledge and wisdom, when in fact they are facile mouthpieces for liberal doctrine. They have the mentality of an adolescent, and can only repeat dogma as if it were truth.

They are the equivalent of couch-potatoes who have learned the mannerisms of athletes, and therefore claim to be athletes.

If we didn’t live in a Bizarro-world, they would be universally acknowledged as con-men.

  7. semby says:

Anne is not helping the Republican party, it’s all about her! and why does she always that “little black dress”.? Stupid.

    • Liberals Demise says:

The GOP isn’t helping themselves either! She is hi-liting the 2 and sometimes 3 faces of the democraps and how STUPID their forte really is. Dems playing the victim role….that’s rich!! That is as good as them playing the HAVES against the HAVE NOTS!!

    • 1sttofight says:

    • Colonel1961 says:

At least she has the balls to act like a Republican – and how do you know she’s hurting the GOP? Do you think John McCain helped or hurt the GOP? Per usual – rhetorical – he was (is) a self-idolizing idiot.

    • JohnMG says:

I’m shocked!! How lop-sided was this interview. Ann should refuse to have a duel of wits with an unarmed opponent. It’s just not fair.

Obviously, Smith’s mind is as barren as his pate. She just spanked him conclusively.

    • my boy rules says:

If only the republican party was more like Anne..

  8. proreason says:

On a re-listen, it’s striking that the talking head repeatedly accuses Anne of belittling legitimate debate with “sophmoric” humor, yet SHE repeatedly makes serious and thought-provoking points that the tool simply refuses to acknowlege. It’s like she is talking to a wall that is incapable of acknowledging the legitimacy of an opposing view.

And of course, he has to pat her and tell her “to take a breath” when she counters his idiocies with half a dozen rebuttals off the top of her head. It’s his signal to the audience that he is a paternalistic figure indulging a bratty child. Sickening, demeaning, and very sexist. He would never say that to a man.

    • 1sttofight says:

Never waste your time arguing with a liberal.
They are simply not capable of rational conversation.

  9. U NO HOO says:

    “that “little black dress”.?”

    Stunning isn’t it?

  10. curvyred says:

Here is an excellent example of what Ms. Coulter is referring to.

A $240,000 reward simply because you had to cover up your t-shirt with Arabic wording – I guess victimhood does pay!

    • Liberals Demise says:

We just financed terrorism somewhere or worse………a Columbia University education!!

  11. spiffyw says:

I have to say this is such a cool song ….And timely too …
“I’m in Love with Ann Coulter”

  12. patlynnfor says:

Wish some psychologist would take a look at this and tell us why Harry reaches out his hand and hunches forward when he talks with women guests. It’s body language of some kind, and I suspect it reveals some kind of fear that he has when talking with strong and opinionated women.

    • 11ten1775 says:

That bugged me, too. Obama does the same thing. When O’Reilly interviewed him, any time Obama was backed into a corner, he’d lean forward and put his arm out toward O’Reilly. It’s irritating to even watch that, much less have someone do that to you. Ann held her own, though. She leaned right back toward him, but didn’t paw all over him like he did to her. Wouldn’t it be something to see a liberal actually discuss issues with her? They can’t seem to do it. He thought he had a “gotcha” with turning the victim thing on her. No one sees herself as less of a victim than she does, even though she’s been banned by TV shows, slandered many times over, had things thrown at her, been protested at who knows how many college campuses, subjected to incredibly disrespectful interviews by reporters who treat everyone else with kid gloves, and on and on… She did a great job. Can’t wait to read the book.

  13. Lipstick on a PIAPS says:

    Ann Coulter 1,000,000,000
    Liberals 0

Still counting after all of these years. Her Books are going to sell like wildfire during the All Ears Presidency of B.O. ROFLMAO

  14. Perdido says:

One of her better interviews in that she immediately began patronizing Smith. It took him aback and she was toying with roadkill from that point on. Smith would have been much better off and his program would have been much more valuable had he realized she had the upper hand and laid off punching the company line. He was way less than the professional he pretends to.

    Good for her.

  15. Al Morone says:

    Brent Bozell’s take:

Ann Coulter’s new book “Guilty” is out and two things are certain: It will surely be another best-seller, and she will once again drive the Left bonkers. No institution will be more offended than the national press. Prepare to witness their meltdown.

