Clinton: Obama Would Have Carried Our Bags

From The Weekly Standard:

Bill Clinton on Obama: ‘A Few Years Ago, This Guy Would Have Been Carrying Our Bags’

By DANIEL HALPER | Sunday Sept 2, 2012

Former President Bill Clinton tried to get former senator Ted Kennedy to endorse Hillary Clinton for president in the 2008 election by describing Barack Obama this way: "A few years ago, this guy would have been carrying our bags."

This anecdote is revealed in a New Yorker article on the relationship between Bill Clinton and Obama:

Tim Russert told me that, according to his sources, Bill Clinton, in an effort to secure an endorsement for Hillary from Ted Kennedy, said to Kennedy, “A few years ago, this guy would have been carrying our bags.”

(Here is a link to the New Yorker article.)

To be fair, we doubt that any one person could carry all of Bill Clinton’s and Ted Kennedy’s baggage.

But this New Yorker piece substantiates the earlier quote from the book, ‘Game Change,’ by John Heliemann and Mark Halperin. The two authors claimed that Bill Clinton called Ted Kennedy the day after Obama the Iowa primary.

‘He phoned Kennedy and pressed for an endorsement, making the case for his wife. But Bill then went on, belittling Obama in a manner that deeply offended Kennedy,’ they wrote. ‘Recounting the conversation later to a friend, Teddy fumed that Clinton had said, ‘A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee.’

And Bill didn’t stop there. After Kennedy endorsed Obama, the authors claimed that Clinton griped, “the only reason you are endorsing him is because he’s black. Let’s just be clear.” — Which also sounds a little racist to our ears.

Naturally, this revelation from ‘Game Change’ got very little press at the time from our one party media guardians. Just as this latest reiteration will be studiously ignored. In fact, over the weekend, the author of the New Yorker article, Ryan Lizza, did his best to walk back his own quote.

From NewsBusters:

New Yorker’s Lizza: Nothing Racial About Clinton’s ‘Obama Would Have Been Carrying Our Bags’

By Mark Finkelstein | Monday Sept 03, 2012

… Appearing on CNN this morning, Lizza assured host Soledad O’Brien that "I don’t think it’s racial. I don’t think Bill Clinton has a racist bone in his body."

[I]n introducing the issue, O’Brien leads with the more benign explanation of Clinton’s comment, suggesting he was simply commenting on Obama’s relatively young age, before mentioning that others found it to be "racial." …

Perhaps she was also hinting that Clinton might be getting a little senile. Like his aides have done in the past to cover for his accidental honesty.

RYAN LIZZA: [In 2008] the Obama campaign ran essentially a character attack on Hillary Clinton. It wasn’t just a policy attack–it was a character attack. And so there were some real, real hard feelings that these two camps had to get over once Obama won.

SOLEDAD O’BRIEN: You talk about, I guess where President Clinton said "a couple of years ago, he’d be carrying our bags." And some people said that was just a comment about the age of President Obama and lack of experience, others said, that’s a racial comment.

LIZZA: I don’t think it’s racial. I don’t think Bill Clinton has a racist bone in his body…

No, Bill Clinton doesn’t have "a racist bone in his body." Just like he doesn’t have a sexist bone, either. Except maybe that one.

But, lest we forget, that isn’t what the Obama campaign said back in 2008. Their "character attack on Hillary" included Bill, whom they tried to paint as a racist. Which is why Bill had to undertake his ‘apology tour’ of black churches. So where the Obama people lying or is Mr. Lizza misinformed?

Also, notice that by today’s media standards, mentioning the word ‘Chicago,’ or the ‘PGA,’ or ‘golf’ or ‘anger" can get you tagged as a racist. But saying that “Obama would have been carrying our bags” is obviously just a harmless reference to Obama’s “age.’

Meanwhile, black people are told Republicans are racist because of their use of code words and dog whistles. And yet when a Democrat makes a blatantly racist remark it means nothing.

Also, notice how the news media somehow ‘know’ that Bill Clinton didn’t mean it to be racist, so it’s okay. Just like they ‘know’ that Republicans only ‘showcased”/ minorities at their convention in order to hide their true racism.

It is amazing the things they know.

This is BS! We all know carrying bags is hard work! No way Obama would ever attempt such a thing!

Maybe he was referring to ‘nickel bags’ for ol’ Teddy and Willie……or bags of ‘vote buyin’ money bags……..or foreign-national’s- illegal-campaign-contribution-money’ bags.

Or maybe just the two old bags those hapless critters happened to marry.

Americans have been carrying Obama’s baggage and it’s getting heavier.

Obama wrote as Senator that he should not have to pick up ant-killer for his wife and children’s home on the way to his home. He complained he was likely the only Senator that had to do this. This says a lot.
Except they had the same full time cook that’s in the WH now, before paying off their college loans.
And an in home babysitter before that until Michelle’s grandma quit her job to babysit.

I guess Obama thought it best for his wife to cook the ants and serve them for dinner, but they were fast food eaters and that experience is why the Obama’s are regulating what America eats while they drink beer and eat pizza.
