Mrs. Obama bringing glamor to Moscow this weekend

By Catrina Stewart, Associated Press Writer – Sat Jul 4

MOSCOW – Michelle Obama brings her superstar glamor [sic] to Moscow this weekend as she accompanies her husband on his summit with the Russian president.

But the American first lady, who has wowed publics [sic] in the U.S. and Europe with her easy elegance and charm, will perhaps face a bigger challenge in winning over a Russian public that has scant respect for women who grab the limelight from their powerful husbands.

In a country where a presidential candidate once quipped he’d sooner pack his wife off to a convent than allow her to dabble in politics, Russia still has trouble with the concept of an empowered woman behind the throne.

"The institution of first lady in Russia is still quite young," said Alyona Doletskaya, editor of Russian Vogue and doyenne of the Moscow fashion scene. "So there are no huge expectations on the part of Russian public."

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s wife Svetlana is pious [sic] and discreet and met her husband while she was a schoolgirl. She supports charity and the arts, but has assumed no independent voice on issues facing the country. She dresses conservatively, lacking the edgy fashion sense that has attracted a nationwide following for Michelle Obama.

Russia has known one iconic first lady in modern times: Raisa Gorbachev, wife of the last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who was much loved around the world for breaking with tradition by appearing regularly in public with her husband, embracing high fashion and firing off wisecracks during official foreign trips

In the United States, first ladies are accustomed to coming under the media spotlight — and Michelle Obama seems to revel in it.

On a recent trip to Paris, she impressed the fashion-conscious French with her chic designer outfits standing side-by-side with the country’s former supermodel First Lady Carla Bruni. In Britain, she famously breached palace protocol by putting her arm around Queen Elizabeth II.

And she does not hesitate to speak her mind on a range of important social issues, such as health and education.

Many Russians, traditionally conservative, look askance at such assertiveness.

"A wife should be sitting at home, creating comfort and cooking food," said Zoya Getmanova, a female pensioner living in Moscow. "She could express her opinions over the dinner table, but she shouldn’t meddle in politics." …

Michelle Obama’s fashion sense attracts comparisons with Jacqueline Kennedy, and there is a Web site entirely dedicated to what she wears…

We realize it’s a summer holiday weekend.

But you would think the Associated Press could find a reporter who knows how to spell ‘glamour.’

Especially when that is the propaganda point they are trying to push across.

(Thanks to U No Hoo for the heads up.)

Satire, parody, skepticism, cynicism, or stupidity?

Or fawning, slobbering love by state owned media?

    Happy Fourth!

  2. MinnesotaRush

If this photo is representing mrs. o-blah-blah’s “glamor” for the reporterette, I’d hate to bump into her in a dark alley in Jersey (or anywhere for that matter).

If looks could kill, the French president would have been a widower by now. Look at that disdainful and jealous look from m.o. – says a lot, ‘ay.

The Good (on the left) .. the Bad, and Ugly .. (on the right)

Hey .. a safe, fun, & blessed 4th to all the folks (and friends) at S&L!!!

  3. Celina

I just don’t see what is so appealing about this woman. And “glamor”? I just don’t see it. Isn’t calling a woman a snappy dresser a bit condescending to that crowd anyway? When will they stop trying to convince us (themselves?) that she is the epitome of style, grace, and beauty?

    Happy 4th of July!!

  4. Rusty Shackleford

Steve may have had the photo beforehand but I sent it to him some weeks ago, noting the same things you did M-R.

In her expression, I read hatred, contempt and sour bitterness over something…but I’ll never know what, though I suspect it’s all contrived anger over perceived injustices in the U.S. The irony, of course is that she’s glaring at the first lady of FRANCE, who, I can fairly attest, never had anything to do with, or was connected with in any way, any racial injustices of the U.S. Yet, she still gets the stink-eye from Blammo’s number one. How’s that for “glamour” and “grace”.

And the story, noting comparisons to Jackie-O….uh…..well…I have to go vomit now.

    • tranquil.night

I think Michelle was glaring at Bruni because the woman is naturally about 10 times more attractive (I offer that opinion with absolutely no bias, racially or otherwise) than her and doesn’t need to have a bureau of stylists and reporters always following her around the world to feel validated.

That being said there’s just so much wrong with this article. “The institution of First Lady is still very young”? Yeah, maybe because there’s never been one to turn the position into an institution! An institution? What’s the message of BigFish’s institution: “I’m better than you. Deal with it.”

“..an empowered woman behind the throne.”?

