AP Lies About Cause Of Jobless Claims Surge

From the Obama campaign’s Associated Press:

US unemployment aid applications jump to 388K

By CHRISTOPHER S. RUGABER | Thurs October 18, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) – Weekly applications for U.S. unemployment benefits jumped 46,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 388,000, the highest in four months.

That is a huge jump. And notice that it puts us way over the magical number of 375,000, which we are regularly told is the number where the job market can be said to be growing.

The increase represents a rebound from the previous week’s sharp drop. Both swings were largely due to technical factors

Funny, we weren’t told that last week when the news media and the rest of the Obama campaign were crowing about the drop in jobless claims. Last week’s headline and lead from the AP were:

"US unemployment aid applications plunge to 339K, fewest in 4 ½ years; hopeful sign for hiring – The number of Americans seeking unemployment aid plummeted last week to seasonally adjusted 339,000, the lowest level in more than four years. The sharp drop offered a hopeful sign that the job market could pick up."

In fact, the AP did not mention any "technical factors" at all. Instead, they spend all their time trying to convince us once again that the job market had finally turned the corner. Just in time to give ammo to Biden and Obama for the two upcoming VP and Presidential debates.

Last week, California reported a large drop in applications, pushing down the overall figure to the lowest since February 2008. This week, it reported a significant increase as it processed applications delayed from the previous week.

What a lie. The DOL’s press release mentioned in passing that a state had not reported their jobless claims for the week. A detail that was studiously ignored by the mainstream media. It was ‘rightwing’ blogs that reported that the state was California.

In any case, many of us noted it was the lack of their jobless claims that gave the illusion that the claims had gone down.

A department spokesman said the seasonally adjusted numbers "are being distorted … by an issue of timing."

What a laugh. It should be clear to all by now that these numbers are being adjusted for the ‘campaign season.’ That is the issue of timing.

And speaking of the mainstream media, last week’s number was revised up 3,000. This now makes 38 weeks in a row and 84 of the last 85 weeks that the number of new claims has been quietly revised up.

A phenomenon that our one party news media still has not mentioned even once.

“A department spokesman said the seasonally adjusted numbers ‘are being distorted … by an issue of timing.’”

What the heck is an “issue of timing” when it comes to seasonal labor cycles? Are we to believe that holidays don’t occur at the same times each year? Did autumn somehow come before summer this year?

Let’s just end this ridiculous practice of seasonal adjustments for jobless claims, and simply report the gross number. It will be far simpler and more meaningful…oh wait, this is the government, we’re SOL.

I wonder how many thousand people work on these fraudulent seasonal adjustments.
