Berkeley Rejects Code Pink Gitmo Homes

From Fox News:

Berkeley Votes Against Offering Gitmo Detainees a New Home

February 16, 2011 | FoxNews.com

A Berkeley, Calif. resolution to roll out the welcome mat to freed Guantanamo Bay detainees was voted down in the last minutes of its City Council meeting Tuesday night.

The proposal was rejected by a 4-1 vote, with four council members abstaining.

The city, home to the hippie movement of the 1960s, was considering inviting “one or two” detainees to live in Berkeley once they were cleared of wrongdoing and released from the U.S. detention facility in Cuba.

The resolution also would have asked Congress to allow cleared Guantanamo detainees to resettle in the U.S

At least two other U.S. cities, including Amherst, Mass., have approved similar resolutions.

This Fox News article neglects to mention that it was a Code Pink member who petitioned the Berkeley city council to consider this resolution. And that she is offering her own house to these Gitmo darlings.

From an earlier Code Pink press release appearing in the Berkeley Daily Planet:

Berkeley City Council to Vote Today to Resettle Cleared Guantánamo Detainees in Berkeley

From Cynthia Papermaster, Code Pink
Tuesday February 15, 2011

Guantánamo detainees would be able to resettle in Berkeley, according to a resolution to be considered today by the Berkeley City Council.

The Resolution asks Congress to remove any legislative barriers to resettling cleared Guantánamo detainees in the U.S. and welcomes one or two of the detainees to live in Berkeley once they’re able to leave Guantánamo. Berkeley will become the third municipality in the United States and the first in California to do so. No city funds would be used to support the former detainees, who would be sponsored by community volunteers and organizations that help torture victims and refugees.

"I’d offer a room in my house to one of the men," said Cynthia Papermaster, Berkeley resident and who heads Berkeley No More Guantanamos. She asked the Berkeley Peace and Justice Commission to bring the measure to the Council. The commission did so on December 6

Papermaster [said], “It is past time these men were given their freedom and allowed to rebuild their lives. This is a humane gesture and the least we can do to lessen their suffering… I’m going to offer a room in my house to one of the men."

Apparently, some women will do anything to get a date.

Careful there, Cynthia. It sounds to me as though you’re about to lose your head. Although the loss would appear to be of little consequence in your case as all you apparently use it for is a rectal suppository.

And just exactly what is the “Berkeley Peace and Justice Commission” anyway? Something out of a Cheech and Chong routine?

And then you read to see 4-1. Bad on Fox for making it seem like it was a close call. This called for stronger words, something like “The Berkeley, Calif. resolution to roll out the welcome mat to freed Guantanamo Bay detainees has been swiftly pulled out from under their feet. An overwhelming 4-1 vote made swift work of this resolution, which was brought up near the end of council meeting. Four council members abstained from the vote, none of whom would answer our calls for questions.”

And you’ll also note four abstentions. Why, pray tell? Could it be that they preferred not to have their fingerprints on a “yes” vote for fear of losing credibility with the nation? Or….preferred not to have their fingerprints on a “no” vote for fear of losing credibility with their hippie friends? Such a conundrum. In short, “not going near that with a ten-foot pole” would be the most appropriate supposition.

    • TerryAnne says:

Yep. Especially since that’s 44% not voting. If this had been a liberal source, they’d have complained that it put the yes’ at an unfair advantage and that the obvious White Oppressors were trying to beat down the poor misunderstood terrorists from having a normal life. I mean, he didn’t really mean to set off that bomb, the chemicals just mixed themselves and he, in a trance from breathing their fumes, walked it over to where our troops were to be driving.

I say go ahead and let these liberal idiots have them shack up. When the women, kids and dogs are raped, I don’t want to hear a peep. And when they start blowing up parts of the cities that they no have unfettered access to, the person who offered the house gets arrested, too, even if Haji blew himself up or hightailed it to another American city to hide. :)

Berkley… unwilling to give aid and comfort to the enemy? It is a black day in the history of stupidity.
Even if whatever detainee they decided on taking was innocent of terrorism per se, what makes these wingnuts think he would WANT to live in Berkley? Strictly from a religious standpoint, wouldn’t their new neighbor be bound by religious doctrine to kill 95% of the neighborhood? They talk about these people like wayward puppies at the pound that need a home. The self indulgence and total cluelessness of the left never ceases to amaze and confound.

