AP: GOP Wants To Cut Food Stamps 1.3%!

From an apoplectic Associated Press:

GOP proposes cuts to domestic, foreign food aid

By Mary Clare Jalonick, Associated Press – Mon May 23, 2011

WASHINGTON – House Republicans are targeting domestic nutrition programs and international food assistance as they try to control spending in next year’s budget.

In a bill released Monday, Republicans proposed cutting $832 million — or 11 percent — from this year’s budget for the Women, Infants and Children program, which provides food for low-income mothers and children. The 2012 budget proposal for food and farm programs also includes a decrease of almost $457 million, or 23 percent, from international food assistance.

The legislation would cut $2 billion from food stamps, or about 1.3 percent of the feeding program’s giant $67 billion budget

The GOP wants to cut 1.3% from the food stamps program! How outrageous! And never mind that Mr. Obama’s ‘stimulus’ package increased government funding for the food stamps program by $20 billion dollars in 2009. Which was an increase of 14% over previous spending levels.

And never mind that this increase in food stamp funding was only supposed to be temporary and that it was originally scheduled to end at the close of fiscal year 2011 – which is next November.

And also never mind that the ‘Great Recession’ has been officially over for almost two years now.

Republicans who wrote the bill said the cuts in domestic food programs are taken from excess dollars in those accounts, and participants won’t see a decrease in services.

Domestic nutrition programs are mined for dollars in tight budget times because they often have extra money sitting in their accounts. Money is allocated for the programs based on projections of need and food costs, and those needs are sometimes overestimated.

But that doesn’t make for good headlines or Democrat attack ads.

Hunger advocates [sic] have warned against stripping those programs of those reserves. Two analysts from the liberal research and advocacy group Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Zoe Neuberger and Robert Greenstein, said Monday that the cuts could mean turning away as many as 475,000 people from the Women, Infants and Children program if food prices continue to rise.

Needless to say, the Center On Budget And Policy Priorities is just another leftwing front group. And, of course, their numbers are based upon nothing but (feigned) hysteria.

Almost 9 million low-income mothers and children participate in the WIC program, which provides food, health care referrals and nutrition education.

Which is an appalling number in its own right.

Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., said the GOP budget "rolls back years of progress."

"This budget threatens the health and security of American families, while asking the most of low-income seniors and the most vulnerable among us," she said

In other words, even though the spending for food stamps was temporarily ratcheted up 20% over its usual levels because of the recession, it can never be lowered again. This is exactly how the Democrat Party ‘progresses,’ year in and year out.

Meanwhile, just look around. It’s clear that ‘the poor’ are practically wasting away from lack of food.

How hard is this to understand?

★ Welfare? States pay for it.
★ School food payoffs for minority voters? –States or districts can feed their own freeloaders.
★Homeless? Cities can fund their own crop of traveling homeless people.

People should still have the right to uproot their families, move to greener pastures if the state gov’t is corrupt, abusive, wasteful, and the public schools are a fascist / socialist nightmare. Areas that support and fund this stuff should wither on the vine. If the federal gov’t funds it there is no where you can go to escape it.

I have had my fill with how this type of argument is framed by libtards. Why is it automatically accepted that sympathy has to be given to all of these “low-income mothers”. I am willing to bet that the vast majority of them are single and are mothers in the first place due to their own irresponsibility.

Therefore, why is it my responsibility as a tax paying citizen that I have to support their bad behavior. I raised three girls on my own dime, and not in a broken household. I worked hard and sacrificed in order to do that. I never asked, wanted, nor received alms from my fellow citizens using the force of the government to receive them. It’s not too much to ask of my fellow citizens to behave responsibly and if they don’t then THEY will have to live with the consequences, no me or the rest of the tax paying public.

I wish that all the Joe and Jane Taxpayers would stand up and say “ENOUGH!”, but alas the idiocracy has taken over where it seems that folks just roll over accept their fate. It’s almost like riding on an airplane that is in a terminal dive because we gave the engines away. It’s amazing that the nine million figure is accepted and no one is talking about how to reduce/eliminate that number.

By the way, IMHO Mythrandir is spot on.

You comments are right on! Brilliant!

I love the fluff phrases like “domestic nutrition programs and international food assistance” that the AP uses to brain wash the masses into thinking Republican bad, Democrat good. I am so sick of this president and the media that puts him on a pedestal I could scream.

