"only 20% of the mormon population ever practiced polygamy"

I'm not trying to hijack this thread like a Somali pirate but here goes...

"There are many misconceptions as to what caused and fueled the American Civil War. Slavery was indeed one of them. However, less than 20% of the Southern population owned African Americans"-

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_many_southerners_owned_slaves_in_1860

" In 1854 the first Republican party platform inveighed against the “twin relics of barbarism” —slavery and polygamy—and after Congress passed the Merrill anti-Bigamy Act of 1862, Abraham Lincoln signed it into law. Believing that the revelations of God took precedence over laws of man, Mormons ignored it. Yet, the political pressure against polygamy increased throughout the century. Utah was still a territory and desperately seeking statehood so it could legalize polygamy; as it happened, polygamy was one of the central reasons Utah could not obtain statehood."-

http://www.signaturebookslibrary.org/essays/mormonpolygamy.htm

The LDS who were still down for the struggle went underground and schismed off into their own sect.

Some of my family came over from Scotland with the LDS and stopped short in Rock Springs, WY-moving on to homestead in central WY. This ain't my first ro-de-o.

Just saying.

It is disingenuous to intimate that Mormons went "down with the whole one man one woman marriage thing" because of Federal troops....only 20% of the mormon population ever practiced polygamy - hardly a widespread practice - and when it was declared illegal the mormons did (and still do) believe in upholding the law. I think there were threats of intervention over those who were already in polygamist relationships, and when those were allowed to remain intact, the issue pretty much went away.

How about this pinandpuller.
We have all the good people in California jump on a buss, (thats right, I said A buss)
We let the remaining nuts and fruits live under Shira law for a year with 3000 Palistinians as police.
After the year is up, we will see how many want to belong to the home of the brave again.

When the Mormons weren't down with the whole one man one woman marraige thing the Federals sent troops their way.

Can't we partition California or something? I've already been to Disneyland. Tommorowland didn't have anything about gays rioting.

Eilsel....thought you'd like this statistic, on the day the GAYSTAPO "closed" the LA Temple, 2000 ordinances were performed, essentially making it a very busy day. Basically all they did was lock everybody inside to continue doing what they were doing all day long. And don't worry, Guppy, we won't blink! There are countries that have not in fact recognized LDS temple marriages as valid civil unions (the UK, for example), and members are required to participate in a civil ceremony and then have their union "sealed" by what they deem proper priesthood authority in a temple. So the state can stuff it - we fight the fight because family units define society for the best, and words and definitions MATTER. If anyone doesn't think so, just look at what Clinton's re-definition of a baby did for late-term abortion....a baby became "a fetus that has been delivered and is determined to be viable." Gee, I wonder why we need BAIPA...

I still get worked up that the state makes any decisions about what is a religious issue. Marriage is, was and will be what it is in spite of these worms. They deny the nature of what a union is by looking at everything as relative to their own self-important thinking. If everything is relative then how can we possibly nail down the truth about anything.

I don't understand the appeal of the Mormon religion but every Mormon I've known was a good and decent person. My hope is that the LDS are stronger than my church was and fight these bastards back.

The Mormons had the nerve to vote, and they voted their consciences.
They had every right to do so, it will affect the Churches of every denomination because as soon as a law is passed allowing gay marriage, every turd burglar and carpet muncher in the state will insist on a church wedding, and Gods blessing.
The state will then insist that the Churches perform the ceremonies or face prosecution, completely ignoring constitutional law.
Even if the state refuses to force Churches into compliance, the perverts will sue the Churches and the courts will allow such suits to proceed.
Marriage is a religious and sacred bond recognised by every state in the union, changing the law would force the states to do just what the constitution forbids, interfere with personal beliefs!
There is no reason that California officials should be harassing the Church or Churches, this is simply intimidation.
The homosexuals are not content with civil unions that grant them the same tax breaks and benefits as married couples, they wish to force others to change their core religious beliefs to suit a perversion.
They can all go straight to hell as far as I am concerned.

What is this stuff about a "Ban on gay marriage"? As I understand it Prop 8 was defining a marriage as between a man and a woman. People don't let the left define this like they do in so many other areas. The always try to frame conservatives as wanting to ban something or they are anti something. This has got to stop.
And why isn't the homosexual community being investigate for vandalism and racial hate crimes? Oh wait the left doesn't hate or vandalize or stop free speech or...

This is mind-boggling. If the Mormons filed a similar complaint against this "Californians Against Hate" group, do you suppose it would be taken seriously?

What business does this group have in trying to control what the LDS church does?

"Merits further inquiry." Why? Where is the evidence of wrongdoing, except in the imaginations of these lunatics who are HARASSING the Mormons?

"Why is it MANDATORY that I accept their lifestyle "

because they cannot accept themselves and they hope that if everyone else does, the pain will go away

they would be better off to apply the wisest prayer of all to themselves: "Dear Lord, give me the strength to change the things I can, and the wisdom to accept the things I cannot."

Eisel: It's not actually mandatory (but I understand your point/frustration), but it is overwhelming that the point of departure for any discussion is that gay rights are normative.

In general, be sure that any person or group asking for equal rights has absolutely no interest in equality - they want preferential treatment and they want it now!

You know I once had a gay friend ask me when I was going to "give up the whole Mormon thing." (I joined with I was 18 and she wanted to go out drinking). I told her when she "gave up the who lesbian thing."

Why is it MANDATORY that I accept their lifestyle (which I did...I loved her the same before and after she came out of the closet) but I'm ridiculed for my beliefs which I keep to myself for the most part (I answer questions when asked). It okay for them to protest outside of and shut down the normal operations of the LDS temples (even vandalize some church buildings), but I can not even voice an opposing opinion about their lifestyle (much less protest it).

A hate crime is a hate crime is a hate crime. Why can these people not see that in their own actions?

This article is too vague. What do the AP mean by the Mormon church's "role"? I'm particularly concerned about whether they refer to a role that groups outside of California took in the Yes on 8 process.
