Atheist Wins Right To Wear Strainer For ID

From the UK’s Telegraph:

‘Pastafarian’ wins religious freedom right to wear pasta strainer for driving licence

An Austrian has won the right to be photographed wearing a pasta strainer for his driving licence on grounds of religious freedom.

Niko Alm announced the decision on his blog saying that after three years of struggle a psychologist had passed him fit drive and so he could wear the kitchen implement for the official picture.

Perhaps we should have psychological tests for drivers licenses in our country.

A self-styled "pastafarian", Mr Alm said he belonged to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, which lampooned religion. "Today I was able to get my new driving licence, and in it you can clearly see that I’m wearing a colander on my head to demonstrate my allegiance to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster," Mr Alm wrote in his blog.

"My headwear has now been recognised by the Republic of Austria."

So which side did the ACLU come down on in this? It must have been a tough call for them. But they usually can be counted on to support anyone or anything that mocks religion.

The spaghetti church was founded in 2005 in opposition to pressure on the Kansas school board in the United States to teach the theory of intelligent design in biology class as an alternative to evolution, and since then it has engaged in a light-hearted campaign against religion.

Key to the beliefs of pastafarians is that the world was created by the Flying Spaghetti Monster, but, owing to the monster being inebriated at the time of creation, it has a flawed design.

We have our answer. But what was all that talk about ‘religious freedom’?

Pastafarians also believe heaven has a beer volcano and a factory producing strippers.

Such wit. There is no mention of Mr. Alm’s age, but we can probably assume that he is still in his teens.

By the way, the article also neglects to mention the fact that Mr. Alm claims to be aggressive atheist. In fact, judging by his hawking of T-shirts, he seems to be a professional atheist.

So, again, all that talk about freedom of religion was just hogwash.

Make him wear his headgear whenever he drives (a tinfoil hat will suffice in a pinch).
If he fails to follow his religion’s dictates, pull his license.

So is Niko a pastafarian or a lying atheist? He can’t be both.

  3. P. Aaron says:

He should’ve angled the strainer a bit forward for a ‘hip-hop’ look.

Bravo for a clever man who has managed to advance the recognition of a certain idea by a brilliant stunt. Now if we could only figure out what deep thoughtful idea he was advancing….