There they go, subliminal crosshairs on the Black Community again. Raaaaacists.

  4. Warren says:

What happened to PARENTS buying food for children? Oh, sorry, I guess adult beverages are more important than food.
And besides, with the growth of the economy, there should be plenty of jobs.

  5. Liberals Demise says:

Stop feeding the world and………..POOF……….we can feed our non responsible and professional welfare riders!
Feed them just don’t give them any spendable cash, period!

    • Right of the People says:

Let’s carry it even further. Stop sending money to any country that’s not willing to put their collective asses on the line to help protect us! Why do we give money to countries like Egypt or for that matter any third world s**thole in the Middle East except for Israel the only real democracy in the region?

As far as food “assistance” here in the states, bring back food stamps. Get rid of these debt card look-alikes they’ve come up with so the users won’t feel ashamed. If you’re taking my tax money because your worthless butt won’t work, you should be ashamed. Same with these single mothers who have never been married, who probably don’t even know who the daddy is. Shame is a good thing. Being a single mother used to be a stigma but not anymore. Not since the liberal media has risen these “martyrs” to sainthood for being “brave” enough to raise little junior on their own.

There’s a recession out there, let the leaches share the pain.

The wic programs wouldn’t be such a problem if they kept it to baby’s. It’s til their 5 when they use regular milk, ceareal, juice. I think by labels in the stores the few items have been expanded.

It’s the food stamps the govt won’t fix. The amount per month is enormous. I watch so many overweight
people buying healthy expensive food, and yes, not to be racist, but most are minorities, but what bothers me is the Mexicans who can’t speak English. And I’m not exaggerating, when I say all are overweight, some obese, though there may be some not overweight that I don’t see.

So…the govt knowing for years people sell and trade their food stamps for decades for money and illegal drugs.

Now the government think they are clever to assign pin numbers to give the cashiers. So, all now people just have to give the pin number to whoever they give or trade the stamps to.

Why not picture I.D.s? Is it the ACLU who is preventing this.

Dr. Senator James Coburn OK-R said I believe he has a plan to cut 10 trillion dollars from the deficit.
Caught the tail end on FOX, but I do believe he said 10 trillion cuts. He said something he did not have privy to knowing, and so I guess this goes with the insanity of the 1st Senator leader on the military to see photo’s of Bin Laden deaths. Still, I really like Herman McCain, but he should have something to say about the wars other than Obama’s war in Libya being reason to rid Obama, rather than not being privy.
There is no doubt that Republican Senators are still being isolated, and the non-transparency of Obama’s administration.

Isn’t this what we are looking for? A politician that has a plan. Will anyone get to hear Senator Coburn’s plan, or will Obama continue as the Republicans say to insist the Republicans haven’t presented a plan.

I hope Missouri votes Obama out. FEMA & DHS have only given lip service, at the most accessing
    the situation.

Obama says he’s never seen anything like the tornado damage in Arkansas. Bet he didn’t break a fingernail.
That says to me, he didn’t even lift a finger when New Orleans was flooded, nor visit, just as he did not visit 9/11 in NYC, inspite of all the muslim friends he had there. Nope, he said he flipped the radio station when he heard the first plane hit. It makes me sick seeing video of him half-crocked drinking
Guiness Beer, and started slurring something about fighter Mohammad Allie. Duh, it was John Wayne.

Food stamps used to be enough to purchase cheap food that wouldn’t put your health at risk. Now it has become a dependency program for Democrats. Reason? The rules:
    1) You get a monthly allotment that allows for luxury purchases of food instead of basic items that you could use to cook from scratch. So, steak and sliced deli meat instead of bologna and hamburger.
    2) If you are frugal, there is no benefit. Use it or lose it (so you get used to eating more expensive food)
    3) If you have school-aged kids, they get subsidized breakfast and lunch, but you still get the same amount of food stamps.
    4) If you work hard enough to get over the income limit, the benefit evaporates directly to $0. If you only made that much for a couple of months, due to a seasonal job for instance, you have to reapply (not much of an incentive to work.)

A better plan would be to allow a frugal shopper to roll over a portion of the unused benefit to be used for other essential, non-food items like cleaning supplies, hygiene products and diapers.
