Chicago To Consider A Five Cent Tax On Bullets

From an unquestioning Associated Press:

Official proposes bullet tax to curb Chicago crime

By DON BABWIN | Thurs October 18, 2012

CHICAGO (AP) — As Chicago struggles to quell gang violence that has contributed to a jump in homicides, a top elected official wants to tax the sale of every bullet and firearm — an effort even she acknowledges could spark a legal challenge.

What an excellent idea. Make it even more expensive for honest citizens to defend themselves from criminals.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle [sic] will submit a budget proposal Thursday that calls for a tax of a nickel for each bullet and $25 for each firearm sold in the nation’s second-largest county, which encompasses Chicago.

Of course, that is just the starting bid. Once they get this tax in place it will skyrocket.

Preckwinkle’s office estimates the tax will generate about $1 million a year, money that would be used for various county services including medical care for gunshot victims. Law enforcement officials would not have to pay the tax, but the office said it would apply to 40 federally licensed gun dealers in the county.

Through last week, the city reported 409 homicides this year compared to 324 during the same period in 2011… [O]fficials say gang violence was largely to blame for a rash of shootings earlier this year…

How many gang members are going to buy their weapons at a federally licensed gun shop that will be paying this tax?

This is just another way to punish law abiding gun owners. In fact, it makes them pay for the medical services provided the criminals who prey on them.

Richard Pearson, the executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, scoffs at such talk, saying the tax wouldn’t do anything to address gang violence but would harm local businesses and law-abiding citizens.

"If she wants to get to the people causing all the problems she ought to put a tax on street gangs," he said…

Racist.

Fred Lutger, the owner of Freddie Bear Sport in that suburban Chicago community… [said], "Why should [we] be paying for gang bangers shooting each other? You’re taxing law-abiding citizens for what criminals are doing."

Mr. Lutger sounds very naïve. He is living in the past, and thinking of a land that has ceased to exist.

Perhaps the esteemed Toni Preckwinkle would consider an abortion tax to help cut down on abortion related deaths.

Like the gangbangers are buying their guns and ammo in Crook–I mean, Cook County in the first place, or paying taxes on anything…..

I know, let’s tax all bullets at the rate of $1,000 each! That will end gun crime!

But no effective stratgey to reveal how Obama Rahm and the Chicago mafia are connected to the drug war in Mexico, the same war being waged in Cicago

If I only had five cents for every wasted round. The “tax” should be on NOT, hitting the bad guy. Ten rounds, ten bad guys. Ten rounds and only two bad guys,,,,,Well, pay up sucker! Life isn’t fair. If Bad guys can shoot-up Home’s, School’s and Car’s, with no training. Think of what we can do with a “tax” break, and some training.
The end of crime as we know it!
