CIA Wants End To Leaks – WaPo Laughs

From a highly concerned about protecting national security secrets Associated Press:

Panetta to employees: Keep a lid on it

By Kimberly Dozier, AP Intelligence Writer Wed May 18, 2011

WASHINGTON – CIA director Leon Panetta is warning his employees that leakers will be investigated and possibly prosecuted after a flurry of reports in the media about the technology and methods used to track and ultimately kill Osama bin Laden.

Mr. Panetta should talk. It seems to us that he has been one of the biggest blabbermouths in all of this.

In a memo obtained by The Associated Press, Panetta told staff Wednesday that the disclosure of classified information to anyone not cleared for it — reporters, friends, colleagues in other agencies or former CIA officers — can endanger lives.

For crying out loud. The CIA can’t even keep its internal memos about leaking secrets – secret.

The warning follows media reports that the CIA operated a safe house, as well as new stealth drone technology reported by The Washington Post, to spy on bin Laden’s Pakistani hideout

Meanwhile, from the Washington Post, which proudly carried the above AP story, we have yesterday’s leak:

CIA flew stealth drones into Pakistan to monitor bin Laden house

By Greg Miller, Published: May 17, 2011

The CIA employed sophisticated new stealth drone aircraft to fly dozens of secret missions deep into Pakistani airspace and monitor the compound where Osama bin Laden was killed, current and former U.S. officials said.

Using unmanned planes designed to evade radar detection and operate at high altitudes, the agency conducted clandestine flights over the compound for months before the May 2 assault in an effort to capture high-resolution video that satellites could not provide.

The aircraft allowed the CIA to glide undetected beyond the boundaries that Pakistan has long imposed on other U.S. drones, including the Predators and Reapers that routinely carry out strikes against militants near the border with Afghanistan.

The agency turned to the new stealth aircraft “because they needed to see more about what was going on” than other surveillance platforms allowed, said a former U.S. official familiar with the details of the operation. “It’s not like you can just park a Predator overhead — the Pakistanis would know,” added the former official, who, like others interviewed, spoke on the condition of anonymity, citing the sensitivity of the program

This "former official" should be a "current inmate" in a prison somewhere.

The new drones represent a major advance in the capabilities of remotely piloted planes, which have been the signature American weapon against terrorist groups since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

In 2009, the Air Force acknowledged the existence of a stealth drone, a Lockheed Martin model known as the RQ-170 Sentinel, two years after it was spotted at an airfield in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The aircraft bears the distinct, bat-winged shape of larger stealth warplanes. The operational use of the drones has never been described by official sources

The stealth drones were used on the night of the raid, providing imagery that President Obama and members of his national security team appear in photographs to have been watching as U.S. Navy SEALs descended on the compound shortly after 1 a.m. in Pakistan.

Behold yet another version of that now famous photo.

The drones are also equipped to eavesdrop on electronic transmissions, enabling U.S. officials to monitor the Pakistani response.

The use of one of the aircraft on the night of the raid was reported by the National Journal’s Marc Ambinder, who said in a tweet May 2 that an “RQ-170 drone [was] overhead.”

Oh, well, if it was just a "tweet" than it is okay.

In a fact sheet released by the Air Force, the RQ-170 is described as a “low observable unmanned aircraft system,” meaning that it was designed to hide the signatures that make ordinary aircraft detectable by radar and other means. The sheet provides no other technical details…

But as soon as the Washington Post (or the New York Times) gets them, we will hear all about them.

Unlike the Predator — a cigar-shaped aircraft with distinct wings and a tail — the RQ-170 looks like more like a boomerang, with few sharp angles or protruding pieces to spot

So if you see something like that, Mohammed, be sure to shoot it down.

U.S. officials said the drones wouldn’t have needed to be directly over the target to capture high-resolution video, because they are equipped with cameras that can gaze at steep angles in all directions. “It’s all geometry and slant ranges,” said a former senior defense intelligence official

That’s good to know. Especially if you are a potential target.

Perhaps now that the New York Times is behind a paywall, the Washington Post feels like they must lead the way in helping our terrorist enemies.

I don’t know why they didn’t just show a picture of the stealth drone.
They damn sure drew it for them. Sheesh!!

  2. Rusty Shackleford says:

Google, “RQ-170, photos” and they have hundreds of photos of it. I’d post a link but I haven’t mastered the “tiny url” thingy yet.

What’s important though, of course is that security is paramount and this administration likes to say, “We’re gonna get ya, and this is how we’re gonna do it; Here’s the time, the place and the number of people, how they’re armed and anything else we can think of..”

Perhaps this is what they meant by “transparency”.

I recall that while on active duty, if there was even a hint that someone had discussed classified info with people who didn’t have a need to know, the person who did it was sent to the woodshed. It didn’t happen often as most of us keyed right in on the term “jailtime”.

Seems that this administration likes to play games where the opposition wins. And their loose-lipped approach to terrorism tells me that the OBL raid had nothing to do with Obama or his minions and was planned without him knowing anything about it. Otherwise, he would have been flapping his gums about the “upcoming operation” to any/all in the white house newsroom.

And, given the glowing credit he is receiving from the state-controlled media, it confirms he knew nothing about it.

Like I said when this began, too many
people doing too much talking about it.

That’s why Gen’l Grant kicked all the
newspaper folk out of his army during
    the War Between the States.

  4. proreason says:

It’s only fair that the people who live to kill us have our secrets.

Look at how America has destroyed the world; cars, planes, factories, telecommunications, fattening foods, motion pictures, tv, women who think they are people not chattel, financial systems, money.

Our evil ways have to be stopped.

  5. P. Aaron says:

The CIA should spy on the Post. Or, just start firing & prosecuting the bored bureaucrats within thier agency

  6. tranquil.night says:

It’s Scooter Libby taking his vengeance.

  7. Right of the People says:

I wasn’t aware that the CIA had “embedded” reporters just like they had during the Gulf Wars. Panetta probably briefs the press before Spike to get their reaction to see if he wants to tell the boy king something.

Do you think Spike CC:’s everything to Saif al-Adel and his chief of staff Mustafa al-Yemeni? Wouldn’t want his buds in Al Qaeda having to guess what we’re doing next.

I’m with you Rusty, this is further proof Spike didn’t have a clue what was going on until they drug him kicking and screaming off the golf course.

  8. canary says:

How come all the news of CIA Director Leon Panetta was to replace Gates who was retiring, and Petraeus taking his place ended the day OBL was killed and fed to the fishes in the deep blue sea?
I’m still stunned Obama picked Panetta for anything.

  9. yadayada says:

it’s not just this administration- – it’s hard lefties throughout gubmint. remember when they ‘leaked’ that CIA was tracking terrorist cell phone calls?
they despise our military, intelligence services, and our way of life.
