Conyers Rejects Plea Deal – Guess Party

From a discreet Detroit Free Press:

Conyers offered deal in bribery probe

June 17, 2009

Federal prosecutors have offered Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers a plea deal as part of their wide-ranging investigation of City Hall corruption, but she has not accepted it, the Free Press learned Tuesday.

The development comes one day after the U.S. Attorney’s Office revealed that two key figures in a sludge-disposal deal admitted paying Conyers thousands of dollars in bribes to secure her support for a $1.2-billion city contract with Synagro Technologies. Conyers, who initially opposed the 2007 deal, switched her position as the council voted 5-4 to let Synagro dispose of wastewater sludge.

A source familiar with the inquiry said federal investigators also are talking to Conyers about investments by Detroit’s public pension funds. Conyers is a former trustee for the city’s general retirement fund.

Several people familiar with the talks spoke with the Free Press but asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of ongoing negotiations.

Conyers declined to comment.

One source said the prosecutors offered her ex-aide, Sam Riddle, a deal if he would plead guilty to bribery and tax evasion.

Riddle said: "I won’t discuss the elements of any offers … but a bad deal is no deal."

And now we have this further development, from a similarly discreet Associated Press:

Ex-Detroit council aide says ‘no’ to US probe plea

June 17, 2009

DETROIT — A political consultant and former aide to Detroit Councilwoman Monica Conyers says he turned down a plea in a public corruption probe tied to a sludge hauling contract.

Sam Riddle Jr. tells WDIV-TV he has not accepted a deal offered by federal authorities.

He also tells WJBK-TV he is "worried" about the FBI investigation into a council-approved $47 million contract with Houston-based Synagro.

A person has told The Associated Press that Conyers is the "Council Member A" listed in a court document as receiving more than $6,000 for her fall 2007 vote on the sludge contract. She has not been charged.

The information comes from a person with knowledge of the investigation who asked not to be named because the person was not authorized to speak publicly.

It must be that the Detroit Free Press and the Associated Press thought that all of their readers already knew that Mrs. Conyers is a Democrat, and more significantly, the wife of Congressman John Conyers.

(Indeed, Mr. Conyers is the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.)

Or maybe they find it hard to believe that a Democrat and the wife of such a powerful man would settle for such a measly $6,000 bribe.

  1. Are you suggesting, Sir, that there is political bias in this vaunted media mouthpiece??

Ensign prominently identified as Republican wedding vow cheat\ in very first sentence of AP ‘report’.

    But Conyers? Who dat party?

If a thing is absent, then we knows Who Dat Party. .

“Talk to the Hand!” madam, is not an adequate defense. Oh wait! Conyers lives in Detroit! Never mind.

(I’m starting to understand why John Conyers sounds like such a wimp).

Gotta say, I love this gal. She’s so entertaining. If she’s not punching out some other woman (who dissed her) in a brawl, she’s cursing out other elected officials (ha!) in a proceeding. She’s a reality show waiting to happen. But what network would have the guts? Don’t you want to see their home life? I’ll bet John toes the line.

And the point about Monica – the wife of one of the most powerful committee heads in the US govt – accepting such a tiny bribe is just the icing on the cake. She doesn’t need that penny-ante grift, but she’s such a natural hoodlum she can’t help herself.

Indeed, you can always play “name that party”…if the name of the person’s political affiliation does not appear in the first two sentences, you can be assured that you are talking about a dimocrat. In the dreariness that is Michigan these days, and in particular Detroit, perhaps Ms. Conyers keeps getting re-elected to be comic relief on the City Council. Why should she accept a plea deal? Most likely she will be acquitted by a jury of her peers…no way she’ll be found guilty by any jury in Detroit. It’s easy to see why her ever-lovin’ hubby prefers living in DC rather than being home with her!

You would think they might say to themselves…..” Now that we have power, let’s make sure that justice is equitable, and show the world how decent people govern.”

Instead, they say…..”Now that we have power, revenge has begun. We’ll make their corruption look like playschool.”

This may sound racist but it is MY opinion ………… I have noticed that for all the advances Blacks have made in politics in the past 40 years, the most part have been criminal!! I know I’m not the only one who is noticing this. Look around and check out those in power. They are crazy with it and demand more till they are over their heads in it. Then when caught with their hands in the sugar bowl they scream racism and whitey is out to get them. Then they pull the ever popular, “It’s us against them” ploy.

I am not saying all Blacks play this game but if you look at both parties you will find that ALL democratic blacks have this ploy in their portfolio and have used it at least once in their illustrious careers.
    Just saying……………..

I’m not sure I would have expressed it as starkly as you have LD, put I have had something of the same thought wandering through my head at times.

As the product of a very liberal upbringing in the Los Angeles area (in the mid 60’s) I remember that all the marches, protests, etc, were to bring EQUALITY. Equal housing, equal employment and jobs. To do away with anti negro (yes it was still ok to call them negros then) sentiment of any kind. As Martin Luther King said, we were to judge a man by the content of his soul, not the color of his skin.

And somehow somewhere, the race pimps crawled out from under their rocks and began the victimology drumroll. Now it’s all about inequality, and predjudice, if blacks do not get more resourses for less effort or no effort it’s racist. If blacks are not excused racially motivated violence it’s racist. When a natural disasters effect on a city is enormously magnified by the bumbling self interest of its black mayor, it’s the racism of the white president of the country.

When an incompitant manchurian candidate (who happens to be half arab/black) runs for the office of president on a ticket of thinly veiled racism and unicorns, it’s racism not to vote for him.

The explanation that I often get when pointing these things out is that “as a white person, we can never fully understand the terrible demeaning experience of being black” therefore, “we must have empathy and overlook all racism and antisocial behaviour of black people” (we don’t call them negroes anymore).

We (as white people) owe them power, free reign of their corruption and an eternal pass for as much racism as they personally feel they want to impose on the white (and yes, the hispanic) people of this country. In short, we as non black, owe them. Big time.
Myself, who’s ancestors crawled out of the coal mines of Wales and famine struck villages of Germany in the early 1900’s owes them.

I’m not buying any bridges and I’m not buying that load of bullsquat either.

Who cares how it sounds? Any comments made regarding the wrongdoings of any protected victim group is going to elicit howls of racism. I honestly don’t give a damn if I hit a nerve anymore, screw ’em.

Pro – Kiera Bell 8th grader should get a medal for her clarity & poise while dealing with Ms. Conyers. Who’s the adult here?

Here’s the link of the vid where she takes on this lunatic. It’s about 3:00 minutes in, but you should see the set up before. Great job Kid!

  10. Grassy Knoll says:

Conyers is a major part of one of the most bizarre groups of people I have ever seen – the Detroit City Council. I thought maybe she was just a noodlehead, but she is also a criminal. What a shock! And she loves to play the race card. And speaking of the race card, Rev, Jackson was in town (Detroit) recently and a crowd of nearly 150 showed up to hear him speak. How the mighty have fallen.

  11. Enthalpy says:

Monica should be given just one option in this: she should spend many years under the supervision of the United States Penal System making little rocks out of big rocks.
