Clintons’ Sludge Ruins Obamas’ Garden

We almost missed this howler, perhaps because it was discreetly buried in AOL’s Daily Finance site:

Michelle Obama’s toxic veggie nightmare: White House organic garden polluted with sludge

Alex Salkever
Jul 30th 2009

When First Lady Michelle Obama planted an organic vegetable garden on the White House lawn in March 2009, she hoped to both set an example of healthy eating and to grow tasty edibles for her daughters and husband. But Michelle’s organic dream has been dashed by a nasty toxic legacy lurking in the soils of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. It turns out that a previous Presidential gardening team had used sewage sludge for fertilizer.

This is a fairly common practice with one huge problem. Sewage sludge tends to be laced with anything that people pour down the drain and often contains heavy metals. Not surprisingly, the National Park Service tested the dirt beneath Michelle’s garden and found the plot has highly elevated levels of lead averaging 93 parts per million. That’s below the 400 ppm that the Environmental Protection Agency says is a threat to human health. But I’d wager that Sasha, Malia and Barack won’t be getting arugula or tomatoes from this garden any time soon.

The likely source of the toxic sludge that has ruined Michelle’s garden? The Clinton White House apparently used a sludge-based product to fertilize the lawn during the 1990s! Aside from casting a shadow on the first White House vegetable garden since Eleanor Roosevelt resided there, the sludge ensures that Michelle’s garden will never attain organic status. Organic certification processes strictly prohibit the use of sludge as a fertilizer substitute.

The White House has sought to downplay the issue, and a number of experts have pointed out that 93 ppm of sludge in soil is somewhat normal for older urban locales. However, the EPA recommends not growing food in soil that has 100 ppm. Several major food producers, including H.J. Heinz and Del Monte, won’t accept produce grown in sludge. That’s despite decades of U.S. government efforts to encourage farmers to use solid sewage wastes in lieu of traditional fertilizer products.

What a surprise it is to see that it’s the Clintons who are to blame?

Did you ever think you would hear ‘the Clintons’ and ‘sludge’ mentioned in the same sentence?

    Sludge in the Garden
    by Mike Krumboltz

New homes are full of questions and possibilities. What color to paint the walls? How to arrange the furniture? What to plant in the garden? The Obama family must have asked a lot of those same questions when they moved into the White House. However, the first lady’s dreams of growing an organic vegetable garden have been dragged down by a previous resident that refuses to leave: sludge.

Various sources within the Buzz are reporting that Michelle Obama’s “organic” garden has been besieged by icky goo in the ground. As a result, the veggies aren’t quite what the first lady had in mind. According to Daily Finance, the National Park Service tested the soil in the vegetable patch and found “highly elevated levels of lead” due to sewage used as fertilizer.

So the question is: Who to blame? While dumping sewage into the ground sounds like a crime worthy of Mr. Burns from “The Simpsons,” the actual perpetrators were none other than the Clintons. Yep, back when Bill and Hillary were living it up in the White House, their gardening team used “sewage sludge for fertilizer.” The fiends!

Funny how an environmentally friendly bunch like the Clinton/Gore administration would leave the White House lawn polluted.

As far as the “icky goo” left behind by the Clintons…no comment.

They’ll find a way to blame Bush.
“It was his fault for ‘ignoring’ environmental issues.”

The whole damn thing was stupid from the hop—not the idea of a veggie garden, per se, because those can be fun for kids, but the fact they called it “organic” from the very beginning. Anyone who knows anything about organic farming knows the ground/soil itself needs to be free of chemical for a certain number of years before it can be used as an organic farm. I believe the soil itself needs to be tested and certified …

I don’t even want to think where those White House groundskeepers got the toxic sludge… though I do quite like LD’s idea of the Clinton outhouse being the source.

Nothing preventing MO from “donating” her veggies to some homeless shelter/kitchen. Certainly those people won’t care about a little lead in their peas and carrots, right? (I keed, I keed!)

  3. catie says:

Well, I can’t help but find this funny and the Clinton’s did it too. Well, we all knew he was White Trash from the get go so go figure. But I agree, they’ll find a way to blame W.
You know, I’ve been planting a garden since I was a kid. Funny thing though, this Spring when I was getting some seeds and other supplies the dippy check out girl at Lowes asked if I was “inspired” by the Obummers do grow a garden. I told her I had been growing a garden since I was a kid and that has been as long as the Belle has been around since she’s 6 weeks older than I am. I told her I didn’t need no stinkin elites like the obama’s to tell me the benefits of a garden, my mother always reminds me that if they didn’t grow one during every summer of the depression they would have starved to death. Boy did she get huffy and some old timer a few people back said something to the effect of being sick of it suddenly being en vogue to grow a garden, what the hell did they think people have been doing for years.