Wow, what a power player. What a class act.

      What a joke.

    Lucky Obamy.

He’ll never need to buy another nutcracker again.

  6. jobeth

What’s she so angry at? Bet is has something to do with the beauty she can’t have. Grace she can’t have…Charm she can’t have….

How dare them NOT be focused on HER.

Note they are all gazing off at something totally unrelated to her own “chic fashon” and “easy elegance and charm”. Notice they are not focused on HER beauty.

Why who can blame her….someone’s going to get fired for not getting that memo out to that group…!

    • catie

Jobeth, that’s my thoughts-what in the world is she so angry about? She went to the finest universities this country has to offer, she has two beautiful and most importantly healthy girls and a husband who loves her. What the hell is wrong with this woman? She’s about 6 weeks older than I am and I have no idea in what America she grew up in. The neighborhood she grew up in used to be one of the neighborhoods my father ran around in when he was a young kid. However that all changed in the 50’s and whitey had to move out either voluntarily or through force (of crime). I don’t get it.
Yeah, Carla is an Italian heiress, is beautiful but just like the Belle, she is also First Lady of a country. However nice France may be to visit, it’s not America and I cannot for the life of me figure out why BHO & the Belle are the unhappiest people on the planet.

You know I just can’t stand it anymore. This woman has to be the nastiest, meanest looking ghetto slut I think I have ever seen. I can’t stand her and I am ashamed that she is the “first lady”. I am so very grateful we have a forum like this to vent. I don’t really even know for how long with this thug in the White House. This is the greatest and most generous country that has ever existed on the face of the earth with more opportunity than anyone could have imagined and these mental midgets seek to destroy it. All I can hope for is that men and women have tried before and not succeeded and hopefully they won’t this time. God bless America happy 4th.

    • jobeth

“You know I just can’t stand it anymore. This woman has to be the nastiest, meanest looking ghetto slut I think I have ever seen. ”

Vman! Loosen up some!…You are just going to have to stop bottling up so much. Just say what you are thinking! Let it out! LOL

      Couldn’t agree with you more!

  8. Yarddog1

This woman certainly brings all the “gangsta” glamor of the “hood” that I see on so many Black faces in Montgomery, Alabama. “My ancestors were slaves, I don’t like Whitey, I am entitled to anything I want without effort, you owe me and I will always carry this chip on my shoulder because I have embraced a philosophy of racial hatred”.

For a woman who has had virtually everything handed to her because she is black and lives a life of caviar and champagne, she sure is pissed off.

And – there ain’t nothing glamorous about this bitter hateful mule faced “sista”!

  9. VMAN

My daughter tells me that “glamor” spelled like this has to do with “vampire glamor”. I think that is appropriate for this blood sucking bitch.

  10. U NO HOO

    “Grace she can’t have…Charm she can’t have….”

    …unless she wants them?

Mother Theresa had grace and charm and wore the same style dress everyday.

    MO, take the hint.

  11. Celina

Taking a second look at that pictures I have to ask.

Has anyone seen the movie “The Dark Crystal’? If you remember it (it was released in the early or mid 80’s), I think you might know what I mean.

    • jobeth

I haven’t seen the movie, but you can almost read her mind as she plots ways to do in her rivals. That is a purely evil look in her eyes.

By the way…I went back to the AP story via the link Steve provided and the AP had to go back to the beginning of April to get a halfway decent photo of her.

I thought she was so glamorous. If so seems that she would have had a more recent photo of glamorous self. LOL Does that mean she hasn’t worn anything “chic” in the last 3 months?

My, my, that’s not leading the masses in fashion now is it?

    • AmericanIPA

      Aughra! You got it.

  12. TwilightZoned

The look on the belle’s face may suggest a low emotional quotient. At least a real belle is polite enough to wait until the person is out of sight.

  13. AmericanIPA

Who’s the good-looking lady sitting next to Ru Paul? Now that’s glamor baby.

    • Liberals Demise

Mitchelle looks like she was asked to pass a party tray around …. I mean as long as she looks like the help, might as well “MAN” a tray of snails!!

  14. wirenut

Maybe glamor is really codeword for Barry. Then the headline would seem to be correct. AP can throw glamor at Mitch…Err Michelle all day long, doesn’t mean it’s going to stick. I sugguest a good autobody filler and plenty of sandpaper.

