Conservatives More Easily Disgusted

More laughable agenda driven junk science from LiveScience:

Conservatives Are More Easily Disgusted

By Robert Roy Britt

4 June 2009

People who squirm at the sight of bugs or are grossed out by blood and guts are more likely to be politically conservative, new studies find.

In particular, the squeamish are more apt to have conservative attitudes about gays and lesbians.

Lots of other research has tied politics to biology and behavior. Some quick background:

    * A study last year found that when people feel physically clean, they are less judgmental.
    * Another study found that political conservatives tend to be tidy, with organized offices, but liberals favor colorful, more stylish but cluttered spaces.
    * Political views are driven by religion, culture and even biology, other research has shown.
    * A large, global study in 2007 concluded that political preference is 50 percent genetic.

In one of the new studies, Cornell University psychology professor David Pizarro and colleagues surveyed 181 U.S. adults from politically mixed swing states. They used a Disgust Sensitivity Scale (DSS), which offers various scenarios to assess disgust sensitivity, as well as a political ideology scale. They found a correlation between being more easily disgusted and political conservatism.

Then they surveyed 91 Cornell undergraduates with the DSS, as well as with questions about their positions on issues including gay marriage, abortion, gun control, labor unions, tax cuts and affirmative action. Participants who rated higher in disgust sensitivity were more likely to oppose gay marriage and abortion, issues that are related to notions of morality or purity.

The results are detailed in the journal Cognition & Emotion.

In a separate study in the current issue of the journal Emotion, Pizarro and colleagues found a link between higher disgust sensitivity and disapproval of gays and lesbians. In this research, they used implicit measures, which assess attitudes people may be unwilling to report explicitly or that they may not even know they possess.

The studies were funded by the university.

Morals and disgust are intertwined. Research earlier this year found that people react similarly to disgusting photographs by curling the upper lip and wrinkling the nose. When judging behavior, our disgust can actually make us feel physically sick.

Pizarro explains that disgust is evolution’s way of protecting us from disease. Unfortunately, in his view, disgust is now used to make moral judgments.

Liberals and conservatives disagree about whether disgust has a valid place in making moral judgments, Pizarro argues. Some conservatives think there is inherent wisdom in repugnance, that feeling disgusted about something — gay sex between consenting adults, for example — is cause enough to judge it wrong or immoral, even lacking a concrete reason, Pizarro explains. Liberals tend to disagree, and are more likely to base judgments on whether an action or a thing causes actual harm, he said.

Studying the link between disgust and moral judgment could help explain the strong differences in people’s moral opinions, Pizarro figures. And it could offer strategies for persuading some to change their views.

"People have pointed out for a long time that a lot of our moral values seem driven by emotion, and in particular, disgust appears to be one of those emotions that seems to be recruited for moral judgments," Pizarro said.

An interesting related aside to chew on: Research published in 2007 in the Journal of Applied Psychology found that people who think of themselves as having high moral standards often become the worst cheats because they pursue what they believe to be a moral end at all cost.

Should not the headline have been: ‘Liberals Not Easily Disgusted’?

Which would have gone a long way to understanding their politics.

Contrary to the contention of the article, it may not be a bad thing to still be able to feel disgust at disgusting things:

Pizarro explains that disgust is evolution’s way of protecting us from disease. Unfortunately, in his view, disgust is now used to make moral judgments.

Surely, even evolutionists should agree that we must have the impulse for some good reason.

Why shouldn’t it be employed in the choices we make in our morals and politics?

Do we really want disgusting politics? Disgusting laws? Disgusting programs?

Disgusting politicians?

    Cornell: well no shock there.

Give a pansy liberal a deer to gut and see who becomes “squirmish”

    • Liberals Demise says:

Where in the “HELL” do you find a Conservative at Cornell?

bottom photo: Looksy where Barneys’ hand is on that young lad ….. now I’M disgusted!!

    • man.. stole the proverbial thunder.. My first thought when I read “People who squirm at the sight of bugs or are grossed out by blood and guts are more likely to be politically conservative, new studies find.” was about hunting..

  2. proreason says:

“Unfortunately, in his (Pizarro’s) view, disgust is now used to make moral judgments.”

Unfortunately, in my view, Pizarro is a pervert.

“People who squirm at the sight of bugs or are grossed out by blood and guts are more likely to be politically conservative, new studies find”

Of course! Bugs or bloody guts bear a striking similarity to the libtards and their way of life. (Barney Frank)

“In a separate study in the current issue of the journal Emotion, Pizarro and colleagues found a link between higher disgust sensitivity and disapproval of gays and lesbians.”

Of course… The behavior of gays and lesbians disgust me highly

  4. tranquil.night says:

Don’t forget that it was barely a month ago that our friends at LiveScience couldn’t help but admit also that Conservatives are happier, healthier, and more rational people than Liberals even though this apparently has nothing to do with choice and everything to do with chance: http://www.livescience.com/health/080507-liberal-conservative.html

But aside from apparently being lucky enough to “justify .. inequality” we’re probably only happy because we just enjoy being so disgusted, right?

  5. David says:

I am surprised that someone wasted money funding this research. The practice of desensitization has been ongoing in public schools for some time to promote the liberal agenda. For example locally, a principal was forced to remove a display that included an “transgender” person. For some reasons parents threatened to remove their 1st graders when the kiddo’s teachers were required to take kids up to these displays and explain what they mean. The story.
Liberals have been applying this theory to pervert the public education system for years hoping to influence the political future of the US.

