China Wants Terrorists Returned Home

From a conflicted Associated Press:

China rejects move to send detainees to Palau

Thu Jun 11

BEIJING – Beijing said Thursday that the 17 Chinese Muslims the United States is sending to Pacific island nation of Palau are terrorists and should be handed back to China instead.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said the United States should "stop handing over terrorist suspects to any third country, so as to expatriate them to China at an early date."

Palau President Johnson Toribiong said earlier in the week that Palau had agreed to a U.S. request to temporarily resettle the detainees, who were captured in Afghanistan and Pakistan in 2001 but later determined by the Pentagon to not be enemy combatants after being detained in Guantanamo Bay.

"China also opposes any country taking any of these terrorist suspects," Qin said. He did not say if China would take any action in response to the U.S. move…

Palau does not have diplomatic relations with China, which may make it harder for Beijing to pressure Palau. Instead, it has ties with Taiwan.

A former U.S. trust territory in the Pacific, Palau has retained close ties with the United States since independence in 1994 and is entitled to U.S. protection under an accord.

This must be a tough call for the Associated Press. — Their terrorist allies versus their Communist allies.

In any case, we don’t think the Chi-Coms want these Uighurs back so that they can give them computers and internet training.

The Chinese seem to have a different approach to dealing with terrorists.

  Update!

From a delighted Associated Press:

4 Chinese Muslims freed from Guantanamo to Bermuda

By DEVLIN BARRETT and MATTHEW LEE Associated Press
June 11, 2009

WASHINGTON — Four Guantanamo Bay detainees have been released and resettled in Bermuda, U.S. officials said Thursday.

The four are part of a group of 17 Chinese Muslims who have been in legal limbo at the military detention center in Cuba.

Abdul Nasser, one of the four detainees who landed in Bermuda early Thursday morning, issued a statement through his lawyers, saying: "Growing up under communism we always dreamed of living in peace and working in free society like this one. Today you have let freedom ring." …

The Justice Department on Thursday issued a statement thanking the government of Bermuda for helping resettle four of the detainees. Arrangements are being made for other Uighurs to be sent to the Pacific island nation of Palau.

The Uighurs’ lawyers said they will be part of Bermuda’s guest worker program.

U.S. officials did not say what restrictions, if any, would be placed on the Uighurs as they are resettled in Bermuda…

One U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss negotiations between the two nations, said the four would not be allowed to travel to the United States without prior approval from American authorities

Albania accepted five Uighurs from Guantanamo in 2006, but declined to take more. Many nations have said no to receiving the Uighurs, out of concerns that doing so would anger the Chinese government…

Bermuda.

How we wish we could afford to live in Bermuda.

Maybe we’re in the wrong line of work.

One U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss negotiations between the two nations, said the four would not be allowed to travel to the United States without prior approval from American authorities.

Whew.

We feel safer already.

Sounds fantastic to me – ship them home.

Chances are pretty slim that they would become a problem again, as you have pointed out China has a far different approach.

Citizens of Bermuda should be thrilled.

I’ve been to Bermuda several times. The entire country is the size of a small city with a total population of 50,000. It’s literally the kind of place where everyone knows everyone else or at the very least they share a common friend.

Four Chinese guys are going to stick out like a sore thumb on Bermuda.

There’s a joke in there somewhere….a really funny joke.

“These four Chinese guys walk into a bar in Bermuda…..”

    That’s sounds about right.

But the AP can resolve its conundrum by using The Moron’s approach to everything:
acknowledge the legitimacy of the concerns of both parties……and then act in the worst interests of the US.

      LOL

So….um…is there any other country in the world that will allow me to wage war on them in the name of my religion….and will respond with:

    free computer training
free television (that I can destroy if I get offended at a woman’s bare arms)
free meals that conform to my religious dietary requirements
free (my) religious book from gloved non-believers
free relocation and release on a nicely populated tropical island
free relocation and release in a Wahhabi supremacist anti-terror program in Saudi Arabia where 1 in 7 of my friends will return to terrorism
    and…
keep me out of countries (China) that might torture me

Really wracking my brain here….I can’t think of any other country that treats its prisoners of war this way.
