Clinton neighbor held in NY killing

By JIM FITZGERALD, Associated Press Writer

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – A disbarred lawyer who is a neighbor of Bill and Hillary Clinton was being held on $1 million bail Friday after being charged in the shooting death of his wife.

Chappaqua resident Carlos Perez-Olivo was indicted Thursday on one count of second-degree murder and two counts of illegal weapon possession. If convicted on all counts, Perez-Olivo, 59, would face up to life in prison…

Perez-Olivo was arrested Thursday at his home on Old House Lane, three doors down from the Dutch Colonial the Clintons bought in 1999.

Prosecutor Perry Perrone called the killing “a cold-blooded, well-planned execution” and said there was “a compelling circumstantial case, a compelling forensic case” against Perez-Olivo.

“All investigative roads led to one person and one person only,” Perrone said in Westchester County Court, where the indictment of Perez-Olivo was unsealed Thursday.

Buckley said Perez-Olivo “maintains his innocence, as he has all along.” Outside court Thursday, Buckley said his client had enemies and believes the shooting “was aimed at him.”

Perez-Olivo had told police that he and his wife, Peggy Perez-Olivo, were accosted while driving home from an evening in Manhattan on Nov. 18, 2006. They were on Route 100 in Millwood, a road not that would normally be part of their route home. Perez-Olivo told police they had detoured to find a gas station.

He said that despite his own wound, he was able to drive to Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco after the shooting.

Peggy Perez-Olivo, a teacher’s assistant at a Chappaqua school, died two days later. She was 55.

Perez-Olivo said he did not recognize the gunman, but he described him in detail. Police issued a sketch, asked the public for help and said they would look into some of Perez-Olivo’s former clients…

Perez-Olivo had been disbarred for refusing to return unearned funds to clients, and jurors have accused him of incompetence in defending a murder suspect. He has tried to collect on his wife’s life insurance, but insurance companies balked because he had not been ruled out as a suspect.

Carlos Perez-Olivo is held back after lunging at a reporter who had asked him if he had killed his wife.

What is it about the Clintons?
