Biden Threatens Ukraine President With Sanctions

From the Agence France Presse:

Biden threatens Ukraine’s Yanukovych with sanctions

February 20, 2014

Washington (AFP) – Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday warned Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych that the United States was ready to impose sanctions on officials guilty of ordering troops to fire on protesters.

Biden spoke to the Ukrainian leader by telephone and "made clear that the United States is prepared to sanction those officials responsible for the violence," the White House said in a statement…

The White House statement said Biden called upon Yanukovych to "immediately pull back all security forces — police, snipers, military and paramilitary units, and irregular forces.

"The Vice President urged President Yanukovych to take immediate and tangible steps to work with the opposition on a path forward that addresses the legitimate aspirations of the Ukrainian people." …

Funny, but Obama isn’t willing to do work with his opposition. But that’s perfectly okay.

Because of the missed deadlines, Syria has submitted a new 100-day timeframe that sees all its chemicals removed from the country by the last week of May, a source close to the matter told AFP…

By Adam Kredo | February 18, 2014

The White House says that it will not interfere with Iran’s rising oil sales, despite a recent uptick that experts say is providing Tehran with billions in revenue.

Exports of Iranian crude oil jumped to 1.32 million barrels in January, up from December’s high of 1.06 million barrels, according to data from the International Energy Agency.

While the increase caused concern among some experts who worry that economic sanctions on Iran are collapsing, the White House appeared unfazed by the latest export data and promised to continue pausing its efforts to reduce these sales…

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Monday urged the country’s oil sector [to] increase its output, according to regional reports.

It’s clear: when Obama threatens sanctions, the world trembles.
