AP: Economy Causing Topless Dancers

Never mind the bad news from the AFP, here is the latest on the recession’s purported impact on the illicit sex front, from a tear-soaked Associated Press:

More women needing cash go from jobless to topless

CHICAGO – As a bartender and trainer at a national restaurant chain, Rebecca Brown earned a couple thousand dollars in a really good week. Now, as a dancer at Chicago’s Pink Monkey gentleman’s club, she makes almost that much in one good night.

The tough job market is prompting a growing number of women across the country to dance in strip clubs, appear in adult movies or pose for magazines like Hustler.

Employers across the adult entertainment industry say they’re seeing an influx of applications from women who, like Brown, are attracted by the promise of flexible schedules and fast cash. Many have college degrees and held white-collar jobs until the economy soured.

"You’re seeing a lot more beautiful women who are eligible to do so many other things," said Gus Poulos, general manager of New York City’s Sin City gentleman’s club. He said he got 85 responses in just one day to a recent job posting on Craigslist…

In this economy, "desperate measures are becoming far more acceptable," said Jonathan Alpert, a New York City-based psychotherapist who’s had clients who worked in adult entertainment…

Dancers at the upscale Rick’s Caberet [sic] clubs in New York City and Miami can make $100,000 to $300,000 a year — in cash — even with the economic downturn, club spokesman Allan Priaulx said.

Priaulx said 20 to 30 women a week are applying for jobs at the New York club, double the number of a year ago.

Rhode Island’s Foxy Lady held a job fair Saturday, seeking to fill about 35 positions for dancers, masseuses, bartenders and bouncers. The Providence Journal reported that more than 150 job seekers showed up to apply for work at the strip club. Foxy Lady co-owner Tom Tsoumas said a recent promotion to cut prices helped the club regain business lost due to the bad economy, forcing it to hire more employees.

Still, analysts say, the industry isn’t immune to the economic recession. Business is down an estimated 30 percent across all segments, including adult films, gentleman’s clubs, magazines and novelty shops, said Paul Fishbein, president of AVN Media Network, an adult entertainment company that has a widely distributed trade publication and an award show…

Vivid Entertainment’s Hirsch said the number of women in his business has doubled in the last couple years, with roughly 800 working as adult actresses. "It is more competitive than I’ve seen it in 25 years," he said…

Brown, meanwhile, has a ready answer for those critical of her career choice.

"I have job security," she said.

And we thought it was due to ‘global warming.’

But really, is there nothing that the AP will not ascribe to either the economy or climate change?

It only depends on which axe they are grinding.

Speaking of which, at one of the very same clubs mentioned, some young ladies are going topless for other reasons:

The girls of Rick’s Cabaret Gentleman’s Club unveil their ‘We’d Rather Go Topless Than Wear Fur’ advertisement in support of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, in New York.

Maybe it’s just that time of year.

(Note: the photo at the top was taken on a subway in Bucharest where a young lady is performing ad hoc pole dances on the city’s underground railway system for donations. Clearly we really are in a world-wide recession.)

And to think people snickered when they thought the “breakaway” groups could not come up with any good ideas!!!!!!

I understand that 20% of the cash GDP in Cuba ‘comes’ from the same sort of work.

Perhaps these “businesses” or women could have made more money had the AIG bonus recipiants been able to keep their bonus with out penalty.

Good thing Obama is rolling out the White House Council on Women and Girls. Somebody has to stop all that oppression.

(Just kidding. I wish I were oppressed.)

She just proved how damn stupid she is – she gets old, fat and/or if she ‘refuses’ a client- see how long that ‘job security’ lasts .

I can’t decide if Mr. Priaulx (or Rick’s) is in need of new girls or just blowing their own horn (i.e. in need of customers) – besides who cares since probably 90% of the girls blow that on drugs.

Where are the feminazis to scream about this enslavement of and degradation of women? They are deathly silent because another supporter of abortion uber alles is in the WH, so they know their beloved Roe v Wade isn’t going to be overturned for another 4 years. . .And that’s all that matters.

So is the AP implying that if it weren’t for the economy, these women would all be physicists for NASA?

Well, there are 17 open positions in Treasury that The Moron has been too busy to fill (what with updating his NCAA brackets, picking out a dog, and running up his frequent flyer miles).

Since he clearly believes all citizens are equal, given that they should all receive equal benefits, why doesn’t he appoint some unemployed dancers to the the Treasury positions?

Since they have actual real-world experience, they would be a BIG improvement over what we have in that department today.

Maybe not physicists, but Monica Lewinsky was in government or was it the other way around?

Women moving to the sex-trade is a dying canary in the mine. It may seem funny to some, but it’s a terrible trend that portends catastrophe for a society. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and if this new trend doesn’t scream out that truth, nothing does. It’s a sad life for those contemplating such action. But where’s the outrage? Where’s the warning?

Eventually, as our economy worsens and when fewer cabaret customers can afford to gawk and grab, many of the ‘ladies’ married to the materialism of better times, will be forced to take the next logical step. Some will be able to return to some sense of normalcy, but many will quickly fall into a scary and lonely place.

It will pay well through the short years of their physical prime, but the price will quickly decline in direct proportion to their declining bodies. As they once laughed at the customers that couldn’t afford them, they will scorn the ridicule, but accept what they can get, from the same. That’s when they’ll realize it was a fool’s paradise and they’ve wasted the blessing of their beauty on men they will learn to hate.

If they were smart enough to save their money instead of ‘invest’ it in short-term mind-numbing pharmaceuticals, they may be able to stop when it gets really bad. Unfortunately, the allure of momentary escape from the conscience is too great and their lives become less and less valuable.

Lives wasted and lost for the idea of ‘easy’ money that is anything but easy when it’s all said and done. A society that loses it’s women loses it’s way.

We’ve always had those that chose that path but it has never been considered a good thing or been thought a rational path. The fact that the story doesn’t mention any of the pitfalls seems telling of the depths of our decline.

Lots of opportunity for wit here, but seriously…
Do you actually believe for one moment that white collar professional women, concientious mothers and college honor students are flocking to the strip clubs for work? It’s more likely more of the continous media attempts to legitimize the sex trade as some sort of “normal” or “acceptable” activity. The reality of that business is very far from the media narratives about the “stripper with a heart of gold,” or the all too familiar, “loving single mother, pole dancing her way out of poverty.”
I drove cab for a while in larger Mid-Atlantic city and took a lot of calls from “gentleman’s” clubs. Almost without exception, the girls involved in that “work” are physically abused, drug or alcohol addicted or psychologically damaged from previous abuse. Almost all were under the control of a man (sometimes a butch woman) to whom they paid a substantial part of their take. (This person is usually reffered to as a “bodyguard.” More accurate, if indelicate, is the term “pimp.”) I’ve seen these girls take beatings from these “caretakers” for withholding some of their tips. The amount of money to be made is inflated as well, as the only girls who make the really big money are the ones that “trick” as well as dance.
So these kinds of stories should cause you to think: How many upright, together women do you know that would involve themselves in this kind of business? Likely not many. So why then the constant media push to “normalize” the sex trades? And why do the reporters repeatedly ignore the well documented truths about this lifestyle in favor of the “independent, savvy woman usin’ what she got to make her way in this cruel world” narrative?
