Clinton To Grads: World Is Unsustainable

From a seemingly oblivious Associated Press:

Clinton to WVU grads: Face change with confidence

May 16, 2010

Today’s college graduates must face change with confidence in a "highly unstable, unequal and unsustainable” world and help others do the same, former President Bill Clinton said Sunday at West Virginia University.

Nothing gives bright and hopeful graduates confidence like being told by a former President that the world is “unsustainable.”

Also, isn’t it a bit inflammatory to be telling young people that the world is highly unequal?

In previous generations, Clinton said, young people needed only to get an education, land a job, pay taxes and vote intelligently to be a good citizen.

"Today, we also have to do what we can as private citizens to tackle public problems and advance the public good,” he told more than 1,000 graduates of WVU’s Eberly College of Arts and Sciences…

That’s right. Never before in history have Americans ever been expected “to tackle public problems” or “advance the public good.”

He urged them to embrace change and get in "the future business.” The 21st century is an exciting time to enter adulthood, he said.

"When I became president, believe it or not, there were only 50 sites on the entire World Wide Web. There’ve been more than that added since I started talking,” Clinton said. Mobile phones once weighed 5 pounds, and now "people with big hands have a hard time dialing numbers.”

But not everyone is in a position to take advantage of change, technological or otherwise.

Isn’t that a good thing? Aren’t the internet and mobile phones “distractions,” at least according to Mr. Obama?

"Change falls unevenly in our country and in our world and, for all of its benefits, the time you live in is highly unstable, and unequal and unsustainable,” he said.

From a financial crisis that triggered the Great Recession to incidents of domestic terrorism, Americans are exposed to dangers they hadn’t expected, Clinton said.

Which President required banks to make bad loans to people who couldn’t afford them? Which President allowed the incineration of women and children at Waco, which triggered a nut-job to commit the only ‘domestic terrorism’ that Mr. Clinton seems to be able to recall?

By the way, note the absence of any mention of non-domestic terrorism. Something Mr. Clinton continues to ignore, just as he did while President.

The nation’s thirst for energy is unquenched, and disasters still unfold in the race to supply it — including the April 5 explosion that killed 29 men in West Virginia’s Upper Big Branch coal mine and the massive oil spill now threatening the Gulf Coast.

Which political party has made it impossible to drill for oil or mine for minerals in places that are far more easy and far safer to reach?

Clinton, who received an honorary doctorate, said he donned his blue robe in the women’s locker room at the Coliseum

A requirement that was undoubtedly written into Mr. Clinton’s contract with the school.

Still, what an uplifting speech. It’s certainly nothing like what hears from those rabble-rousing fear mongers on rightwing talk radio.

Only government can save us from the horror.

Thank goodness we have a benevolent dictator to protect the 70% of black children born out of wedlock.
Thank goodness we have a genius to protect people who are losing their homes at 5% per year..
Thank goodness we hove a nuanced leader who will keep us safe when Iran gets nukes.
Thank goodness our anti-business champion will keep evil Wall Street from plunging us into a depression.
Thank goodness our head commissar will keep unemployment under 15%.

All of those horrors were brought to you by liberalism bushhitler, but we are in safe hands now.

2 Corinthians 4 – 1 Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we do not lose heart. 2 But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. 3 But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.

So … the nearer the end of this Age (aeon), of course it feels like the end of all things, the end of the world, The End …. to those who belong to this world.

    Clinton has self-identified.

As if we didn’t know already.

Clinton; lookin’ for that university that will give him a doctorate to replace that suspended Law License.

To a lawbreaker who’s been caught, the world is always ‘unfair’ or, it’s someone else’s fault.

  4. Right of the People says:

    To paraphrase Slick Willy:

“Well kids, the world’s a sh*thole, y’all might as well just apply for welfare now and let big daddy take care of y’all. Of course don’t forget to vote democrat. Remember that’s the one with the D next to their names if you can’t read the ballot.”