  6. Colonel1961 says:

Hey, why is Barney Frank grabbin’ that kid’s ass?

  7. JannyMae says:

This is what qualifies as science? Pizzaro’s “opinion” is just that, and he obviously “interpreted” the results of this “study” to affirm his opinion.

  8. Celina says:

I wonder how much disgust these people register at the idea of child pornography, bestiality, necrophilia. Seriously, I have to wonder. And I mean, how much are they disgusted by it versus how much they show others they are disgusted by it.

    • jobeth says:

Tsk, tsk..now Celina.. let’s not be judgemental……those are only “alternative” life styles” We must all show acceptance and understanding. (MAJOR sarc)

  9. MinnesotaRush says:

    My re-write would say:

“Conservatives More Easily Disgusted – Libs Are the Most Disgusting”!

  10. CIV says:

“Liberals… are more likely to base judgments on whether an action or a thing causes actual harm, he said.”

So why aren’t they disgusted by abortion? It causes actual harm. I’m confused…

    • neocon mom says:

I have a liberal acquaintance who used to volunteer at the abortion clinic. Her job was to immediately examine the discarded fetus and inventory the parts, because they usually didn’t come out intact.
She took her proud “lack of disgust” (I think it’s better named insensitivity) and put it to work for the highest liberal cause.

    • caligirl9 says:

Um, I’ a nurse and I’ve seen some pretty nasty things but I could not do that … it was hard enough to fish through tissue from a natural miscarriage and find recognizable things.

  11. platypus says:

First I was cynical. As I got older, I was amused.

Now in the Uh-blah-blah Dynasty, I am disgusted.

  12. neocon mom says:

So liberals like huntin’, fishin’ and sign up for the military in droves, eh? Do they squeal and ask someone else to bait the hook?
Sorry, not buying that conclusion. Besides, Conservatives are happier and healthier and also give more of their time and money to charity. Sounds like whatever we’re doing is working okay.
But this is where I not only disagree, I take umbrage:
“Unfortunately, in his view, disgust is now used to make moral judgments.”

    1. Homosexuality has been viewed as morally wrong by every major world religion. It is not until recently that a minority of people associated with religion (ie the Episcopal Church of the U.S.A.) decided to throw away Christian doctrine and declare that homosexuality is not a sin and that’s just a misprint that appears in the Bible a few times (alas, we’re sooo much wiser now than we used to be.). So if disgust is only now used to make moral judgments, what was then used to make moral judgments?

    2. There are plenty of things outside of homosexuality which disgust people that are also morally wrong (bestiality, incest to name a few.) Which came first, the disgust or the moral wrongness? Or could it just possibly be that there is some prescribed order to the universe (you can read all about it in the Bible).

  13. Move_Zig says:

I keep saying that it’s not phobia… it’s good, old fashioned disgust.

BTW that expression “Homophobia” was coined by a homosexual psychologist and activist back in the 1970’s as a psycho-babble term to throw in the faces of those, well, expressing disgust.

    for great justice

    • proreason says:

Move_zig, I’ve been meaning to say something about the term “Homophobia”. Glad you did so.

And aren’t libwits great at playing with the language to forward their agenda?

Next we’ll be hearing about”Youth freedom advocates” instead of “Child Molestors”, and “genetic optimization” instead of “genocide”.

And I don’t think any of it is by chance. The first thing they do is establish the vocabulary intended to control peoples thinking on the subject.

Fortunately, we have the opportunity to do the same. For example, Pro-life may be the most important asset the movement has. It’s so much more powerful than Pro-choice and creates a start contrast between the two sides of the issue.

Obamy’s puppet-masters’ are also masters at selecting terminology for his teleprompter.

  14. bronzeprofessor says:

Liberals love evolutionary science, so I’d think they’d find conservatives more in tune with nature, since disgust seems like a useful trait for survival of the fittest. Why doesn’t our “disgust” function make us better environmentalists in liberal eyes — we are using the instincts given us by nature and not letting synthetic, non-renewable impulses get in our way.

  15. Move_Zig says:

    Pro,

    Absolutely.

Still figuring out the posting format you guys use here, but here’s the relevant quote:

HOMOPHOBIA – Psychologist and gay activist George Weinberg coined the term homophobia in his 1972 book Society and the Healthy Homosexual,[6] published one year before the American Psychiatric Association voted to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders.

Weinberg’s term became an important tool for gay and lesbian activists, advocates, and their allies.

The link the quote is from is here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homophobia

And you are also right about how the Homosexuals’ ultimate target is children.
    Please see the links:

Propagandize Homosexuality, Ban Religion, Legalize Pedophilia (at)
    http://sayanythingblog.com/readers/entry/propagandize_homosexuality_ban_religion_legalize_pedophilia

    and

    Homosexual’s Primary Target – Children

    The Homosexual Movement And Pedophilia

The homosexual activist movement and organized pedophiles are linked together by a common goal: To gain access to children for seduction into homosexuality.

Homosexual activists deny that they target children for seduction into the homosexual lifestyle, but the evidence is overwhelming that this is a lie.

There is an ever-increasing effort among homosexual organizations to target public school children, to abolish age of consent laws, and to publish “studies” that purportedly show that adult/child sex is not harmful.
