Think of the money California (and the entire United States) could save if the U.S.–Mexico border was secure and California wasn’t so tied up in giving services to illegal aliens and their families. Plenty of California’s tax dollars go right into maintaining that populations’ health care and education. I’m not even going to mention anchor babies …

I think if they function just as well without the extra day – they should lay people off and do what the private sector does – lean !

We had a case locally where a woman worked for the local city – she also ran her OWN PRIVATE BUSINESS out of the city office- for something like 7 years – they cut her pay and hours based on the premise that if she could run a business and work her job it obviously did not warrent a full time position with full time benefits. She was a democrat and predictably the union fought for her – but in the end she was bumped down to part-time and they just recently put her job up for bid. I heard rumors that the reason the union dropped the fight is the city threatened to file charges against the woman – in my opinion they should have prosecuted her because to me stealing time is the same as stealing money not to mention she was probably utilizing our tax-dollar paid for equipment.

Hopefully, like in so many other ways, California is at the beginning of a nationwide trend.

Of course we would like to see this extended to as many days off as possible for as many as possible.

Be careful what you wish for.
The province of Ontario tried somethng similar to this in the early ’90’s. There, those forced unpaid days off extended all the way down to the municipal level and were known derisively as “Rae days”, after the province’s socialist premier Bob Rae.
What I remember most about those days was the police force I was working for -already short-handed and straining under budget cuts- now having to work even more short-handed. One memorable day, I had a sergeant (actually an acting sergeant) and 5 constables at my disposal to police an area with over 150,000 residents (our bare, safe, minimum manpower requirement was 22 officers).
The hospitals weren’t much better shape.

Liberals have some damned peculiar ideas about what’s “critical”.

Maryland is following the trend. We went from a surplus to a projected $2 billion deficit since (D) O’Mally took office. The state is laying off workers and forcing furlough days on the rest. Of course we don’t make national headlines because our governor is a liberal democrat.

Why not have those highly overpaid, no talented, self-centered, liberal hacks known as entertainers in Hollywood fork over ten percent of their annual incomes? That should be more than enough to put the state of California back in the black.

Interesting.

One has to ask why, if it’s possible to run the government with a 10% decrease in effort, why the good people have been paying that 10% for decades.
