Conway: Deadline Gives Taliban Sustenance

From the Wall Street Journal:

Conway: U.S. Withdrawal Deadline Boosts Taliban in Afghan War

August 24, 2010

The top U.S. Marine general made a sharp departure from the White House’s talking points on Afghanistan, saying President Barack Obama’s promised July 2011 deadline to start withdrawing troops from the country had given “sustenance” to the Taliban.

“We know the president was talking to several audiences at the same time when he made his comments on July 2011,” Gen. James Conway told reporters on Tuesday. “In some ways, we think right now it’s probably giving our enemy sustenance….In fact, we’ve intercepted communications that say, ‘Hey, you know, we only have to hold out for so long.’”

Of course this is the undeniable truth. But it is also far more damning than anything that was said by the ‘Runaway’ General McChrystal or any of his loose lipped aides.

Conway, who recently returned from a trip to the region, was quick to qualify his remarks. He referred back to a statement made earlier in the press conference, saying that he expected Marines to remain on the ground in southern Afghanistan, the traditional stronghold for the Taliban, well after July 2011. “If you accept what I offered earlier as true, that Marines will be there … after the middle of 2011, what’s the enemy going to say then, you know?” he said.

This is not much of a ‘walk back,’ since it puts the lie to Mr. Obama’s assurances about us being out of Afghanistan by that time, for all intents and purposes.

The general’s blunt appraisal – that Afghan security forces are not likely to be ready to take the lead in a year’s time – is not a surprise. But timing of the troop drawdown is a contentious political issue. When Obama announced a surge of 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan in December, he said the transfer of forces in mid-2011 would depend on conditions on the ground, including the ability of Afghan security forces to take over responsibility for security.

Conway said, “I honestly think it will be a few years before conditions on the ground are such that turnover will be possible for us.”

Again, this is not quite in line with the Obama’s administration’s talking points.

The White House and Pentagon declined to comment

The commandant is slated for retirement this fall.

Which certainly may account for this rare and commendable burst of candor.

General James Conway carries 4 stars on his collar and is the Commandant
of the Marine Corps (GOD). Because General Conway is a gentleman (by act of Congress), one must read between the lines. He just told the houseboy that he signaled our enemy and gave them the date of their victory.

Two high ranking Generals of courage and honor b–ch slapping the poser in the WH in so many months………brings a smile to my face.

dingleBarry is waaaaaaay out of his paygrade and over his afro.

Oblamer is all about timetables, and only timetables. Timing is everything when your main goal it to be re-elected. The conditions on the ground are just unnecessary facts that continue to get in his way. But you can’t give the entire world to the taliban all at once. You have to do it in stages… Right Barry?

Can anyone out there think of a single example of the exaulted one deciding to do something, then changing his mind because the reality of the situation proved him wrong? Other than throwing even more money, that we have to borrow, at something that isn’t working and by virtue of facts never will? Anybody?? Is this thing on??? Helloooo?

Uh-Oh! Time for a “Joe-the-Plummer” investigation of this guy, he is challenging authority!

    ~Check his child support records
    ~Scrutinize his tax returns.
    ~Open his ‘sealed’ divorce records.
~HECK maybe even accuse him of rape from an annonymous source!

That is just what we can expect from a corrupt government….

…..”Oblamer is all about timetables, and only timetables……”

And Guantanamo is closed up tighter than a drumskin, too. Right?! Sadly, hardly anybody listens to this liar any more, and the ones that to get ignored.

As for Conway, go back over his, and several other Marines’ comments over the last couple of years and you’ll see a pattern of cautiously speaking the truth while having to curb their public commentary and appearing to remain neutral in deference to the ‘commander-in-chief’.

Conway will retire with four stars on his shoulders, befitting a capable and loyal Marine and true patriot. Obama will fade into the background with an asterisk next to his name.

    Oooh-rah General, and Semper Fidelis!