The Drudge Report caused a firestorm when anonymous NBC insiders leaked the word that Coulter had been “banned for life” from that network. CBS featured her on “The Early Show” and a combative Harry Smith tried to insult her to the extreme. He called her “goofy,” “simplistic,” “sophomoric,” and a “whiner.” “You should have a cross,” he said dismissively. “You should put yourself up on a cross.” Why are they so upset?

The so-called “objective” media clearly feel threatened because they are the very liberals Coulter is attacking. If they weren’t liberals, none of her mockery of liberals would bother them. Oh, they might not appreciate her style, as some conservatives don’t. But they wouldn’t have pitched debates inside their walls about how they will savage her in interviews – and I defy the networks to deny this – or how they would remove her from their airwaves altogether.

Those rumored bans have been demanded by the leftist lobbyists for the Censorship Doctrine – people who say they oppose “conservative misinformation,” but clearly want conservatives tossed from the radio and TV airwaves before “misinformation” or just plain conservative thought spills out. They have pressured the networks to stop helping Coulter sell books. Freedom of speech is truly a dangerous concept when conservatives exercise it.

But liberals who claim to oppose “inflammatory rhetoric” on television when it comes from conservatives have no problem with uncivil liberalism. Or 100 percent hate-filled left-wing character assassination. Take NBC, which could not look sillier if it ever seriously banned Coulter for being hyperbolic, when vicious, hyperbolic liberals (Olbermann, Maddow, and Matthews) dominate MSNBC.

It’s easy to run down a list of inflammatory liberals who are welcomed on the TV morning shows. Start with Kitty Kelley’s wild “investigative” books on the Reagans or the Bushes. Or Michael Moore’s kooky conspiracy theories. Or Al Franken suggesting Karl Rove and Scooter Libby should be executed over Plamegate. (NBC’s Matt Lauer and his off-camera crew laughed at that.)

Or recall Bill Maher on his HBO show in 2007 suggesting Arianna Huffington shouldn’t ban commenters on her website wishing Dick Cheney had died in a terrorist attack in Afghanistan. “That’s a funny joke,” Maher said. “If this isn’t China, shouldn’t you be able to say that?” He added that Cheney’s death by suicide bomber might be a public service: “I’m just saying if he did die, other people, more people would live. That’s a fact.”

Harry Smith hosted Maher on CBS just months ago on his faith-mocking movie “Religulous” and didn’t say one discouraging word to him about his caustic remarks about Cheney or his hateful anti-Christian bigotry. Not one word.

But when Ann Coulter speaks, the brass knuckles come out. In 2007, Coulter was heavily criticized for joking that she couldn’t talk about John Edwards, since an ABC actor was forced to apologize for saying “faggot” at the Golden Globes. Liberals were furious. Coulter responded by saying next time, she’d echo Bill Maher and just wish Edwards died in a terrorist attack. Elizabeth Edwards then denounced Coulter for suggesting she wanted her husband dead. Harry Smith invited Mrs. Edwards on CBS, offered her brief softballs and let her verbally whack Coulter with a bat.

Smith is an enormous hypocrite. He completely ignored vicious remarks by Mrs. Edwards just days before, in accepting a “Rage for Justice” award, that the Bush administration was waging a class war that compared to slaughters in Darfur:

“The White House has led the charge against working people, in their own class war. The late, great Molly Ivins once wrote: ‘If there was class warfare, that war was long over. And it was a massacre… a genocide to which there have been words of acknowledgment, as there have in Darfur, but as with Darfur, no meaningful action.’”

But when Ann Coulter comes on the set with Smith, the gloves come off.

Ann Coulter’s liberal-bashing columns and books and television appearances are fun for conservatives, simply because there’s nothing funnier for the right that witnessing CBS putting up on its own screen a Coulter quote about Ted Kennedy and CBS: “Kennedy may be a drunken slob, but unlike CBS News anchors, he is not certifiably insane.”

Call Coulter outrageous, call her a bomb-thrower, even state she goes beyond the pale of civility, if that’s your read. But do not assign that label to Coulter and then present your on-air love and kisses and giggles to all the public leftist hate-spewing that far exceeds any perceived incivility by Coulter. That is utterly transparent liberalism, and utterly transparent hypocrisy.
