Syria to enforce U.N. arms embargo
By Khaled Yacoub Oweis
DAMASCUS (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said on Friday that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had promised to enforce an arms embargo on Hizbollah under a U.N. resolution that halted Israel's war with the Lebanese group.
"The president informed me that Syria supports Security Council Resolution 1701 and will help in its implementation," Annan told reporters after talks with Assad in Damascus.
"While stating Syrian objections to the presence of foreign forces along the Syrian-Lebanese border, the president committed to me that Syria will take all necessary measures to implement in full paragraph 15 of the resolution," Annan added, referring to a provision that bans illegal arms shipments to Lebanon.
Annan said Syria would beef up border security and was ready to run joint patrols with the Lebanese army.
Syrian leaders have been angered by an Israeli demand for international troops to deploy on the Lebanese-Syrian border, the main conduit in the past for Hizbollah weapons supplies.
Lebanon, which has sent 8,600 soldiers to patrol the frontier, says it has no plans to ask U.N. troops to join them.
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem told reporters later that no weapons were crossing from his country to the guerrillas in Lebanon. "No arms are being smuggled to the resistance (Hizbollah) from Syria," he said…
Oh, my sides.

I guess Hugo was feeling a little ignored so he got his fans at the AP to spin this short story and make him feel like a virile dictator again.

What the hell is Hugo bloviating about? Are they going to call the document a “Pots Calling Kettles Black Resolution”?
Oh, the stupidity of it all…

Chavez needs a little Quadifi(sp) treatment. Or maybe a lot.

“Annan said Syria would beef up border security and was ready to run joint patrols with the Lebanese army.” meaning joint patrols with Hezbollah.

You just KNOW if Annan said the Syrians are going to play right then it MUST be true. Sorry, but if Ole Coffee was to tell me that the sky was blue I would have to look up to double check it.

Is there a more worthless, stuffed-shirt, diplomatic dimwit on this Earth than Kofi Annan? How can a man stand in front of a mic every day of his life and say, without laughing, things that he knows no one believes? Syria will be impartial in a conflict between jews and muslim arabs? Of course Kofi.
September 1st, 2006 at 6:11 pm
AmericanIPA,
There is only one more worthless, stuffed shirt, dimwit diplomat on Earth - and Annan appointed him (go figure) - Mark Malloch Brown.
From today - International News Herald - Asia-Pacific sector -
“As Mark Malloch Brown, the deputy secretary general of the United Nations, puts it, “How much less intractable so many issues would be if China was as fully engaged in the management and leadership of the United Nations as so many Western nations are.”
oh THAT’S a great idea - let’s get China more engaged - the same ones that have strong economic ties to dictatorships - the same China that support every tin-pot, self-proclaimed asshat that ever rose to power (Kim Jung-il, anyone?) The same China that just signed a beneficial trade agreement with South America’s new version of Castro? The same China that is actively helping the Syrians and Iranians improve their missle techinology? Yes, Mark “Bollocks” Brown - that’s exactly what we need - China more engaged - what a moron.
From Today - Reuters Alertnet - “LEBANON: International community helps Lebanon recover”
“Aid when there is a blockade, is like putting someone on life support when there is a foot on their wind pipe,” Malloch Brown said. “We need an immediate end to the blockade and a political solution to the underlying causes of the conflict.”
Once again, a less than firm grasp of the obvious from the UN Deputy Secretary General. There is a REASON to blockade Lebanon. Because you asshats wouldn’t let Israel finish the job, Hezbollah is able to re-arm. And since there is intense scrutiny on the Syrian-Lebanese border, the best, fastest way to get that re-armamament to Hezbollah is via the Tyre port. Israel knows this, and thankfully seems less than tractable in stopping the blockade until the full measure of the UN resoltuoin is in place. You cannot have a political solution to a problem, when you just stopped the political solution from occuring - when you stop Israel from defending her political will at the end of a gun, you demolish her ability to come to the table from a position of strength. And you have strenghtened the idea that Hezbollah has a right to a “state within a state” - what a moron.
September 1st, 2006 at 7:41 pm
If Mark “Bollocks” Brown (I like that name Arctain;-) really wanted a political solution why didn’t they use the original Resolution 1435 (?)? Also by “joint patrols”, are they speaking of pot, hashhish, opium, or what? How much money are we blowing on this worthless UN each year anyway?
September 1st, 2006 at 8:21 pm
Stir crazy, I read somewhere that last year, the US contribution was over $13 billion.
I do know that according to the UN charter, the US is required to fund 25% of the UN’s budget. however, try to find an actual budget on the UN website. It appears to be an “impossible dream”.

