AP ‘Fact Checks’ Obama Oil Spill Speech

From a selectively ‘factual’ Associated Press:

FACT CHECK: Obama left blanks in oil spill speech

By Calvin Woodward, Associated Press Writer Wed Jun 16, 2010

WASHINGTON – In assuring Americans that BP won’t control the compensation fund for Gulf oil spill recovery, President Barack Obama failed to mention that the government won’t control it, either.

That means it’s anyone’s guess whether the government can, in fact, make BP pay all costs related to the spill.

Never mind that there is no legal basis whatsoever for Mr. Obama’s draconian action. We are supposed to be a nation of laws, not of men – or even Messiahs.

Maybe Mr. Obama should order that BP cannot declare bankruptcy, even though the company has already lost more than half of its value.

Obama aimed high in his prime-time Oval Office address Tuesday night — perhaps higher than the facts support and history teaches — as he vowed to restore livelihoods and nature from the still-unfolding calamity in the Gulf of Mexico.

Mere child’s play for a man who promised to make the sea levels recede.

A look at some of his statements and how they compare with those facts:

OBAMA: "We will make BP pay for the damage their company has caused and we will do whatever’s necessary to help the Gulf Coast and its people recover from this tragedy. … Tomorrow, I will meet with the chairman of BP and inform him that he is to set aside whatever resources are required to compensate the workers and business owners who have been harmed as a result of his company’s recklessness. And this fund will not be controlled by BP. In order to ensure that all legitimate claims are paid out in a fair and timely manner, the account must and will be administered by an independent, third party."

THE FACTS: An independent arbiter is no more bound to the government’s wishes than an oil company’s. In that sense, there is no certainty BP will be forced to make the Gulf economy whole again or that taxpayers are off the hook for the myriad costs associated with the spill or cleanup. The government can certainly press for that, using legislative and legal tools. But there are no guarantees and the past is not reassuring…

Note that it doesn’t even occur to the AP reporter to question the legality of this. Instead, the AP chides Mr. Obama for possibly not going far enough.

Perhaps we should take the children of some of the BP executives hostage until the damages are fully paid to everyone’s satisfaction.

OBAMA: "In the coming days and weeks, these efforts should capture up to 90 percent of the oil leaking out of the well."

THE FACTS: BP and the administration contend that if all goes as planned, they should be able to contain nearly 90 percent of the worst-case oil flow. But that’s a big "if." So far, little has gone as planned in the various remedies attempted to shut off or contain the flow. Possibly as much as 60,000 barrels a day is escaping. BP would need to nearly triple its recovery rate to reach the target.

Again, what a peculiar thing for the AP to nitpick, especially when there were so many other obviously whoppers enunciated by Mr. Obama in his speech.

OBAMA: Temporary measures will capture leaking oil "until the company finishes drilling a relief well later in the summer that is expected to stop the leak completely."

THE FACTS: That’s the hope, but experts say the relief well runs the same risks that caused the original well to blow out. It potentially could create a worse spill if engineers were to accidentally damage the existing well or tear a hole in the undersea oil reservoir.

Well, the AP can hope, can’t they?

OBAMA: "From the very beginning of this crisis, the federal government has been in charge of the largest environmental cleanup effort in our nation’s history."

THE FACTS: Early on, the government established a command center and put Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen in charge of coordinating the overall spill response. But officials also repeatedly have emphasized that BP was "responsible" and they have relied heavily on BP in making decisions from hiring cleanup workers to what oil dispersing chemicals to use. Local officials in the Gulf region have complained that often they don’t know who’s in charge — the government or BP.

Is the AP mad that BP was running the technical side of dealing with the problem, rather than the Coast Guard or the White House?

OBAMA: "We have approved the construction of new barrier islands in Louisiana to try and stop the oil before it reaches the shore."

THE FACTS: Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and local officials pleaded for weeks with the Army Corps of Engineers and the spill response command for permission to build about 40 miles of sand berms along the barrier islands.

