AP Factchecks Palin With Rogue Facts

From a fact challenged Associated Press:

FACT CHECK: Palin’s book goes rogue on some facts

By Calvin Woodward, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – Sarah Palin’s new book reprises familiar claims from the 2008 presidential campaign that haven’t become any truer over time.

Ignoring substantial parts of her record if not the facts, she depicts herself as a frugal traveler on the taxpayer’s dime, a reformer without ties to powerful interests and a politician roguishly indifferent to high ambition.

Palin goes adrift, at times, on more contemporary issues, too. She criticizes President Barack Obama for pushing through a bailout package that actually was achieved by his Republican predecessor George W. Bush — a package she seemed to support at the time.

A look at some of her statements in "Going Rogue," obtained by The Associated Press in advance of its release Tuesday…

PALIN: Rails against taxpayer-financed bailouts, which she attributes to Obama. She recounts telling daughter Bristol that to succeed in business, "you’ll have to be brave enough to fail."

THE FACTS: Palin is blurring the lines between Obama’s stimulus plan — a $787 billion package of tax cuts, state aid, social programs and government contracts — and the federal bailout that Republican presidential candidate John McCain voted for and President George W. Bush signed…

PALIN: Says Ronald Reagan faced an even worse recession than the one that appears to be ending now, and "showed us how to get out of one. If you want real job growth, cut capital gains taxes and slay the death tax once and for all."

THE FACTS: The estate tax, which some call the death tax, was not repealed under Reagan and capital gains taxes are lower now than when Reagan was president.

Economists overwhelmingly say the current recession is far worse. The recession Reagan faced lasted for 16 months; this one is in its 23rd month. The recession of the early 1980s did not have a financial meltdown. Unemployment peaked at 10.8 percent, worse than the October 2009 high of 10.2 percent, but the jobless rate is still expected to climb…

We could not bring ourselves to post the full list of particulars. But these are all too representative.

THE FACTS: Palin is blurring the lines between Obama’s stimulus plan — a $787 billion package of tax cuts, state aid, social programs and government contracts — and the federal bailout that Republican presidential candidate John McCain voted for and President George W. Bush signed.

A) Mr. Bush added sums to the TARP bailout at the specific request of Mr. Obama. Mr. Bush also included bailing out GM and Chrysler at the specific request of Mr. Obama and the Democrats. And, of course, Mr. Obama voted for all the bailouts.

B) Mr. Obama’s stimulus plan includes no real tax cuts. And yet the AP lists that item first.

THE FACTS: … Economists overwhelmingly say the current recession is far worse. The recession Reagan faced lasted for 16 months; this one is in its 23rd month.

This is simply a lie that the AP has been repeating to try to place the recession at the feet of President Bush.

As we have often noted, a recession is two consecutive quarters with a negative gross domestic product. And no amount of repetition will change that definition.

But how typical it is of our watchdog media to ‘factcheck’ with blatant lies.

[Also from the Associated Press: On, the left:] This book cover released by OR Books shows ‘Going Rouge-Sarah Palin An American Nightmare’. [On the right:] This illustration released by TBTM Media shows the cover of ‘Going Rouge: The Sarah Palin Rogue Coloring & Activity Book,’ written by Michael Stinson and Julie Sigwart, with illustrations by Sigwart.

But just look at the ‘book covers’ that the Associated Press considers newsworthy if you have any doubt about how much they fear Ms. Palin.

Apparently, no AP journalists were alive during the Carter years.

Most people would say that inflation over 10% is worse than inflation of 0%, and that mortgage rates of 14% are worse than mortgage rates of 5 to 6%…..just for starters.

But hey, just the term AP Factchecker takes Orwell to an entirely new level of imagination.

  2. TLK says:

Fail to see the misuse of facts on the part of Governor Palin.

She calls the “stimulus plan” exactly what it is: a taxpayer-financed BAILOUT…For failed, indebted state governments like California and New York and other “Obama blue” states, irresponsible homeowners, ACORN thugs, deadbeat welfare recipients, and other members of the Democrats’ loser constituencies… all to ensure massive votes for the Dems in 2010.

Of course this recession is worse than previous recessions in the past 35 years…but only because Obambi is making it worse by his policies, which will ensure a perpetual economic decline for YEARS and YEARS to come.

  3. U NO HOO says:

    Sarah Palin, a nightmare?

    Joe Biden, a moron!

  4. Rip Cord says:

I remember this fear from the media and the leftists about Ronald Reagan back in the day. Ya know something, Be Afraid Democrats, BE VERY AFRAID!

  5. canary says:

While Bush & McCain courted for the votes, Bush, ordered federal help on the borders, and despite McCain’s and other Senators trying to get Obama to enforce it, he hasn’t.

When Obama notices decapitating, and drug smuggling, anthrax threats, tunnels leading to San Diego, Ft. Hood, well…where is the transforming, flexible, changing Obama when it comes to securing the borders?

Mention Obama’s lying and changing his mind twice in a day, and the liberals say it’s good and shows he’s flexible.

Most days Obama is a muslim.

  6. Rip Cord says:

Correct me if I’m wrong but the LAST place I would want to get any FACTS would be the Associated Press. Also, the LAST place I would want to get any FINANCIAL news and or explanations would be fom said AP. Or is it just me?

The liberals/left hate Palin simply for one reason (and it is the one reason I love her) she is a living and talking proof of their lies: She is tough while being feminine, she is knowledgeable while not being elitist, she is complicated while being simple, plain or just ‘one of us folks’, she is dedicated to her family while reaching out to help her country and community.

She is in fact that anti-Obama.

No wonder she scares them to death and they hate her.

She is the progressive antidote. It’s like holding up a cross to a vampire – just wish the result would be the same – it’d be so easy to fix things.

    • Liberals Demise says:

I totally agree with you WM4.
For being a mother of 5 …. she is “HOT” and the left doesn’t have anyone close to the beauty and glamor Sarah projects.
(demoncraps have an fugly magnet that attracts the likes of code pink, NOW, ect…. one look at these people is suffice)

Killer looks and a brain that bangs on all cylinders!
      OOOoooo ……..

    • proreason says:

      you nailed it mama.

      Palin is the anti anti-Christ.

  8. RightWinger says:

Barry is destroying our country as fast as he can, but Libs in a complete melt down over Sarah. It’s astonishing to visit various comments sections from different rags and reading Barry supporters postings. You would think they were on the verge of throwing themselves out the windows they are so angry.

It’s pretty interesting when you compare the brains and beauty of Conservative women vs liberal women.

We have Palin, Coulter, Bachmann, Ingraham, Megan Kelly and Gretchen Carlson for starters.

The left has Huffington, Graffalo, Boxer, Pelosi, Randi Rhodes, Rachel Maddow.

Just by that comparison alone, I can understand why the men on the left are a very angry bunch. LOL

  9. canary says:

AP using a Fact Check format is a disgrace. Calvin Woodward is a male swine.
