AP: Racism Made CT Man Steal Beer, Kill 8

From a colorblind Associated Press:

Family: Racial bias caused Conn. shooter to snap

MANCHESTER, Conn. – Omar Thornton sat calmly in a meeting with union representative and his supervisors as they showed a video of him stealing beer from the distributor where he worked.

Busted, he didn’t put up a fight, company officials said. He quietly signed a letter of resignation and was headed for the door when he pulled out a gun and started firing — "cold as ice," as one survivor described it.

In the end, Thornton killed eight people, injured two, then turned the gun on himself in a rampage Tuesday at Hartford Distributors that union and company officials said they would not have anticipated from someone with no history of complaints or disciplinary problems.

Yet relatives say Thornton, 34, finally cracked after suffering racial harassment in a company where he said he was singled out for being black in a predominantly white work force.

"Everybody’s got a breaking point," said Joanne Hannah, the mother of Thornton’s longtime girlfriend.

After shooting his co-workers, Thornton hid as police moved in. He called his mother, who tried for 10 minutes to talk him out of killing himself, his uncle Will Holliday told reporters.

"He said, ‘I killed the five racists that was there that was bothering me,’" Holliday said. "He said, ‘The cops are going to come in so I am going to take care of myself.’" …

Thornton had said he found a picture of a noose and a racial epithet written on a bathroom wall, said Hannah, of Enfield, whose daughter Kristi had dated Thornton for the past eight years. Her daughter told her that Thornton’s supervisors said they would talk to his co-workers.

Let’s hope the family can parlay this probably bogus claim into a whopping lawsuit against the dead racist co-workers.

Brett Hollander, whose family owns the distributor, denied any racial bias. And a union official said Thornton had not filed a complaint of racism with the union or any government agency.

"I can assure you there has never been any racial discrimination at our company," Hollander said.

Teamsters official Christopher Roos said, "This is a disgruntled employee who shot a bunch of people."

How can any black person in America be ‘gruntled’ with the steady stream of purported racism they have poured into them by our political leaders and watchdog media?

Company vice president Steve Hollander told The Associated Press he was stunned by Thornton’s rampage after a meeting in which he calmly agreed to resign instead of being fired:

"He was cool and calm. He didn’t yell. He was cold as ice. He didn’t protest when we were meeting with him to show him the video of him stealing. He didn’t contest it. He didn’t complain. He didn’t argue. He didn’t admit or deny anything. He just agreed to resign. And then he just unexplainably pulled out his gun and started blasting." …

Thornton was not a problem employee and had not had any previous disciplinary issues, said Gregg Adler, a lawyer for the Teamsters Local 1035. He said he was not aware of how much beer Thornton was accused of stealing…

Among the dead was Bryan Cirigliano, 51, of Newington, president of Teamsters 1035, according to the union. He had been Thornton’s representative at Tuesday’s disciplinary hearing, the union said…

The Hollander family is widely respected in Manchester, said state Rep. Ryan Barry, a lifelong resident. He said the family-owned Hartford Distributors sponsors local sports teams

They are undoubtedly racist sports teams.

Steal some beer…..get caught……..shoot up some honkey krackers and off yourself. Family shakes the racism tree to rake up a score of moola or to start Urban Renewal (riots).

This boob went to work with the gun knowing he was going to gank people.
No sympathy for the criminal who happened to be black. He got what he deserved but the others did not.

Call me a cynic, but at least he took out a couple of union goons as he went.

You’re right, LD, he knew when he went there what he was going to do.

And Rusty’s right as well. This is some more of that post-racial goodwill that Obama ushered in. It is only a matter of degree.

  3. Rusty Shackleford says:

The same guy occupies the white house right now.

  4. BannedbytheTaliban says:

Why can’t these murder-suicide people just kill themselves first?

  5. bill says:

I say the shooter acted stupidly … Just like the racist in the White House does.

Funny there is no discrimination complaints on file before … Is our president causing others to cry racism?

    Be armed, be safe.

  6. Right of the People says:

I don’t understand since The Won said that this is a post-racial world now. How could this happen? After all like the man said, “We in charge now, we gots our man in the white house, cracker.”

  7. VMAN says:

If you want to be treated like an equal then act like one

  8. chainsaw says:

Sad, very very sad for the innocent. Probably a Christian militia Uncle Tom…….ya think. Do you ever notice when whitey does something stupid it’s because they are (fill in the blank) but when a minority does something henous, it’s someone/thing else’s fault? Why is that? Is it because the “system” just wasn’t quite good enough? My prayers to the innocent.

i know this is not going to be a popular sentiment here, but:

this clown has no idea what he’s talking about. zero.

i’m in no way condoning or excusing this murderer. but “never been any……..”

    pot, meet mark furhmann.

it’s been my experience, and i work for an industrial contractor so i get around, that union shops are bastions of racist thought and especially those in the northeast.

clowns like this who think they know every little thing that goes on in their company generally don’t know squat.

this sounds like a woman when told her little johnny got caught cussing like a sailor exclaims, “my child doesn’t act like that!”

    • Rusty Shackleford says:

fb, your point is well-taken but it’s been my experience that when a single black guy is in an environment that is predominantly white, they don’t understand that it’s a culture difference, not racism.

One can debate about the reasons for this but I am also aware that ever since my first years in the military in the late 70’s I noticed that blacks separated themselves from the whites, even when in the same unit, doing the same job. They would usher themselves off to a corner of the room and talk their dialect and if any white guy asked them for a cigarette or a question, they got the stink-eye.

This intentional and voluntary segregation has resulted in a separation of cultures by their own choice. Thus, when all the “white dudes” are talking about their kids in sports, or wife problems, they see it from their own perspective and they have common ground. The black guy may feel intentionally left out but it’s often the result of not having that common ground more than anything else. Plus, it’s also been my experience that in New England, people are treated well based on merit and nobody will make a special effort to make anyone feel either uncomfortable or comfortable. The cold, stand-offish nature of the people of the region is well known but could, I suppose, be misinterpreted as racism.

I personally don’t like that part of the country for that very reason. The cutting, snide sense of humor they have tends to grate on me. Not to mention the constant one-upmanship in just about everything they do..which is not uncommon in most of the country but takes on a special personality there.

I personally think from what I have read so far that the murderer’s problems go much deeper than racism, real or imagined. I will grant that it’s probably very hard to be the only black guy in a workplace. However, the real test of character is how a person chooses to deal with it. Violence is almost always not the correct solution. If he had a problem, we live in an age where he could’ve explored many different avenues from inside the workplace to the labor board to state and even federal officials. Yet he chose the path he did. And I condemn him for it. I curse his name. I don’t care what his problem was. His actions are indefensible.

  10. canary says:

Omar? Was he a muslim? He was ‘not the only black guy’ others would have been aware.
Offering him to resign instead of firing him, or criminally charging him, doesn’t sound racist to me. And the union rep he killed is probably the one who got management to go easy on him.
Did he have a drinking problem? Who risks stealing beer and losing a job especially in these times.

  11. NoNeoCommies says:

If the company were all minority and a white man did this, they could get away with never hiring a Caucasian again.

  12. Reality Bytes says:

The man acted STUPIDLY. Now there’s a beer summit!
