AP: Unlikely 2 Men Were Plotting Terrorism

From the always quick to defend Associated Press:

AP source: Unlikely that 2 men plotting terror

WASHINGTON – The FBI probe of two men arrested in Amsterdam after suspicious items turned up in one of the men’s luggage is finding they were probably not on a test run for a future terror attack, a U.S. official said Tuesday, casting doubt on earlier suggestions even as Dutch authorities held the pair on suspicion of conspiring to commit a terrorist act.

The U.S. does not expect to charge the men, a law enforcement official said. The two men arrested in Amsterdam — both traveling to Yemen — did not know each other and were not traveling together, a U.S. government official said.

The officials spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss the investigation

Because it is important for the AP to get this out quickly, to avoid the dreaded anti-Muslim ‘backlash.’

Both of the detained men missed flights to Dulles International Airport from Chicago, and United Airlines then booked them on the same flight to Amsterdam, the U.S. government official said. The men were sitting near each other on the flight, but not together.

The men were not on any U.S. terror watch lists, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told CNN Tuesday.

Case closed, then.

When Customs officials discovered one passenger was not on the flight from Dulles to Dubai, they called the plane back to the gate and removed his luggage. It was then they discovered suspicious items in his bag, a cell phone taped to a Pepto-Bismol bottle, multiple cell phones and watches taped together, and a knife and box cutter, according to another U.S. official who had been briefed on the investigation…

But nothing suspicious, like hair conditioner or baby formula.

By the way, Pepto-Bismol contains an X-ray dense material, bismuth subsalycylate. Which might shield X-ray scanners from picking up anything taped to it.

A U.S. official identified the men as Ahmed Mohamed Nasser al Soofi and Hezam al Murisi…

Again, there is nothing about their names that should arouse suspicion.

Al Soofi was questioned by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration as he went through security in Birmingham, Ala., Sunday on his way to Chicago, one of the officials said. He told the authorities he was carrying a lot of cash. Screeners found $7,000 on him, but he was not breaking any law by carrying that much money. It is not unusual for people to carry large amounts of cash when they travel to Third World countries.

Of course not.

Al Soofi was supposed to fly from Chicago to Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia and then on to Dubai, one of the officials said. But when he got to Chicago, he changed his travel plans to take a direct flight to Amsterdam, while his luggage went on to Virginia.

On international flights, passengers and their luggage must be headed toward the same destination, according to U.S. policy.

Al Murisi also changed his travel plans in Chicago to take a direct flight to Amsterdam, raising suspicion among U.S. officials. Federal Air marshals were on the flight from Chicago to Amsterdam, a law enforcement official said.

It was obviously just a coincidence that both of these gentlemen sent their baggage on alone on another flight. What harm could there be in that? Why is everyone so suspicious?

The men were arrested Monday morning at Schiphol Airport after getting off a United Airlines flight from Chicago. Under Dutch law, the men can be held without charges for up to six days. No charges have been filed against the men in the U.S., a law enforcement official said

Certainly not. Not under Mr. Holder’s Justice Department.

By the way, note the conspicuous absence of any mention of these two bravos religious persuasion.

Of course, don’t look for Mayor Bloomberg to volunteer to fly WITH them any time soon.

  2. Papa Louie says:

I always tape my cell phones and watches to a bottle of Pepto-Bismol when I fly. What’s suspicious about that? The Pepto comes in handy to calm my stomach after I arrive at my destination and have to spend my evening removing all that tape with a box cutter.

This incident happens just as they are trying to convince the American people to accept a mosque at ground zero. Of course they have to downplay it. It goes against their stated belief that only right-wing extremists and tea party members are to be feared.

Obama’s counterterrorism czar, John Brennan, has made it clear that terrorism and jihad are not our enemies. He said “terror is a state of mind” and “jihad is a holy struggle, a legitimate tenet of Islam meaning to purify oneself in one’s community”. This is their world view and they’re not going to back down from it regardless of how often reality contradicts them.

It’s the same thing with their economic policies. If reality doesn’t agree with them, then reality is in error. Everyone should just close their eyes and blindly follow them as they lead us into utopia, or oblivion, whichever comes first.

  5. P. Aaron says:

These two were not plotting terrorism. They were just doing field work (ating as consultants) for the terror plotters. Didn’t ya know? It’s a whole new cottage industry.

Weren’t there any grannies on that flight?

Looks like the TSA needed something to keep themselves busy.

  7. Colonel1961 says:

Way too close to home – I’ve flown out of Birmingham several times. Glad to know that the TSA is doing everything in its power to keep us safe, er, uh, I mean to keep their jobs and political correctness safe…

(Hello again, friends! Been a while…)

Seems like a dry run to me.

All of our government’s actions have now become laughable. This is no exception.

The end result, without any pursuit of wrongdoing by Stoofi and Stoofier, the US invites more acts. I think it is purely 100% intentional and, in fact, desirable on the part of the socialists in power. Why?

    1) Huge distraction
    2) Opportunity to allow “the won” to “look decisive”
    3) The boy who sits in the president’s chair thinks the US deserves it and has said so on several occasions
    4) It is of no consequence to him, he flies on “HowIRoll-01” and all his socialist pals have gubbmint jets to flit-flop and fly in. Therefore, the only persons in danger are John Q Public who, as we know, is an unwashed, undeserving schlub.
    5) Another terrorist act would give the boy the perfect excuse to take over the airline industry, yet another of his wishes, I’m sure. All in the name of “security” of course. Saul Alinsky 101.

  10. Mithrandir says:

So doing a DRY RUN doesn’t raise any eyebrows?

It is like Bill Clinton not interrogating BIN LADEN because he had no evidence to detain him, even though he knew he wanted to hurt Americans. Anyone else wants to do harm, you can bet the Secret Service would be hauling them in for an interview.

“It is not unusual for people to carry large amounts of cash when they travel to Third World countries.”

Seriously? You have to be kidding me. Although I suppose it is no more unusual than people taping a pile of watches together. I happen to collect watches (when my pissant military salary allows it), but seldom will I tape my Tags to my Baume et Mercier when I travel, although I suppose this is a low bucks method of preventing scratches. Perhaps he spent so much money on the mutiple watches and cell phones, and needed the 7 grand for walking around money in a country where a carton of smokes runs about 2 bucks, and could not afford a small leather case for his watches. If this guy’s name was Bob Smith you wouldn’t find these actions unusual you islamaphobes, you!

How bout we jail them & cut their heads off anyway.

  13. beautyofreason says:

1 liberal nut stabs a Muslim cab driver around the time of the ground zero mosque protests. It gets front page on the news.

2 Muslim nuts (one of whom is a convenience store clerk in the United States) do a dry run presumably in preparation for a mass slaughter of non-Muslims on a civilian airline.
    It scarcely makes the news.

Seems like the 70% of people against the mosque at Ground Zero have a more rational basis for their concerns than a liberal press taking one stabbing as a barometer for nationwide “Islamophobia.”

  14. Liberals Demise says:

    Good call Tater!!

Ah….what does it take to get the LSM to call a dog a dog and a Muslim extremist an asshat?
Surrender AP if you must, but as for the rest of us……….find another job.
    You suck at this one!
