Benghazi Security Chief Murdered By Gunmen

From the Agence France-Presse:

Benghazi security chief assassinated

21 Nov 2012

Fraj al-Dersi was hit by three bullets when unknown gunmen opened fire from a car in front of his home. He died shortly after being taken to Benghazi medical centre, the official said, asking not to be named.

Mr Dersi was appointed shortly after an attack on the US consulate September 11 which cost the lives of US ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

He had occupied leading posts under the regime of Muammar Gaddafi, including anti-drugs chief, before joining the revolt against the former dictator when it started in February 2011.

Several recent assassinations in eastern Libya, mostly of police or army officers who served under Gaddafi, have been attributed to radical Islamists.

From the Associated Press:

TRIPOLI, Libya Libya’s deputy interior minister says gunmen assassinated the security chief of the eastern city of Benghazi overnight.

Omar al-Khadrawi says National Security Chief Col. Farag al-Dersi was shot dead while returning from work on Wednesday.

"Three men opened fire, killed him and then fled the scene," he said, adding that it was unclear who is behind the killing.

On Sept. 11, U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in an hours-long assault on the U.S. mission in Benghazi. Islamic extremists are believed to have been behind the attack.

The country’s second largest city has witnessed a series of assassinations and car bombs over the past months by unidentified assailants targeting mainly security officials who worked under the rule of ousted dictator Muammar Qaddafi.

This is the full extent of what is being reported. And it probably won’t bet much more coverage beyond this.

Of course, a cynical person might wonder which side wanted the security chief dead?

The …city has witnessed a series of assassinations and car bombs over the past months by unidentified assailants targeting mainly security officials.

almost sounds as if our American consulate could have needed additional security personnel in the area “over the past months.”

    someone should get on that.
    oh, wait……