  15. Carla is drop-dead gorgeous!

Michelle Obama is a bitter and twisted Fugly (in Oz, Effing Ugly) that cannot hold back her jealousy and contempt, she is a true “Would Be if she Could Be” Just like the neanderthal cretin she is “married” to.

They will soon be erased from the Annals (in Obama’s case, the Anal’s, given his raging homosexual and drug-filled past) of History!!

Irrelevant impostors that will soon face their “G-d” – better known as the God of Islam, Lucifer!

  16. wardmama4

I think MN Rush nailed it – if looks could kill.

How this woman can be so stupidly dressed (and one of my guilty pleasures is ANTM – so I do know the difference between the high fashion and stupidly dressed) and look so damn p’doff so much of the time is beyond me.

Catie – not only that your father came from that area – but damn it all – she grew up just like the rest of us did. Black, white – middle class or poor – we all came from families who did their best, struggled and if they were hard working enough had some good times – but to act like (I am going to assume here) that because she is black – she is the only person who grew up struggling and not liked (maybe MO, it’s your ‘tude not your color, on that one) is just so damn arrogant.

Why is it so many Liberal women are the ugliest, meanest, most nasty women there are? Now there is a research question for the ages.

    • Rusty Shackleford

“(maybe MO, it’s your ‘tude not your color, on that one)”

WM, you make an interesting and glaring point. Whilst in the military (oh no…not another “war story”) I frequently ran into blacks who were arrogant, obnoxious and so overwhelmingly insecure that their presence permeated the room like a bad smell.

I recall one conversation I had with one fellow, who held the same rank as I. We were having a fairly decent time and I noted that because of his last name, it matched my mother’s mother’s maiden name and I wondered if somewhere our family lines had crossed.

As the conversation continued, I became curious as to what his heritage was and seeing as he had no qualms about my Scots/Irish background, I asked, “So what are you, arab? Or…something middle-eastern, perhaps?” as to me…he looked to have the features of a middle-eastern male.

His demeanor suddenly changed and the fun in our conversation turned to hatred. “I’m BLACK dammit” and he was furious.

Then I made my second “mistake” and said, plainly, “Look, ________, I don’t care WHAT you are. I simply assumed we’re friends and that stuff shouldn’t matter…I mean, it doesn’t matter to me in the least. You’re a person…I’m a person…we hold the same rank and so what?”

Well, the meaning of what I said was plain enough to me. I meant exactly what I said. But to him…it meant the following:

“You are such a typical white person. You fail to acknowledge my (people’s) struggle throughout the ages. You are a racist and a slaveholder. You like the confederate flag. You think all blacks are stupid and should be exterminated”

I realize the subtle nuance between what I said and what he understood can be difficult to discern but in later months, I simply laid it out for him. I said, during the course of yet another unpleasant exchange, “Look…you think I don’t like you because you’re black Fine. But the truth is that I don’t like you because you’re an asshole. So, now you have something to put in your pocket that you can keep.”

I remember it like it was yesterday. The guy turned me in to social actions and I repeated to them what I said to him. I have had supervisors that were of all races and both genders..and have supervised same. Never a problem. None…nada….zip. This clown comes along and because of his enormous insecurity, picks a fight with me.

And, noting MO’s stank-ass demeanor, it is obvious to me that I’m seeing the same thing again. The guy I had to deal with in the USAF was a USNA graduate, cross-commissioned into the USAF, was washed out of navigator school, then washed out of ground weapons controller school, was in constant legal trouble, with at least one time for stealing money and you would THINK that having been an academy graduate, he would at least realize that he had something going for him.

This same guy, in the middle of lunch at the O’club with all us lieutenants at the same table, stood up, positioned himself over me and almost yelled, “You will NEVER be as good as me at ANYTHING you ever do….do you understand me?!!!”

I quietly continued to eat my lunch and shake my head. I was waiting for him to hit me and then I would have him. But….that never happened.

However, with all that said…there are arrogant people of all stripes and they will utilize anything at their disposal to justify themselves. In this case…his being black was his excuse for why things didn’t go his way. Plus, he was internally very angry. I see the same things in Blammo’s overly aggressive mate.

And again, I have to ask, why are and what makes these people so angry? And I always come up with the same answer…that they realize they are short on talent and achievement.

In other words, they excel at being average or even slightly to significantly BELOW average in most things. They progress through life by “playing” people to get them to do what they want and when they run up against someone who, like me, won’t play their game, they try to find a way to destroy them.

And yes, that guy in the USAF did try….it backfired and he caught hell for it.

But then, that’s because the USAF is racist. Right?
