Biden: Bloomberg Inflated 9/11 Trial Cost

From the New York Daily News:

Vice President Joe Biden rips Mayor Bloomberg for inflating cost of 9/11 terror trials in Manhattan

Vice President Biden stunned New York officials on Sunday by accusing Mayor Bloomberg of inflating the cost of 9/11 terror trials in Manhattan.

"The mayor came along and said the cost for providing security to hold this trial is X hundreds of millions of dollars, which I think is much more than would be needed," Biden told CBS’ "Face the Nation."

Bloomberg angered the White House last month by reversing his earlier stance and opposing the trial of alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed in New York.

He declined to respond to Biden’s rebuke Sunday, as did Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, but a city official said the Obama administration had never questioned the city’s security estimate of more than $200 million per year. President Obama even asked Congress for $200 million to secure the trial – but that was before objections from officials in New York and elsewhere grew to a roar.

Now Congress seems reluctant to approve those funds – or any to pay for civilian trials. "The elected officials, Democrat and Republican, said, ‘We don’t want this tried here in New York,’" Biden said. "That creates a political dimension to this."

Some in Congress have signaled that they’ll only release funds if trials are held before military tribunals – an idea that Biden said was becoming a real possibility.

Although Biden said Attorney General Eric Holder initially made "the right decision" to try Mohammed in Manhattan Federal Court, he went further than any other Obama administration official in saying military trials are more likely…

City officials have bristled at suggestions that their cost estimates are too high.

"You don’t skimp on security in New York City, and we’re not going to," Deputy Mayor Ed Skyler told a Citizens Budget Commission forum this month.

City Councilman Peter Vallone (D-Queens) said Biden’s out of his league when it comes to security. "Our police commissioner is perhaps one of the world’s foremost experts on public safety, and Joe Biden treads on dangerous waters when he believes he knows more about the safety of New York City," Vallone said.

Is there any subject where Mr. Biden would not be out of his league?

Excluding general buffoonery, that is.

(Mr. Biden makes his outrageous claim about Mr. Bloomberg at about 9:15 in the above clip.)

What is Bloomberg today – an R, D, I or has he gone over the edge and become a G? Anyway I think it is rich that Biden is accusing him of inflating the 9/11 trial cost, since we know (from historical proof) that Ds always deflate and hedge all costs – just to get any vote/approval needed and just blame the last R Administration (or local R official) for any and all cost ‘over-rides’.

Personally, since the one guy had already plead guilty in the military tribunal – anything other than the sentencing hearing – is absolutely unnecessary expense and a waste of taxpayer funds – be they local or federal.

    This is funny!
Anything coming out of the Self-Inflated and Over-Inflated Joe (the Gaffmeister) Biden’s mouth is suspect as history shows him to be consistently mistaken or outright lying.

At least his boss is more often a liar, not just mistaken.

    What a dilemna.

A liar interviewed by a liar calls a liar a liar, and is called a liar by another liar.

And I was hoping for an easy day.

I think Biden can take Bloomberg two out of three.

Bloomberg is kinda short and …. nebbish. And you know how easy they are to roll.

(good grief, this stuff would be comedy gold on

(cont.) Saturday Night Live, but in terms of National Security these guys are Moe Curly and Larry rolled into one giant Marx Brothers movie.

  6. Petronius says:

To the Liberal mind $200M will always be too much to spend on security.

But a Liberal won’t think twice about spending that much on a junket to Copenhagen, or to study the life cycle of the San Francisco swamp mouse.

    Dueling blowhards.

Is it not possible for our government to do ANYTHING cheap or efficient? You can’t just try him at a military base or some distant island somewhere? No, no, no, we must have it in Manhatten, the most crowded, congested place in America.
How much money does it cost for an exploding neck bracelet, so that if he is whisked or runs away, it can be detonated. Cost: $500.

And besides, if anyone has ever paid attention to the Palestinian strategy, you will note that they prefer to take other people hostage to bargain for someone who is beyond their reach. So if you can have the right security to keep all 6,000,000,000 people from being taken hostage in this world, or be harmed, then you have truly beaten terrorism.
