Clinton Lost Nuclear Codes While in Office

From a bemused ABC News:

President Bill Clinton Lost Nuclear Codes While in Office, New Book Claims

Former Chairman of Joint Chiefs Says Nuclear ‘Biscuit’ Went Missing for Months

Oct. 20, 2010

When you’re President of the United States, you can lose a vote, you can lose popular support, and you can lose a round of golf. But you’re never, ever supposed to lose the biscuit.

That’s what they call the card the president is meant to keep close at hand, bearing the codes that he has to have in order to launch a nuclear attack. And for several months during the Clinton administration, a former top military officer says they lost the biscuit.

Gen. Hugh Shelton, who served under Clinton as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, tells the story in his just-published memoir, "Without Hesitation: The Odyssey of an American Warrior."

"At one point during the Clinton administration," Shelton writes, "the codes were actually missing for months. […] That’s a big deal — a gargantuan deal."

Shelton claims the story has never been released before, but Ret. Air Force Lt. Col Robert Patterson told a very similar account in his own book, published seven years ago.

Patterson was one of the men who carried the football, and he says it was literally the morning after the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke that he made a routine request of the president to present the card so that he could swap it out for an updated version.

"He thought he just placed them upstairs," Patterson recalled. "We called upstairs, we started a search around the White House for the codes, and he finally confessed that he in fact misplaced them. He couldn’t recall when he had last seen them."

In Patterson’s telling of the story, the President lost the biscuit in 1998, but according to Shelton, the card went missing in 2000.

Did they check Monica’s blue dress? The Oval Office humidor?

Still, this is a good story to keep in mind as we watch Mr. Clinton get paraded around as an example of a responsible Democrat President.

He eventually found them in his pant’s pocket that was around his ankles.

    So what’s the big deal?

I’ve done some little faux pas myself when the blood was rushing from my head to support other body functions. Some of them have cost me a lot of money and other trouble.

It’s these little human frailties that make us all love Bubba so much, isn’t it?

I’ve always said my objection of Clinton wasn’t his policies as much as his reckless disregard of the consequences. I believe this story has already been told in the books “Dereliction of Duty” by Lt Col. Buzz Paterson

and former secret service agent assigned to the White House under BJC, Gary Aldrich’s book “Unlimited Access”.

But like Rush says, He cared, he really cared & that makes all the difference.

The nuclear coeds turned up in the same white house closet where those missing Rose Law firm billing records were found.

Another ‘Vast’ right wing conspiracy…no doubt.

      “The nuclear coeds”
I’m sure they were some hot babes and Bubba approved.

I thought that a responsible adult (meaning someone in a military uniform) carried the ‘football’ – oh the lies and deception in DC – no wonder we are in such trouble.

Oh damn, my bad – I forgot that the Dems don’t like having military people around – Personally I think Patterson should have gone to the conservative media and let it be known then that Clinton wouldn’t let the military carry the ‘football’ – maybe we wouldn’t have had the second term – nor the Monica – bimbo eruption.

The president has a laminated card with the “master keys” for lack of a better word to the stuff in the football. To give the order to launch he has to use his card in conjunction with the codes in the football for verification in case someone were to steal the football. That way, even if they had the information in the football without the president’s codes it is essentially worthless.

But you’re right, he probably thought it was useless and just tossed it on his dresser instead of carrying it.