State officials applied for an emergency permit to build the berms May 11, but as days went by Jindal became increasingly angry at federal inaction. The White House finally agreed to a portion of the berm plan on June 2. BP then agreed to pay for the project…

The AP seems to be blissfully unaware that Governor Jindal is going ahead with his berms plan without the full permission of the White House.

OBAMA: "Already, I have issued a six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling. I know this creates difficulty for the people who work on these rigs, but for the sake of their safety and for the sake of the entire region, we need to know the facts before we allow deepwater drilling to continue."

THE FACTS: Obama issued a six-month moratorium on new permits for deepwater drilling but production continues from existing deepwater wells.

Apparently, the AP is angry that some oil production might continue in this country. And we can’t have that.

It isn’t enough that Mr. Obama’s ‘moratorium’ will destroy at least 40,000 jobs in the Gulf and send the valuable equipment and expertise elsewhere – probably for years.

Oh, and never mind that such a moratorium will accomplish exactly nothing, except further crippling our nation’s ability to supply its own energy needs.

Still, this is what passes for hard-hitting ‘fact checking’ in the minds of the Associated Press.

Obama: ” Last year, the House of Representatives acted on these principles by passing a strong and comprehensive energy and climate bill – a bill that finally makes clean energy the profitable kind of energy for America’s businesses.”

The FACTS: Never in the history of the world has a government been able to legislate profitability. In an open and free market system, the only economic model that produces real gains in wealth, profitability is determined by quality and usefulness of the good/service, supply and demand, and to a lesser extent want (i.e. for luxury items such as jewelry) and not by royal decree.

This statement is one of the most revealing statements about the political ideology of Barak Obama. It shows he has no knowledge what so ever of how an economy works, and for that matter a government. It also shows he is a hopeless ideolog completely blinded by his academic understanding of socialism and a command economy and is criminally negligent and clinically delusional about their catastrophic and numerous failures throughout history. He believes in one thing: superiority of government above all else, a Marxist government lead by him and people like him.

  2. Rusty Shackleford says:

Well, for me, this just makes me something of an anarchist. I have no faith in the government whatsoever. This attitude and action(s) have pushed me, philosophically, over the edge. I was of no mind to hear it and now I’m certain that we have a little dictator in the making.

He doesn’t like our republic way of doing things and seeks to undermine and destroy, not only our way of doing business (capitalism) but also our way of law. His intent is clear here and the most thinly veiled yet attempt at usurping US LAW.

With even the most casual comparison, it is of dictatorial nature and intent.

Much like a child bully saying “I’ll show you!”

Can we be very far away from martial law?

    • proreason says:

He may be deliberately enraging the red-state Gulf Coast in order to cause enough incidents to say that the only solution is martial law.

If I wanted to do that I would:
      – do nothing to head off the mess
      – shut down the an industry to throw thousands of people out of work
      – fly in every couple of weeks to get them really pissed at me
      – take a lot of vacations and play a lot of golf to highlight my disdain for the problem
      – send lawyers down to sue that only entity that can fix the problem
      – slap some giant taxes on everybody
      – pretend that fantasy industries will replace the industry I shut down
      – take some actions to drive the price of gasoline over $5 a gallon in the coming months
      – brag about what a great job I was doing

That would probably be enough to send otherwise rational people over the edge and gin up some violence that I would then have to impose marshall law to control.

    • Chinnubie says:

I hope that this can get some real support to take off. I would relish a conflict of this nature imagine what this moron-president would have to do then; shoot Americans on American soil, this could spark off a civil war and in reality this only hurts all of us but, sometimes things can’t be quelled with diplomatic talk and once in a while a fight breaks out.

    • Rusty Shackleford says:

Last night when I read the WSJ online, I ran across this: http://online.wsj.com/community/groups/question-day-229/topics/how-would-you-grade-president-obamas-speech-oil

Seems the oval office speech is another unmitigated disaster to mirror the one in the Gulf Of Mexico.

