In 1974 I had a summer job working for the IRS in Boston. I was only some 19 yo art student but even so I had enormous power to fix penalties, attach salaries, take people's houses, cars, boats etc if they had in some way contravened our nation's incomprehensible tax laws. I hated that job. It was so depressing; I had grown men crying down the phone, begging and pleading with me, calling me "sir" and "Mr Artboy", telling me all their problems...just awful.

Anyway, the point is that at no time in my training was I told that "I forgot" was an acceptable reason for failure to file, quite the contrary in fact. That kind of statement would have triggered a much wider investigation to try to discover what else an individual might have "forgotten" about but again , these were just ordinary Americans, not priviledged glitterati like Tom Daschole and Tiny Tim Geithner, so screw them, right?

It's amazing.

The scandels have come so fast and furious that the Bill Richardson fiasco has fallen off the radar.

Today, the Moron is backtracking after one limp-wristed salvo in the Democrat's trade war because those forbidding Europeans gave him the stink eye. He's about mastered his surrendering technique and it's only 15 days into his misadministration.

Bonus: here's a hilarious campaign ad for Tom Dashole

"Don’t tell me the Democrats can be shamed over just a little tax cheating and lobbying.

There must be a lot more to the story."

I think the Obama will use Daschle as an excuse when the health care reform act doesn't pass.

Obama, 2010: "My good friend Tom would've gotten this act passed. But some people couldn't look past an honest mistake. I want to take back what I said in February of last year when I said 'I screwed up'. Well, I never screwed up. Daschle was the right person for the job."

I WOULD LOVE to forgive him, let him pay what he needs to, and get on to the business of fixing our country's problems.....

BUT

These scumbag lawyers, politicians (lawyers), prosecutors (lawyers) and judges (also lawyers) lower the HAMMER on the common person whenever they get the opportunity. There is no mercy for us, unless you call running up the charges, and then blackmailing the defendant into lesser charges instead of blowing all his dough defending himself.

All the court system hears is "ching ching ching ching ching" of our money, fueling their corrupt injustice system.

Daschole, should be in prison, where, trying to defend himself from getting shived in the back, he kills an inmate, then gets 20 years tacked onto his original light sentence.

No, no no, this guy tries to act like he is falling on his sword to save the blessed Obama from embarrassment, (and Obama falling on his sword to save face for a fellow lawyer) instead of admitting he may be a crook himself.

Screw 'em....he should be in prison, where 100% of the rest of us would be if we didn't pay $128,000 in taxes.

“I’m frustrated with myself”...“I take responsibility for this mistake"

Why is it every time this guy speaks he sounds like he just stepped out of a bad Dale Carnegie seminar? I guess if you have never actually been in charge of anything or had to make a real decision, you resort to trying to make it sound like you have a clue.

This train wreck began even faster than I had expected. If the Senate kills the Democrat Payoff Bill, even his worshippers in the msm may not be able to spin the Messiah back to savior status.

Chris Wallace: "Would you have continued to back him?"

Obama: "uh bah uh bah bah bah, I da do don't wanna ta to get into to any hypothetical's question...."

That's as close I could get it transcripted. Maybe Fox can get the blooper "hypothectical's questions" instead of "hypothectical questions". I think Obama could have at least speculated the easy question.

.........accepting “with sadness and regret”...........

This is one of the few believable things he has said of late. Obama is sad and regretful that Daschel got caught. Beyond that, he doesn't give a shit!

Oh, it gets better.

From the AP:

Obama: 'I screwed up' in handling of Daschle tax issue

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is taking responsibility for mistakes in the handling of the tax controversy that led to Tom Daschle's withdrawal as Obama's nominee to be health and human services secretary, saying: "I screwed up." The president did a series of back-to-back television interviews in which the subject of failed nominees was a top subject.

Obama told NBC "I'm frustrated with myself" for unintentionally sending a message that there are "two sets of rules" for paying taxes, "one for prominent people and one for ordinary folks." "I take responsibility for this mistake," he told Fox News.

Earlier today, Daschle withdrew as President Barack Obama's nominee to be health and human services secretary, dealing potential blows to both speedy health care reform and Obama's hopes for a smooth start in the White House.

"Now we must move forward," Obama said in a written statement accepting "with sadness and regret" Daschle's request to be removed from consideration.

A day earlier, Obama had said he "absolutely" stood by Daschle in the face of problems over back taxes and potential conflicts of interest.

The stunning Daschle development came less than three hours after another Obama nominee also withdrew from consideration, and also over tax problems. Nancy Killefer, nominated by Obama to be the government's first chief performance officer, said she didn't want her bungling of payroll taxes on her household help to be a distraction.

"They both recognized that you can't set an example of responsibility but accept a different standard of who serves," said White House press secretary Robert Gibbs.

Daschle, the former Senate Democratic leader, a strong and early backer of Obama's presidential bid and a close Obama friend, said he would have been unable to operate "with the full faith of Congress and the American people."

"I am not that leader, and will not be a distraction" to Obama's agenda, he said.

Obama had given Daschle two jobs — to be White House health czar on top of the post leading the Health and Human Services Department — and Daschle is relinquishing both.

The developments called into question whether Obama will be able to move as quickly as he has promised on sweeping health care reform — one of the pillars of his first 100 days agenda and expected to be among the hardest to accomplish.

"It really sets us back a step," said Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill. "Because he was such a talent. I mean he understood Congress, serving in the House and Senate; he certainly had the confidence of the president." …

http://rockymountainnews.com/news/2009/feb/03/daschle-withdraws-nomination/

Of course it still doesn't change the fact that Rangel and Geithner paid their back taxes only when caught, and completely penalty-free.

But I guess having the man who didn't pay taxes in charge of the IRS isn't an example of setting "an example of responsibility" but accepting "a different standard of who serves."

The real question is why these people are withdrawing.

The results we've seen to date is that things like the failure to pay taxes are revealed, the press generally ignores it, and both Democrats and Republicans unanimously approve the nomination anyway.

So there's got to be more here than meets the eye, as I doubt either Daschle or Killefer would have received a single "no" vote on their confirmations.

"President Barack Obama's spokesman is defending the administration's ethical standards.
Robert Gibbs told reporters Tuesday, "The bar that we set is the highest that any administration in the country has ever set."

But after the 3rd round, even the tallest drinkers find it hard to keep their elbows on the bar.

You know, when you think about it, Hillary would be showing a lot more balls than Obama. Imagine the rage, the feined indignation we'd be enduring right now of this the latest example of "Politics of Personal Destruction".
