Bin Laden’s Family Gets 45 Days, $110 Fines

From the Agence France-Presse:

Pakistan court orders bin Laden widows deported

April 2, 2012

A Pakistani court on Monday sentenced Osama bin Laden’s three widows and two of his daughters to 45 days detention for illegal residency and ordered their deportation as soon as possible.

Their lawyer Muhammad Aamir said the period of detention began on March 3, when they were formally arrested on charges of illegal entry and residency in Pakistan and that they would continue to be held at their villa in Islamabad.

So they have already served all but 14 days of their sentence.

"The interior secretary has been directed to arrange their deportation," Aamir told reporters outside the home in the capital, where the Al-Qaeda leader’s widows are living and which officials have declared a "sub jail".

"I think it will be completed probably in two weeks," he added.

Zakarya Ahmad Abd al-Fattah, the Yemeni brother of bin Laden’s youngest and reputedly favourite wife, Amal, confirmed the sentence and said the judge had also imposed a fine of 10,000 rupees ($110) each, as a precursor to repatriation

45 days detention and $110 fine? That is pretty stiff penalty for staying in a country for ten years illegally.

Imagine if we did that in our country. Imagine even if we did that to Mr. Obama’s illegal alien relatives.

HARIPUR(PAKISTAN): It’s an ornate but not lavish two-story house tucked away at the end of a mud clogged street. This is where Pakistan’s intelligence agency believes Osama bin Laden lived for nearly a year until he moved into the villa in which he was eventually killed.

The residence in the frontier town of Haripur was one of five safe houses used by the slain al-Qaida leader while on the run in Pakistan according to information revealed by his youngest wife, who has been detained.

“There was no smoking gun. We didn’t find anything,” he said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the contents of the Abbottabad house.

    WASHINGTON _

    American missiles soon rained down.

As the pace quickens and the targets expand, however, the distinction may be blurring between operations targeting militants who want to attack Americans and those aimed at fighters seeking to overthrow the Yemeni government.

U.S. officials insist that they will not be drawn into a civil war and that they do not intend to put ground troops in Yemen other than trainers and small special operations units.

“We don’t want to become involved in the country’s internal battles,” an Obama administration official said. “We don’t want to turn every anti-government fighter against the United States.”

…, and it also became dangerous for American personnel to be in the country.

U.S. officials said both attacks were carried out either by the military’s U.S. Joint Special Operations Command or the CIA, each of which fly armed drones over Yemen.

The militants were targeted not because they were plotting attacks against the U.S. but because intelligence suggested they were planning attacks on American diplomats or other targets inside Yemen, the U.S officials said.

The CIA began flying drones over Yemen last year, joining a clandestine military program that was already up and running.

Heavily armed American soldiers have begun appearing in large numbers at the Sheraton Hotel in the capital, Sana, a Yemeni official said.
