AP: Jobless Skyrocket Because Of Snow

From a completely shameless Associated Press:

Requests for unemployment benefits up due to snow

By Jeannine Aversa, AP Economics Writer
January 27, 2011

WASHINGTON – The number of people applying for unemployment benefits rose sharply last week, but the figures were largely distorted by rare snowstorms that swept through the Southeast.

Applications surged last week by a seasonally adjusted 51,000 to 454,000, the highest level since late October, the Labor Department said Thursday.

A government analyst said that a major reason for the spike was the harsh weather in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. That forced many companies to shut down temporarily and also prevented many people from applying for benefits in the previous week.

When state offices, which had closed, reopened and people were able to file applications that pushed the number of requests up sharply, the analyst said

Does anybody believe that you can collect unemployment if your business closes for a couple of snow days? But when has the AP or shadowy figures from the Obama administration ever let such details get in the way of trying to explain away bad unemployment numbers?

Moreover, even if this is true, why weren’t we told that last week’s ‘good numbers’ were only due to new unemployment claims being delayed because of bad weather? For some reason there was no mention of the weather in any of jobless reports we saw last week.

Applications had been declining steadily for several weeks. Requests for unemployment benefits fell sharply in the previous week to 403,000.

But that was only because of the snow, remember? Sheesh. They just can’t help themselves.

Many economists consider data in January less reliable because of seasonal fluctuations

Which is why these numbers are supposed to be ‘seasonally adjusted’?

Even with last week’s increase, economists are optimistic that layoffs will slow and that hiring will pick up this year.

And why should we believe them? Because Ms. Aversa and the AP want it to be true so very much?

Snow jobs are getting a bit obvious…

    • River0 says:

In the spring they’ll say, “Joblessness rises due to good weather and flowers. People enjoying nature in all their free time”. Then it will be, “Unemployment hits new high as Americans go on summer vacation.” And later, “Unemployed doing their holiday shopping early, getting ready for festivities, no time for job seeking!”

Tucson severed once and for all the liberals’ medias connection with reality.

The next two years are going to be a wild ride.

My concern is that the Republicans are too timid to call the criminals out. Fox isn’t enough, and they have been put on notice anyway. O’Reilly isn’t going to state the obvious truth about Obamy. If he did, how would he get another intereview? So if the political “leaders” of the Republicans don’t do what Jim Demint did yesterday and say forthrightly “he lies”, then a lot of people are going to believe the liars in the media.

Not to split hairs, but it was the “perception” of the media’s connection with reality that died after Tucson.
Only the painfully stupid and willfully ignorant will take them seriously anymore. And they’re still only half
      of our population.

Isn’t this jobless report for last week? LOL

The answer to unemployment… global warming.

Now that we know for sure that snow causes unemployment, then we can be sure that higher temperatures will bolster the job market, can’t we? We should take the initiative and begin burning more fossil fuels, invest in evil incandescent light bulbs, begin cutting down more rain forests, start building large open coal plants, continue to drive more and larger SUVs, and generally carry on enviro-cranky. It’s all for the benefit of the poor and the jobless. [sniffle] Do it for the children.[sob]

  5. spudmom says:

It’s amazing that all these people cannot manage to get to work because of snow, but can manage to get to the unemployment office to file for benefits. What will be the excuse for the next rise? Spring allergies?

  6. wardmama4 says:

And of course, as Rush mentioned, there never was a terrible snow during the evil bushitlerburton co regime years. At. All. Ever.

As Obama would say – WTF?????

  7. Reality Bytes says:

Cause, “the dog ate my jobs bill” was already taken.

  8. wirenut says:

Sun spots, Moon phases or Mad Cow Disease can’t be far away to explain this vexing problem. With so much “GLOBAL WARMING” accumulating on the ground, one would think, have shovel, have job. No!!!! It can’t be our current lost generation in charge, could it? Noooooo!!! Coming soon to a tar-paper shack near you, [Rain of Tyranny Produces Bumper Crop]……. Enough!

  9. Oracle says:

My several short stints on unemployment was always handled via internet. There was not place to “go” to file for the cheese. Phone or online. Snow! Wrong.

Aren’t we LUCKY it didn’t snow while Bush was president!!
