AP Cuts China From Hummer Sale Story

This is currently the latest Associated Press article about Obama’s sale of the Hummer brand:

GM strikes tentative deal to sell Hummer brand

By Bree Fowler And Dan Strumpf, Ap Auto Writers – 5 mins ago

NEW YORK – General Motors Corp. took two key steps toward its downsizing on Tuesday, striking a tentative agreement to sell its Hummer brand and obtaining the first payout of federal loans for its European division.

Detroit-based GM said it has reached a memorandum of understanding with a buyer for Hummer, though it did not name the buyer or the price. The automaker said the sale will likely save more than 3,000 U.S. jobs in manufacturing, engineering and at various Hummer dealerships.

"We’re not today in a position to be able to identify a buyer. It was part of the agreement," GM Chief Executive Fritz Henderson told CBS’s "The Early Show." "We believe the buyer is quite capable of closing." …

Oddly enough there is no mention anywhere in the article that Mr. Obama is selling the Hummer nameplate to the Communist Chinese.

Even though that detail has been extensively reported for several hours by the rest of our watchdog media, such as the New York Times:

Chinese Company Said to Be Buyer of Hummer

By KEITH BRADSHER and NICK BUNKLEY

June 2, 2009

GUANGZHOU, China — General Motors has reached a preliminary agreement for the sale of its Hummer brand of large sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks to a machinery company in western China with ambitions to become a carmaker, a person familiar with the Chinese government approval process said Tuesday.

The Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company Ltd., based in Chengdu, concluded the agreement with G.M., said the person, who insisted on anonymity.

Sichuan Tengzhong is a privately owned company, but Tuesday’s deal required preliminary vetting by Beijing officials, who retain the right to veto any effort at an overseas acquisition by a Chinese company and who give special attention to deals over $100 million.

G.M. announced the deal early Tuesday morning in Detroit but said that the memorandum of understanding would not allow it to reveal the buyer or the price. Industry analysts have estimated that the Hummer division would sell for less than $500 million.

G.M., in a blog posting, said it had seen the report regarding a Hummer buyer but could not comment on speculation…

Why is Mr. Obama being so shy about selling to the Chinese?

And why is the AP helping him keep that quiet? But they have no problem printing this lie:

The automaker said the sale will likely save more than 3,000 U.S. jobs in manufacturing, engineering and at various Hummer dealerships.

Lies, all lies.

” the sale of its Hummer brand of large sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks to a machinery company in western China”

Is this what all American car companies are going to have to do in order to keep vans, trucks, SUVs, and Hummers on the road after the 2016 emissions kick in? Or are international companies bound by the same limits on autos sold within the U.S.?

Way to make it impossible to build good cars here…

If Obama has his way, we’ll all be driving those little clown cars. But, ladies, don’t worry about looking ridiculous behind the wheel. If Obama has his way, nobody will recognize us — in our burkas…

“Why is Mr. Obama being so shy about selling to the Chinese?”

    Because Hummers have military value.

Americans might not be too thrilled with reducing our ability to manufacture a key military vehicle, not to speak of the disclosure of trade secrets.

What rational observor could possibly say that The Moron is trying to protect us?

    • BannedbytheTaliban says:

Also Hummer was the iconic planet killing SUV line that was attacked by the greenies. Questions would arise as to why they would dump hummer, as apposed to a division like Saturn that makes fuel efficient rolling coffins. That is if we really did have a watch-dog media.

    • Liberals Demise says:

The same reason Clinton was being shy selling U.S. missile gyros to the Chinks. You didn’t hear of this in the media except for Rushs’ show back in the mid 90’s.
The Moron can’t and won’t protect us …..He’s just feathering Micheles’ nest!

Yet another nail in the Mediocre States of America coffin that the New World Order Dear Leader wants. So sad, the USA used to have so much promise for freedom, liberty and prosperity.

  4. Assuming they will attempt to build Hummers here still, means the Chinese will now have to deal with the UAW. Perhaps a new era of “empathy” might arise.

Hilariously, the AP has finally been shamed into updating their article:

Remember the campaign? All of the talk about sending jobs overseas? Well, Obama has taken over two of the largest companies in America and has sold whole or part of each to a foreign entity.

Don’t worry though; Sichuan Tengzhong is a privately owned company. Like GM.

I have been hearing all day that Hummer isn’t the same as the HumVee.

Is AM General part of Gov Motors?

I thought it was a separate company.

My guess the secrecy is Obama may be giving them to China to reduce our debt. Since Fed Govt owns GM at the moment, we should be allowed to know. So much for transparency, and waste of Hillary’s trip apologizing to China that America caused their global warming, and lecture for them to clean their air.
Those GM hummer/humvees, new and old, are stockpiled, when gas prices and greenies, they couldn’t give them away.
hmm. Maybe that’s where the fighter jets Obama did away with are going too.

  9. BillK says:

Just to clarify, AM General, which makes the military HMMWVs and made the H1 and H2 under contract for GM, is not a part of GM and so the sale of the Hummer brand does not involve the sale of AM General:

Due in part to the military HMMWV’s success in Desert Storm, AM General introduced a civilian version of the vehicle called the HUMMER in 1992. Known as “the world’s most serious 4×4,” the revolutionary vehicle has found favor with commercial users who appreciated the value of HUMMER’s long life and amazing performance, and individuals who seek the ultimate in toughness and mobility. In 1999, General Motors acquired the HUMMER brand worldwide and rebadged the original vehicle H1. In 2002, AM General began assembling the HUMMER H2 for GM in its new factory in Mishawaka, Ind. This vehicle was designed by and is marketed by General Motors. In 2006, production of the H1 ceased. Although GM acquired the HUMMER brand, they do not own any part of AM General.

er, so the US can’t make those big, nasty gas-guzzling GLOBAL warmers … but it’s okay for China to make ’em? Is China on a different globe?