As regards this regime, words seldom fail me but they do today. Two and a half more years of this ass-clown and the rest of my life trying to recover from it. The damages are horrendous.

  3. Chinnubie says:

Is this any real surprise, to use this accident to further his destruction of this country? What blows me away are the media morons that continue to carry his water all the while having their head in the sand. I mean the media are losing viewership, the newspapers are losing subscribers, and they just can’t understand why people don’t want what their selling.

If the media were doing their job properly this child-president wouldn’t be able to get any of his agenda moved forward because, like Clinton he’d have to stay in the center and drop the radical crap.

This proves to me that he doesn’t want to win a second term and he is going to do everything he can to cause as much damage to this country before he is fired. Clearly the majority of this country do not want any of this radical agenda but they aren’t being informed to the damaging affects so half of the population continue to support this moron, thinking he’s doing a great job.

    • proreason says:

“media morons that continue to carry his water all the while having their head in the sand”

they are true believers. Deeply, deeply brainwashed.

“like Clinton he’d have to stay in the center and drop the radical crap”

it won’t happen. This is his life’s work. Clinton just wanted to be president and get laid. Obamy is a bone-deep marxist dedicated to destroying this country.

“he doesn’t want to win a second term and he is going to do everything he can to cause as much damage to this country before he is fired.”

Oh he wants a second term alright…a permanent second term. That’s the ultimate goal. And he probably believes it will happen. The smarter heads around him will settle for maximum damage in 4 years, which they now know is highly likely to happen.

  4. Right2thepoint says:

    http://www.americanthinker.com/2010/06/the_presidents_oil_reserves_li.html

According to a June 2008 article in Kiplinger Magazine, the United States has enough oil reserves to power the nation for upwards of three centuries. That’s three-hundred years, Mr. President. We are not running out of oil reserves, it’s just that those oil reserves have been declared off limits due to decades of environmental lobbying of our politicians, especially those on the Left. This lobbying has driven the likes of BP and others out deep into the Gulf of Mexico to extract the nation’s needed oil.

Note the following statement from the article:

“…untapped reserves are estimated at about 2.3 trillion barrels, nearly three times more than the reserves held by Organization of Petroleum Exporting Counties (OPEC) and sufficient to meet 300 years of demand-at today’s levels-for auto, aircraft, heating and industrial fuel, without importing a single barrel of oil.”

Further note that the 90 deep water rigs associated with the 6 month ban rent for day rates over 400k per day. Don’t expect them to sit idle.

The most logical place for them to head, and industry sources say the moves will happen, is to Brazil where they could use every deep water rig they can get their hands on. If they move it will be for at least 2 years minimum.

Also note Soros bought into Petrobras just before the US via the IMF loaned the 2 billion to work their drilling.

So if the rigs move Soros will get a windfall………………AGAIN

  5. Widget Maker says:

I have never heard of any case in law where a corporation is ordered to put money into a fund and have someone else administer it. The President is acting way beyond his authority.

I doubt the allegations that BP was reckless. One does not successfully drill a 30000 foot hole starting at the bottom of the sea by being reckless. Accidents do happen. As pointed out by one of the oil executives there is always a risk.

I bought into BP a week ago. There is a risk that the company will go bankrupt but I feel the company has deep enough pockets to find a solution to the engineering problem and to pay for damages to other business in the area. Eventually it will recover unless the political interference makes it impossible.

The company is getting a lot of politicial interferance from a reckless US President who seems to have a political agenda to strip BP of its assets. The President is making lots of noise but there is not much substance in what he is saying. Ineffective railing from a President, who has no clue, will not provide a solution.

  6. U NO HOO says:

I told BP to stone wall it. “Prove that it is my oil that did the damage. See you in court.”

But they didn’t want to be called racist so they kow towed to the appointed annointed one. BP deserves what happens to it. And the shareholders deserve to miss the dividends if they give the money away to Feinberg, who will want to see your papers, I mean union card.

