Chavez Has Cancer, Was Diagnosed By Fidel

From a deeply concerned Associated Press:

Chavez reveals he is fighting cancer after surgery

CARACAS, Venezuela – Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez revealed that he is fighting cancer after having a tumor removed in Cuba, raising uncertainty about his political future even as he assured his country he expects to fully recover.

And never mind that his administration blamed previous reports about his ill health on a right wing conspiracy. (See below.)

Chavez was noticeably thinner and paler as he appeared on television Thursday night, reading from a prepared speech with a serious and at times sad expression. He said he is resolved to "be victorious in this new battle that life has placed before us."

Chavez said he had two operations in Cuba, including one that removed a tumor in which there were "cancerous cells." The 56-year-old president said the surgery was performed after an initial operation nearly three weeks ago to remove a pelvic abscess.

Chavez said the tumor was in the pelvic region but didn’t say exactly where or what type of cancer was involved. He said he is continuing to receive treatment in Cuba but did not elaborate

Is it wrong to be glad he is receiving medical care in Cuba?

His appearance came after days of anxious speculation among Venezuelans about Chavez’s health. State television on Tuesday had shown photos and video of Chavez chatting animatedly with Fidel Castro, but officials had been vague about the reasons for Chavez’s continued seclusion in Cuba

Chavez supporters gathered in Plaza Bolivar in downtown Caracas late Thursday chanting before television cameras: "Chavez, friend, the people are with you!"

And that was just the news media.

Chavez said his first surgery took place June 11 for a "strange formation in the pelvic region that required an emergency operation due to the imminent risk of a generalized infection."

He said when he arrived in Cuba after visits to Brazil and Ecuador, he had intended to have a simple checkup for a knee injury that had forced him to use a cane in recent weeks. But he said Castro had questioned him "like a doctor" and that tests confirmed the need for urgent surgery

Is there nothing Fidel can’t do? In fact, we will probably learn that he performed the surgery.

After that initial operation, Chavez said, doctors began to suspect other problems, and Castro gave him the news of the tumor. A series of tests "confirmed the presence of an abscessed tumor with the presence of cancerous cells, which made necessary a second operation that allowed for the complete extraction of the tumor," Chavez said…

Finishing his speech Thursday, Chavez recited a revolutionary slogan often used by Castro: "Forever onward toward victory! We will be victorious!" Before finishing, he added: "Until my return!"

Nevertheless, we suspect Mr. Chavez will soon be smelling sulfur. And for real this time.

After his appearance, some of his closest allies went on state television. National Assembly president Fernando Soto Rojas, who days earlier had denied rumors that Chavez was diagnosed with cancer, said the president is in good hands in Cuba

Just imagine having a government that would lie to you like that.

For the record, here is just one example of the denials coming from Venezuela last week, via Reuters:

Venezuela tells foes "stop dreaming" of Chavez death

By Daniel Wallis | Sun, Jun 26, 2011

CARACAS (Reuters) – Senior allies of Venezuela’s socialist President Hugo Chavez have dismissed reports he is sicker than the government has admitted, telling his enemies to "stop dreaming" of his death.

The normally verbose leader has not been seen in public since a June 10 operation in Cuba to remove a pelvic swelling. His long absence has prompted widespread speculation he may be seriously ill, possibly being treated for prostate cancer.

His government insists Chavez is fine but says he won’t return to Venezuela until he is ready. And it has accused his opponents of "rubbing their hands together" in glee.

"President Chavez is recovering well from his surgery. His enemies should stop dreaming and his friends should stop worrying," Vice Foreign Minister Temir Porras said on the social networking site Twitter late on Saturday. "The only thing that has metastasized is the cancer of the Miami Herald and the rest of the right-wing press."

Vice President Elias Jaua said Chavez would return soon. "The national and international right-wing are going crazy, rubbing their hands together … even talking about the death of the president," he said in a speech, adding that Chavez’s rivals were exposing themselves as anti-democratic fascists

For some odd reason we are cast back to the salad days of the Clintons, and their accusations of vast rightwing conspiracies.

So Hugo the Hamster goes to Comrade Fidel for a “knee examination” and ends up being told he’s got an abscess and malignant lump in his butt. And this all just happens to go down right as less than a couple dozen Cuban’s are participating in the first annual Gay Pride Parade.

    Just observations.

Just like going to the VA Hospital for a hang nail but have a testicle removed.
Now if we could get Fido to talk Hugo into a lobotomy.

I hope Hugo leaves this world writhing and screaming in pain!!

Most likely his cancer is the result of breathing brimstone fumes at the U.N.

Chavez and all who think like like him are cancer.

    • Petronius says:

Since Hugo Chávez took power in 1999, the rule of law has broken down in Venezuela and criminals operate with complete impunity. Venezuela has overtaken Columbia as South America’s murder capital. Venezuela’s murder rate is more than eleven times greater than that in the USA.

    • Evil does manifest itself in many ways.

Cancer in this case is merely the completion of a cycle.

Will make a wish send Chavez to Obama land, where they can both eat the beating hearts of capitalists.

Who could imagine such a thing…

  9. Rusty Shackleford says:

You know, I’ve seen people die from cancer. The way the body withers, becomes so weak and so frail and the weight loss can be alarming, to say the least. The ongoing suffering from chemo-therapy, the radiation treatments, the cure is almost worse than the disease but it’s the best we have.

Imagine if Venezuela had a free-market system and that they had decided to build and staff the premier cancer research center in the world. Anyone who had heard of cancer would know about the Venezuelan Cancer Research Center. And over the years, they made leaps and bounds in curing the disease….with money coming in from those who got treatment as well as from those who thought what they were doing was monumentally important. The best minds, the best cancer physicians in the world would meet there every year to discuss groundbreaking research and ideas that had merit.

You know, for every victim who suffers from cancer, my heart goes out to them. It is a horrible experience but many more are recovering and having their cancer go into remission thanks to the research and ability of a free-market system to afford such things. But I can only feel badly for those who lose the fight.

For Chavez…..not so much. But it is rather curious that he went to Cuba for help. Hypocritical, in fact. It’s always ironic when a dictator becomes a victim of their own policies, and he is all of that. His own lack of caring for the sick and warping his own nation’s economy into a totalitarian state has resulted in his own demise. I’m actually surprised that he didn’t contact the US and get flown into one of our top cancer facilities. But, such is the mind of a socialist. But, given that Hambone and he were BFF and all, I kinda figured Hambone would put him up in Sinai at the taxpayers’ expense. All on the QT of course. After all, if you can’t come to your fellow socialist for help, who can you come to?