If there was ANY time to gather a prostest of hundreds of thousands of disgusted Americans…..protesting and demanding the removal of the United Nations from US soil would be the one. They need to be kicked the eff out, and totally ignored. If they try to intervene anywhere we are, they will become the “blue target special” and treated as sympathizers of terror worldwide.
Facilitators of mass murder on a scale unimaginable since the Nazis has been their legacy. Kick them the hell out. Let them go hang out in another part of the world, and solve all those pesky problems from there. Without any finacial help from us. EVER. They are positively the most ineffective band of ne er do wells ever put together for whatever purpose, and a gigantic waste of money. Tell them to leave the country they collectively hate. Bye Bye!! Damn, these vermin are almost as bad as the democratic party, and they dont even pretend to belong to America.
September 1st, 2006 at 8:48 pm
Protest hell, lets get together and throw their randy asses in the hudson. They can swim home.
I really doubt the NYPD would lift a hand to stop us, they would more than likely help.
September 1st, 2006 at 8:55 pm
That’s what I mean 1st…..not be diplomatic about it….chase those leeches out of their buildings, and issue an edict that if they are seen after 24 hours…..they must forfiet everything they own to whoever finds them. Then, put a 50k bounty on all employees and work up from there.
Give them time to leave. A day should do it. Tell them they can all come back if the world is conflict free for a decade because of their efforts. No wars. No deaths. Then, they can come back and start all over again. But…they must pay the United States rent! 100 million euros a day, payable in advance, and they must return to their host country every evening. There. I dislike them immensely.
September 1st, 2006 at 8:56 pm
Since we now have the word of Kofi Annan and the Syrians that they are going to keep arms to Hezbollah from flowing through their country….
This just in…
Annan announced that Al-Qaeda will not longer be attempting to attack America… they have decided to begin diverting money away from blowing up innocent men, women and children towards opening McDonald’s restaurants in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Algeria. When asked, Osama bin Laden responded… “Hey, we still believe America to be the great Satan, but wow, they do make good fries! And that Whitney Houston….Wow!”
Annan also announced that Iran has decided to forgo nuclear ambitions. Instead, they will take part in a joint, retro-80’s “Feed the World” campaign. In the words of Iranian president Ahmadinejad, “We LOVED Bananarama! And that George Michael fellow was just dreamy… I even modelled my beard after his! Oh, and kill all the Jews.” Annan smiled at this, stating “We welcome Iran into the fold of civilized nations. It’s one thing to want to kill all the Jews, it’s a totally other and unacceptable thing to decry 80’s music while building nuclear weapons.”
Deputy UN Secretary Mark “Bollocks” Brown announced today that Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro decided that their anger towards the US has been misplaced. After meeting with Cindy Sheehan, they decided to “all just get along”. Noticing that Cindy Sheehan had just as bad of body odor as they did, they came to the conclusion that if American’s could stand to have Code Pink roaming around without bathing, American’s were a lot more tolerant than they initially thought. Mark “Bollocks” Brown declined to comment, stating that he had a imminent engagement in Red Square. This reporter was unsure if he meant China or Hell.
North Korea announced today, considering the goodwill that seemed to be breaking out on Kofi Annan’s announcement regarding Syria, that they have decided to turn the North Korean governmental buildings into Insane Asylums. They stated that there was ample evidence that the buildings were already being used as such, so the impact to the nation would be little felt. They also stated that the governmental officals would remain and be reclassified as ‘inmates’. They expect to release some back into the general population - though the new government spokeswoman worried that the only jobs available to the former government agents upon release will probably be as ’side-show freaks’. The North Korean spokeswoman also asked “… for the United States to please send as many election officials as they can spare…” for the upcoming democratic election in North Korea. She also reiterated that US Democrats would not be allowed to supervise North Korean Elections as, in her words, “… they wouldn’t know a hanging chad from their own d***.”
Lastly, there is pork in the treetops, and the devil is ice-skating!