  4. pianogirl88 says:

Well, BJ did move that double-wide from the WH to the site of his lie-brary in Little Rock, and now we find out what had been underneath it all along. And I must agree with Caligirl & Catie, the libs and the state-run media will find some way to blame this on “W” and Laura before too long.

Big Oil…don’t want to know any details about the “icky good”, and I think I’ll take a pass, LD, on the tomato sandwiches!

  6. curvyred says:

There are currently four “food safety” bills waiting Congress to push through, that will place disproportionate burden on small and organic farms, possibly even family gardens.

It seems like a pretty nice way to cry for more “environmental” oversight and regulation.

  7. canary says:

Rumors WH Plantation child slaves exposed to toxic sewage began reporting signs of illness; severity of symptoms of poisioning showed remarkable increase whenever trodding the Obama plantation fields. Medical treatment is lengthy and costly, to prevent later health issues that can appear years later in the children’s lives.

EPA’s “high” standards, will make civil suits against the WH difficult to win.
Possible child slaves can file suits against their parents who signed waivers for their children’s to perform farm work. Possibility the waivers included not holding the WH liable for injuries on the grounds.

EPA standards will not enforce the Federal government to fund or correct the problem such as any overhaul of soil. Any, correction to the sewer soil, will have to come from King and Queen Obama’s own pocket.
As far as the innocent child slaves, this will be a test of King and Queen Obama true compassion for health care, as treatment is costly and lengthy and paintakiing.

Liberals Demise “Damn hillbillies put their outhouse right in Mitchs’ garden!” Thank you for making me laugh.

calling. calling on Al Gore. How did he allow this to happen under his office.
This leads me all the more to believe they are given a budget. The rumors of Clinton renting the Lincolns room out to the stars like Barbara Striesand.

calling. calling PETA save the pooch.
Also, I don’t recommend hiring a company to smoke test the WH and check for any leakage in pipes in the home, around the home. That’s one big sprinkler sytem too.
Obama’s just need to suck it up, and think of our troops 24/7 conditions.

WASHINGTON – It was the ultimate photo op – 36 smiling fifth graders eating a healthful meal they’d cooked themselves at a picnic table in the first lady’s garden. The story line was as simple as it was seductive: They came. They planted. They harvested.

In three short months, Michelle Obama had accomplished what other food advocates could only dream about. Good food was no longer just virtuous. It was cool.

    That was easy. Now what?
That’s the question Obama’s food-policy team is working on this summer. The garden was intended “as a jumping-off point for getting to what sometimes can be a complicated conversation about how we eat [and] the food choices we make,” Obama policy director Jocelyn Frye said in an interview. But as it moves beyond the symbolic to those meatier matters, the White House is grappling with…

That isn’t so easy. Food – unlike, say, the space program – is a fundamental and intimate part of everyone’s life. It’s culturally, politically and economically complicated. And there’s a fine line between government involvement and paternalism: It’s one thing to educate people about the importance of a healthful diet and quite another to tell them what to eat and where to buy it. The garden has been an unqualified success; the challenge now is to capitalize on Obama’s newfound clout to improve school lunches and access to fresh fruits and vegetables – and to make how we eat an integral part of the national health-care debate.

The plan’s main architects are Obama; Frye, 45, her Harvard Law School classmate; and Sam Kass, 29, a White House assistant chef and food-initiative coordinator. Part of the East Wing strategy is to keep doing what they’re doing – make fresh, healthful food seem accessible, even normal.
Obama often makes a point of telling her own story……

To create that down-to-earth feeling, Obama has invited local schoolchildren, not celebrity chefs, to the garden. She also has appeared at soup kitchens and community health centers to talk about the importance of a healthful diet. Produce from the garden is donated to Miriam’s Kitchen, which feeds Washington’s homeless.

“Accessibility and affordability have always been part of the message,” Frye said. “It’s why we partner with elementary-school kids. You pierce through all the constituencies and say, ‘It’s about kids.’ ”

Pioneers of the local-food movement have long struggled with perceptions of elitism. Critics mocked their breathless praise of farmstead cheeses or the ultimate roast chicken, painting them as out-of-touch, arugula-loving yuppies.