  7. Mithrandir says:

Thank God I missed his “Jimmy Carter Moment” but I assume it is the typical cliche filled lie-fest that we have all come to expect.
I can hear it now: “At the end of the day….” “Make no mistake, BP will . . . . ” “The previous administration….”

The Milquetoast PresidencyThis is what lawyers do, they run to a microphone and wear you out with their endless talking.

People tune in, because they want to hear good words, and reassuring comments, and that is exactly what they get. There are no fixes, or solutions, and NONE (I assume) that lifts people’s spirit as resolute and steadfast Americans who won’t be brought down by crisis, and that today’s failure is tomorrow’s success!

    • Rusty Shackleford says:

Mith, you’ve perhaps stumbled on the phenomenon that is wrecking our land.

It’s tough for a president to provide an address when things aren’t going very well and to point out the obvious in a way that makes people think. That is, think in ways that are considered “negative” and “unproductive”.

I’m not talking about scolding and pointing fingers, like barry is so good at. That kind of attitude and action is simply an immature accuser-in-chief method. No, I’m talking about discussing the obvious consequences of feeding a nation the oil it needs and the possibility that something can go wrong from time-to-time but how to mitigate the ensuing problem and discussing positive results by DOING THE WORK necessary.

Obama has avoided work his whole life. I doubt he has ever gotten his hands dirty or even washed a dish in his own house. Work is a four-letter word to him and he has therefore never understood that sometimes, in order to clean up a mess, you have to get your hands dirty.

This all fits within the dysfunctional mental-state in which he lives.

Plus, his delays and absolute ignoring the possible solutions to an impending problem, like oil coming ashore and what to do about it, completely fit with his plans of an obvious meltdown of our pristine beaches on the gulf shores. He is intentionally sacrificing that in order to use it to meet his agenda and THIS TIME, unlike the subversive actions that resulted in using gobs of taxpayer dough to “head off a crisis”, the people are awaking from their years-long slumber to note that “hey, TARP was CRAP…and unemployment is STILL high…in fact it’s ridiculously high”

So what’s all this about the oil spill? You mean he had offers from other countries to head it off at the pass and he went on vacation instead…and decided to ignore them and go play ‘ball?

He really is a POS. Not POTUS….. but P-O-S. How can he sit there and claim to be “for the everyman” when everything he’s doing is just costing more money? Now this. His actions(and inactions) have taken a problem and turned it into a nightmare. I see it clearly now. I wouldn’t let this guy cut my grass.

And so it goes. The US is slow to awaken to the obvious while it flits and floats from this episode of LA Law to American Idol. However, it does wake up. We did get rid of Carter..and we’ll get rid of this clown too. Unfortunately, he has done grave damage to this nation. Biden’s attitude is just a hint of the underlying evil that lives there. Another hint was this dipshit who accosted a college student who simply asked a question of the proletariat. It would not have been out of place in Soviet-Russia. “Comrade congressman, I am but mere college student asking question. Please to not hurt me or send me to gulag, comrade congressman”.

We stand on the precipice of hell.

I believe that the current form of government we have is counting on not having the obvious example of communist Russia as an example to work in their favor.

  8. Reality Bytes says:

Ever notice the President doesn’t seem to fill out his suit. It looks a few sizes to big for him & by the way he’s been handling his constitutional duties, so does his job.

    • proreason says:

I noticed that too, in the few seconds of his latest lecture that I could stomach.

But his regime is all about image, and nothing else…..so it must be deliberate.

I think they have brought in a team of psychiatrists who have told them that if the Moron begins to look smaller or haggard, people will think crisis after crisis plus the big bad wingnuts are beating him up so badly that he is starting to lose weight…and will then feel sorry for him.

My guess is that they have had thousands of people thinking about his collar size, his haircut, what tv shows he should talk about, what teams he should root for, whether he should cough of not, when to tear up, etc., rather than thinking about how to clean up the oil spill.

      In between beer bongs.