LOL,
sheehanjihad - Tell ol’ Bashiee I said “hello”. It’s been a while since he and I spoke (since my last eye exam). Hopefully, he’s enjoying all the press Kofi “what’s in it for me” Annan is generating. I bet it’s going to be rough to pad the UN hand since all those arms shipments are coming to an abrupt halt. Tell him he has my sympathies.

I’m with y’all on throwing the bums out. Now would be a terrific time since the inspector has condemned the upper levels of the UN building and told them that they have to get going on the repair and remodel. What the heck are they doing with the $13 billion anyway other than padding each other’s Swiss bank accounts.

Annan puts Syria in charge of disarming Hezbollah…
Now Kofi Annan has put the fox in charge of the hen house by believing Syria’s Bashar Assad’s promise to halt all weapons to Hezbollah and to guard the border with Syrian soldiers. Oh, excuse me, that’s the Lebanese resistance,…

Just got off the phone with Bashir….he thanked the United States for not threatening his country, and recognizing Iran as the “go to” country in the middle east. I reminded him the elections were still a couple of months off, but he insisted that the female named Pelosi gave him reason to be assured of no action taken now, or for the next six years.
September 3rd, 2006 at 12:01 pm
And they say no one does great comedy anymore. If everyone actually were as stupid as Kofi and his cronies believe, there would be no war. There would be no time, what with looking for drool cups, snipe and 5 leaf clovers.
September 3rd, 2006 at 12:27 pm
When we throw the freaking asshats at the U.N. out, think of all the parking spaces that will be freed up in NYC. The parking spaces taken by U.N. dipshitplomats where tickets are issued and never paid. That’s reason enough to throw their collective asses out.

here’s an excellent exampll of syria enforcing the arms embargo!
Syria-bound ship impounded in Limassol
http://www.cyprusweekly.com.cy.....geID=304_3
Cypriot authorities said yesterday they were offloading 21 mobile radar off a Syria-bound vessel impounded at Limassol on suspicion of smuggling arms.
The cargo ship has been held at Limassol since Tuesday
After authorities were tipped off that the Panamanian-flagged vessel was carrying an illicit stash of sophisticated weapon systems.
“The 21 trucks include what appear to be three command vehicles, while the other 18 are equipped with mobile radar units,” said a police statement.
“It appears the radar systems are old technology upgraded with electronic computers which are possibly tracking and surveillance radar,” it added.
The ship’s bill of lading says its carrying meteorological equipment.
But Interpol informed Cyprus the Gregorio 1 maybe involved in arms smuggling and was loaded with the shipment in China and North Korea.
Police said examinations of the items have yet to “safely conclude” what the systems are used for.
“Two vehicles have been offloaded for more extensive checks and the rest will follow during the day,” said police.
Moreover, some 2,356 metal pipes of various diameters were also found but have not been closely inspected as they are beneath the vehicles.
“From the investigation so far it appears the shipment was being transported to Syria and the Syrian government is claiming the cargo as say it’s meteorological equipment,” said police.
There is media speculation that the pipes could be the casings of a weapons system.
And the authorities have not ruled out the find could be part of an illegal air defence system.
“Something has been found which can be used for meteorological purposes but it can also have a military use and we are checking this out, ” a source close to the enquiry told AFP on Wednesday.
The ship anchored off Limassol on Tuesday asking for permission to refuel and re-supply after leaving Egypt’s Port Said for Latakia in Syria and was immediately boarded by a special Cyprus police unit and explosives experts armed with a search warrant.
Police said the documentation did not match the description of the goods on the ship and the 15-man crew are being questioned about the suspect cargo.
The majority of the crew are Ukrainian apart from a single Russian.