“Michelle has used her position in a way that has made people realize this is a very simple, very American impulse,” said Josh Viertel, president of Slow Food USA, which promotes small farmers and artisan producers…
Obama hasn’t escaped criticism. In a recent op-ed column in the New York Times, food writer Amanda Hesser chided the first lady…

Frye and Kass counter that inspiring families to cook is part of the White House plan. Earlier this month, for example, Obama invited graduates of the Brainfood program, a Washington nonprofit that teaches life skills through cooking, to help prepare for a White House luau and the Fourth of July celebration. Nineteen students shucked corn, washed lettuce, and made strawberry tiramisu.

Kass also is working on a list of White House seasonal recipes that “is going to be a bigger part of what we do,” he said.

…at the White House isn’t doing is as significant as what it is. For example, the first lady has not championed local food. She has mentioned it – “If it’s fresh and grown locally, it’s probably going to taste better,” she said on the June harvest day – but focuses overall on freshness and seasonality.

… a key part of the White House strategy is to stay focused. ..working to change agricultural subsidies, environmental regulations, nutrition standards, and food labeling. The White House, Kass said,…Obama is highlighting the issues that most directly affect children:…” Kass said.

Obama….will relaunch her efforts in earnest in September….. when the debate will heat up in Congress over funding for child-nutrition programs,… Staffers say Obama will continue to try to link the personal to the political….

Obama complained about Michelle’s coldness towards him accusing him of not helping around the home and with the girls. He complained of her not having a cooked meal waiting for him. Doctor told her fast food was causing girls to gain wait. She doesn’t like to cook. It just means maids soaking and scrubbing vegatables for the queen.

  11. canary says:

WH and Obama’s knew high levels of lead harmful to children. Did the children or parents? .

Lead found in Michelle Obama’s White House vegetable
Suzanne Goldenberg, US environment correspondent guardian.co.uk, Thursday 2 July 2009

Instead, an embarrassed White House admitted today that the plot – whose lettuce, herbs and other produce have been consumed by the first family, visiting dignitaries, local school children and a women’s homeless shelter – had tested positive for elevated levels of lead.

However, it is advised for young children to be tested for exposure to lead if they play in areas where lead concentrations exceed 100 parts per million. The Environmental Protection Agency puts the threshold for dangerous lead levels at 300 parts per million.
.. the disclosure is awkward for a White House…

Children are especially vulnerable to exposure to lead, which can cause neurological and kidney damage, and stunt their growth.
Sam Kass, who followed the Obamas from Chicago as their personal chef, …

Katie McCormick Lelyveld, the first lady’s spokeswoman, said. A lead level of 92 parts per million is significantly better than the government standard for a garden like this…. and they’ll continue to do so,” Lelyveld said.

The White House would not say whether the Obamas or the children who had helped tend the garden would be tested for lead exposure.

Famous Organic Expert says excellent tested soil making Michelle’s garden better than his own. Claims “Secret” ingredient used.

Michelle Obama’s First Harvest Gets an A Plus
US NEWS June 20, 2009 By Paul Bedard

Future Farmers of America ought to adopt her as its organic and healthful eating spokeswoman….

Jim Crawford, a Pennsylvania organic farmer who supplies D.C. foodie faves like Restaurant Nora, .. whose New Morning Farm goods are on sale at two District farmers’ markets, advises Kass on the first lady’s garden.

In fact, says Crawford, ..garden in just a few short months has outshone some of his 40 acres of berries, herbs, and vegetables. Why? The soil. “The ground really seems to be nice and balanced,” Crawford says. After it was tested, natural ingredients like crab meal were added to adjust the pH, sulphur, and potassium levels. Then a secret ingredient from an organic fan arrived: compost from New York celebrity chef Dan Barber.

MACA’s complaint letter to Michelle Obama on her garden (agricultural farming) agenda

Sorry, to post so much, but thinking of worthless EPA, who would guess so many experts creating such a smoke-screen to implement Michelle as a farmer expert.
Shame on the Obama’s who were once lawyers, and the hypocrisy of pushing better health care.
One article said that it was 1100 square feet. Many build above gardens with healthy soil, and easier maintaining. They could have showed the children this method for future impoverished Americans who will grow gardens in small back yards. Stupid. Ignorant.