And thus, UT, you have struck rhetorical gold there. Truly the uber-enlightened in Broccoli, CA, are the know-all saviors of, not just the planet, but of mankind, or…humandkind…or personkind, I guess…not sure what the PC term is today. And they truly do believe that people are lost puppies and need to be ‘shown’ the way much as the way missionaries and detested born-againers do. They are no different than any other overzealous person or group, guided only by an ideological wet-dream. This is coupled with the delusion that they were somehow “successful” in the 60’s with their peace, love and dope method, being only 1/3 correct. The dope movement was successful for both the drug cartels and the education system, liberally using both meanings of the word here.

And, to further your statement, sure, they put them up in their home, then in less than 24 hours Accchhhhhmed has flown the coupe and disappeared for parts unknown, looking to further their jeee haawd. Writing on the wall here. Not rocket science…etc., etc. But….fools rush in.

I would say this is a good thing, that even Berkeley politicians, who are crazier than the average Berkeley voter, do not want Club Gitmo to release into their community.

But I’ll still bet a Berkeley council vote to demand the Government to close Gitmo would be 9-0 in favor.

So they are still crazy, but at least they are not nuts.

Why the surprise? I lived and worked in Berkeley from 1983-85 and believe me, unless things have shifted dramatically since then, those jihadis can’t hate America any more than the local Berkleyites do. The Bay Area has a beautiful climate, lovely landscape, good looking people, delicious Anchor Steam porter, nice museums, bookstores and concert venues – its Paradise, except that everyone there is …crazy as a bedbug.

    • untrainable says:

Artboy, I think you missed the memo about the new tone. I think you should apologize for insulting bedbugs everywhere. [sarc] No bedbug has ever been as crazy as those Birkenstock wearin’, tree huggin’ dirt worshipers. The fact that one of them dreamed up this idea and thought it was a good one proves that they refuse to realize that dirt worshiping tree huggers will be the first to be killed by the new order… ok maybe after they kill all gays… and Christians… or ???

Hm. This was a recipe for irony.

I have a morbid curiosity to see how it would’ve turned out.

    • artboyusa says:

Well, tranquil, since you ask, maybe it went like this…MEDUSA “COOKIE” GORGONBERG, Code Pink Activist, stars in “The Homecoming”!

“And this is your new home!” trilled Medusa “Cookie” Gorgonberg, Code Pink Activist, flinging wide the screen door. “Welcome!”

Abu the Terrorist stood uncertainly on the threshold of Medusa’s modest house, just around the corner from bustling Telegraph Avenue. He shuffled his sandal clad feet and mumbled quietly into his beard.

“What’s the matter, Abu? Are you overcome with emotion at being at long last free from that sun bleached Cuban death hole and safe from those American war pigs in the generous, welcoming arms of progressive America? Is that it? Well, don’t you worry; no more waterboarding for you, you brave freedom fighter you!”

Abu mumbled and shuffled a little more.

“Oh, I get it!” exclaimed Medusa. “It’s the culture shock, isn’t it? Yes, I know it will be a difficult adjustment –at first Berkeley must seem very different to your distant homeland, different indeed to just about anywhere, but don’t worry – you’ll soon fit right in”.

Abu did his mumbling, shuffling thing once more.

“No, its true! No one here works, they sit around drinking coffee all day, they all smoke kif and they all hate Satan America, just like you. True, your personal hygiene is better than most Berklonians but you’ll soon get used to not washing. Or shaving. Just look at me!”

Medusa flashed her tufted armpits in Abu’s direction and he quickly covered his eyes, as though he’d looked directly into the sun. He mumbled some more and Medusa strained to catch his words.

“What…is that…animal?” whispered Abu, pointing to the agitated little ball of fur that bustled around Medusa’s feet.

“Oh, that’s just Miss Dandelion! She’s my beautiful, beautiful baby!” Medusa scooped up the wriggling, snivelling, yipping little Shih Tzu and held her up in Abu’s face. “Isn’t she just gorgeous? Don’t you just love her? Who’s my beautiful girl? Who’s my beautiful girl? Yes you are! Yes you are! Look, Abu – she wants to give you a kiss!”

Abu gave a little yelp of horror and he took off running down the street, looking for someone, anyone, to re-arrest and save him.

What a riot. The Marxist-Feminist and the Islamist, sitcom gold. I can imagine the Lifetime channel blaring in the background of mid-afternoon prayers.

You’ve definately called that one. Thanks for the laughs, my friend.

  7. Tater Salad says:

Bill Ayers should have been up there in Berkely protesting this vote. Or………Maybe he and his ole’ Lady, Bernadine could volunteer to take-in a couple of these fine “gentlemen” in Gitmo into their own residence. If they don’t take a couple of these “gentlemen” into their house it would make them “Hypocrites” one would think!
