AP Says Pentagon To Cut Sequester Furlough Days

From a gob-smacked Associated Press:

AP sources: Pentagon likely to cut furlough days

By LOLITA C. BALDOR | July 29, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense department civilians will likely face up to five fewer unpaid furlough days than originally planned, as Pentagon leaders scrimp to find up to $900 million in savings in the final months of the budget year that ends Sept. 30, officials told The Associated Press.

Officials said no final decisions have been made, but they believe civilian workers will be forced to take six to eight unpaid days off rather than the 11 days that had been scheduled.

The move comes as workers begin their fourth week of furloughs…

In other words, all those apocalyptic sequester furloughs are now only going to be about half what we were told. Still, imagine how many of these civilian government workers will be ticked off at losing five long weekends, after they have made their travel reservations and everything.

(And never mind that a ‘government shutdown’ would be even more of a ‘nothing burger’ than the evil sequester.)

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter by name publicly.

Of course not. In fact, if the Obama administration had had their way, we would never have heard about this.

According to one defense official, current budget projections suggest that if Pentagon budget chiefs find about $500 million in savings, the number of furlough days will be shaved to eight. If they can find $900 million, the furloughs will be cut to six days.

Officials said the savings are the result of a number of things, including penny-pinching by the military services and Congress’ decision to give the Pentagon more flexibility in moving money around between accounts…

That is to say, they did the very things we always said they could do if they wanted to.

I have a friend who is a GS-5 or 6 at Grissom AFB in Indiana. He is forced to take time off unpaid. He is not the least bit impressed with having “long weekends” as they are unpaid and he doesn’t make that much money as it is. He’s not union, but his paycheck comes directly from DoD funds (tax dollars).

I served with him on active duty in the USAF. He is far from lazy. He is an instructor and is not a “fat-cat” by any definition of the word.

His modest pay is seriously cut by these politically motivated pain-inducing actions.

Yet, the amount of paperwork and tasks has not diminished; He just has to do it all in fewer days. Let me ask you if you can increase the number of hours in a day.

It is my opinion that these furloughs were determined directly from the top to p*ss off the people who don’t vote nor would vote democrat in their lives (“Punish your enemies and reward your friends”).

He has been in government military service for over 35 years and has never asked for one blessed thing. His job has him travel a great deal, taking him away from family a lot. Now, in the most insulting aspect of demanding that they “do more with less”, he still has to cover and finish all required elements of his job while being forced to do it without pay. IOW, on his own time or it won’t get done.

So I ask, how is this “making travel reservations and all”?

Additionally, there is strong speculation among the GS community that DoD is simply aligning them for RIF’s next year anyhow.

Not to be confrontational and I don’t know your friend or his situation but I don’t imagine anyone has your friend chained to his desk. He can take his obvious expertise and experience to the private sector and possibly get a better deal….but I doubt it.

I agree with you that he’s being used as a pawn in the democrats evil schemes. All of us are to some degree or another. His experience is just closer to his wallet than mine.

As I write this we are texting about job-searches. NOBODY’s hiring/looking for anyone.

AKA: “We gotcha trapped, sucka”. Can’t leave, can’t stay. Therefore, you WILL become a ward of the state and be chained to welfare. As we intended all along.

I wish him good luck. My girlfriend told me yesterday that Texas is booming. She works, as I did, in the natural gas pipeline right of way and leasing. They are working 60-75 hour weeks. She was describing the road widening projects going on everywhere and how her property taxes went up 20% because her rural property value has risen so fast and she’s 20 miles from Ft. Worth.

Maybe Texas is where your friend should look. Much better climate than South Dakota.

Meanwhile, more F16s for Egypt and ‘Foreign Aid’ dollars flow like tap water to friend and foe alike.

    • Noyzmakr says:

The pentagon (really Obama) has put a hold on the F-16’s because the Egyptian Army threw out Obama’s buddies, the Muslim Brotherhood. That tells me all I need to know about this regime. When Egypt was being run by radical islamists, the regime was all in with aid and more but once the people and army came to their senses and threw out these criminals Obama’s all upset and throws a temper-tantrum. Obama is a radical islamist sympathiser.
