Chafee Wants Ad Boycott Of Talk Radio

RI Gov. Chafee: Stop paying for vitriolic commentary

When talk radio hosts use harshly divisive language, "The advertisers should shut them down," Governor Lincoln Chafee said this morning.

Chafee said the solution to the vitriolic rhetoric — which some have linked to the shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords over the weekend — is for people to stop paying for it, including not buying books from people who use such language.

The law has a term for this kind of thing. It is called ‘tortious interference.’ And, as the lawyers say, it is ‘actionable.’

You cannot interfere with someone’s business, even if you are a governor. Some would say, especially if you are a governor.

And speaking of which, it is also probably highly problematic to have a government official calling for censorship. This would at the very least appear to be the ‘prior restraint’ of free speech.

Chafee made his comments in response to reporters’ questions after a meeting on health care. He noted that he had been a target of violence-tinged criticism himself. In 2006, conservative commentator Ann Coulter wrote a column, "They shot the wrong Lincoln," and calling then-Senator Chafee a "half-wit."

He is clearly a half wit – and a humorless one at that.

Chafee made national news earlier this week when he announced that he would not go on talk radio and would ban state employees from doing so.

This ban is probably also illegal. But when has Lincoln Chaffee ever worried about the law?

The ban came because talk radio is essentially "ratings-driven, for-profit programming" that was not appropriate use of state employees’ time, Chafee said.

Mr. Chafee did not include NPR in his ban, since they are not politically biased.

His spokesman said it had been in the works long before the shooting in Arizona.

As have so many of the Democrats’ little projects. They were just waiting to be dusted off when the right opportunity arose.

When Ann Coulter called missing Linc Chaffee a half-wit, she was being generous.

California appears to have narrowly escaped the dubious distinction of electing the worst governor.

As always, the socialists will tell us who they most fear. Thus, this dim bulb has just told major corporations where to spend their advertising dollars. He will singlehandedly be responsible for doubling Rush’s salary.

“when has Lincoln Chaffee ever worried about the law?”

or any leftist who has the power to do so, notably, little lenin.

Because, after all, it takes years to legislate an unconstitutional law out of existance, by which time the subversion is probably complete.

I have already boycotted the MSM news except an occasional visit to CNN to confirm their slanted coverage.

“The advertisers should shut them down.”

Doesn’t the governor realize that his own comments are vitriolic. His words “shut them down” might be taken literally by some nut case and result in violence. Why is it that these hypocrites never practice what they preach? Either they believe their own words and are deliberately targeting the right for violence with their incendiary comments, or they are intentionally lying to smear their political opponents. It’s either one or the other.

  6. tranquil.night says:

They are so pathetically desperate to use the shooting to shut us down and retake control of the political discourse.

Who knows what’ll happen next if they don’t right?

Political discourse they are propagating for their own use.
Keep a ‘beer eye’ on these crustaceans.

  7. BillK says:

Because no state official should ever involve themselves in anything that could be conceived to be “for profit.”

unless they own the new refridgerator/freezer with the specially designed VERY hard to find cash compartment…