  5. Petronius says:

With so many public problems, with so much inequality, and so much that is unsustainable in the world, what is an idealistic young American to do? Where can he look for hope?

There should be a means for young progressives to track the strenuous efforts that Liberal leaders are making to inject more equality and sustainability into the universe.

Perhaps Apple might introduce a touch-pad icon into its iphones, one that we could use to get heart-warming updates from Liberals on the improvements they are making to the universe, the same way that we currently get time and weather information.

Thus (college student taps icon on iphone screen):

“Good afternoon. Here is the latest Good News for Progressives, brought to you as a public service by Liberal Death Watch with support provided by Bubba Enterprises, manufacturers of “Stain of the Union” brand spot remover, now in presidential strength.

    •  Today President Nerobama declared martial law in Arizona. Former Governor Jan Brewer has been taken into custody by U.S. Marshals.

    • The Federal Health Reform Commission denied applications by 40,000 senior citizens for life-saving medical tests or treatments. The combined value of their estates for Federal estate tax purposes is estimated to exceed $230 billion.

    • Justice Sonia “the shredder” Sotomayor issued the Supreme Court’s majority decision in the University of Michigan diversity case, stating tersely, “You’re finished blondie. Bye-bye blue eyes!”

    • The Department of Energy confiscated 400 oil rigs formerly operated in Louisiana and the Gulf of Mexico by BP, Chevron, Apache Oil, and other enemies of the state.

    • Eighty thousand Muslim immigrants were naturalized today, bringing the monthly total of new Muslim-American citizens and Democrat voters to 1.3 million.

    • In his weekly radio address to the nation, President Nerobama dissed the Chamber of Commerce, General Petraeus, bushhitler, the Constitution, the Pope, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He also reminded Senator John McCain: “I won. You lost. Get over it.”

    • Radio talk-show host Mark Levin’s secret underground bunker was discovered last night and has been destroyed by agents of the FBI and BATF. Mr. Levin is reported missing.

    • Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito is also reported missing.”

There now, isn’t that uplifting? Wouldn’t that warm the cockles of every young progressive’s heart?

…..”In previous generations, Clinton said, young people needed only to get an education, land a job, pay taxes and vote intelligently to be a good citizen……..

    So let’s analyze;

Today, you don’t get an education, you get a piece of paper that SAYS your educated but it really means no one has bruised your self-esteem.

Today, the job you’re qualified for pays minimum wage, and that’s the one you’re likely to land. The job your “Declaration of Education” says your qualified for is being done by somebody in Pakistan or India for a handful of rupees per month.

Today, you pay more in taxes on your minimum wage job than the job itself paid ten years ago. But you still have to pay ’em.

Today, you can still vote intelligently and be a good citizen. Or you can vote for a democrat. But you can’t do and be both. Unfortunately that “education” you just received hasn’t prepared you too well to make the choice.

So let’s review. Oooohhhh, this doesn’t look too good, since you’ve only qualified yourself to pay taxes.

Oh, well. One-out-of-four isn’t all that bad by today’s standards.

  7. Mithrandir says:

Clinton is still a raging liberal. The only reason he had a successful presidency, is because the public controlled him by electing a Republican Congress. Even still, he tried to ruin it with Monica Lewinsky, and Republicans held him accountable for that too.

  8. fallingpianos says:

“Today, we also have to do what we can as private citizens to tackle public problems and advance the public good,”

Gee, Mr. Disbarred, Impeached, Sex-Offender, Will-Do-Anything-To-Hustle-A-Buck-And-A-Dame disgrace of a former President, I wonder why you think this way? I mean, it CAN’T be because you and the rest of our public servants “citizens” actually create most of these public problems that the rest of us are forced to deal with. And of course, you and the rest of the super-geniuses in government NEVER burden us with any needless red tape. Yup, you’re always graciously stepping aside in order to let private citizens tackle public problems.

All sarcasm aside, thanks for admitting (even if you didn’t mean to) that government is not the solution. If only your fellow leftists would get the hint.
