Dem Congressman ‘Assaults’ A Student

From YouTube:

Unless there is a lot more to this story than meets the eye, Mr. Bob Etheridge, Democrat Congressman from North Carolina, appears to have assaulted (and battered) a student journalist for simply asking him a question on a public street.

From the Raleigh, North Carolina ABC affiliate, WTVD:

Etheridge caught in on-camera confrontation

June 14, 2010

RALEIGH (WTVD) — North Carolina Congressman Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington) is taking heat after a conservative blogger posted video on YouTube showing him in a confrontation with men carrying cameras on a Washington street.

The story by Mike Flynn says the men were students. In the video, they ask the congressman if he supports the Obama agenda…

Etheridge’s reaction is to demand to know who the photographers are. He then gets physical. He grabs the camera from one man and then takes him by the wrist. In the video, the photographer’s faces are blurred and their identities aren’t given. They never identify themselves to the congressman other than to say they’re students working on a project.

When they continue to refuse to identify themselves, Etheridge grabs one around the neck and then the shoulders refusing to let him go. The man eventually slips Etheridge’s grasp and the video ends…

ABC11 has left messages with Etheridge’s office to get his side of the story about what happened. We’re waiting to hear back.

Meanwhile, Republicans are weighing in. National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Jon Thompson e-mailed a comment to ABC11:

“Bob Etheridge has lost it. His conduct is unbecoming of a member of Congress. It’s bad enough that he’s joined Obama’s assault on North Carolina jobs, but his physical assault on a college student goes beyond the pale.”

Note, too, that Mr. Etheridge takes the student’s cell phone away from him, and does not give it back.

So he appears to be a thief, as well as a lunatic.

Apparently, this clown was on his way to a fundraiser. Never impede a liberal in his quest for a handout.

    Enjoy your retirement, Congressman.

  2. GetBackJack says:

Haven’t the time right now to look into it, but Bob Etheridge sounds like he may have been in a Union somewhere in his past.

  3. mr_bill says:

Was the Congressman demanding the students’ “papers?”

  5. Reality Bytes says:

Funny you mention it Pro. 100’s in Congress endorsed Obama. Need we be concerned here?! How ’bout that Judo move the Congress put on that poor kid! Is this the courage & intellect we send to Washington?

  6. Rusty Shackleford says:

I find it interesting that the article seems to find that “failing to identify themselves” is perhaps the most egregious thing here. Say nothing of getting combative and physical, for which is only excusable if the congressman was somehow threatened with physical harm.

    Talk about thin-skinned.

To say nothing of the uproar had a republican acted this way.

But it will be ignored….obviously because the students with cameras were “obviously in the wrong” here.

When will we hear from Nancy Pelosi about our need to protect the children?

    • Mithrandir says:

Yes, she will probably automatically pull out the white lab coats, mothers cradling babies, sad puppy-dog face of some minority kid, scruff-bearded ‘everyman’ union guy,

and then say, “Ok, I’m set, what propaganda are we throwing out today?”

  8. U NO HOO says:

“So he appears to be a thief, as well as a lunatic.”

With all due respect SG the representative is a Democrat so your comment is utter stereotypical redundancy.

    HHHH (a toothy smile)

  9. Right of the People says:

Welcome to the new world order. This is just a preview of what will happen if a peon dares to question one of the privileged classes.

  10. BobonStatenIsland says:

Too bad that student was so intimidated by the older, taller Congressman. I think most adults would have given him maybe three seconds to let go of the wrist after being told to do so before kicking out the good Democrat representative’s knee cap. Etheridge got away with that one (except for the video tape).

  11. untrainable says:

Don’t ask me questions you insufferable little bastard. I’ll have you arrested for Journalism. I thought he’d be more likely to say “Do you know who I AM?”, rather than asking the reporter for his credentials. It’s the more egocentric response.

This scenerio would be laughable if it didn’t reflect the general regard our elected officials have for their constituents. The only good press, is a government controlled press. Just wait for it.

    • Mithrandir says:

Just think how the democrats would react if the press hounded them like the left-wing press does? Code Pink, Cindy Sheehan . . .

Wow, they would lose their minds!

Oh, and since when is it “HIS RIGHT” to know ANYONE’S name on the street?

  12. Crapgame13 says:

So I guess he had a “George Allen moment?”

    • untrainable says:

Only if by that you mean he just kissed the rest of his political career goodbye. I don’t remember George roughing up anyone. He just pulled the ole “open mouth, insert foot” gag. I wonder what a democrat would have to stick in his mouth to get booted from the party. The truth maybe??

    • mr_bill says:

      There’s really no equivalency there.

I don’t recall George Allen physically assaulting a private citizen or stealing private property. Its probably a good thing he didn’t call the tracker a clean, articulate, man with no negro dialect (unless he wants one), he might have had a future as a democrat. Maybe if Allen had only suggested the Jews go back to Poland, he could have got some face time with nerobama. Of course, lets not overlook the anti-Semetic swipes the liberals took at Mr. Allen.

The whole “macaca” slur was an invention of the darling left wing media, who spent days looking for a derogatory meaning to the word and were finally able to find one (sort of) in an obscure 15th century flemish corruption of a buntu word: macaque, meaning monkey. If the media darlings had spent a tenth as much time vetting the current president, we probably would not be suffering his pestillence at the moment.

Etheridge’s behavior is indefensible. God forbid somebody should actually ask a question of an elected representative. Congressional dipsticks like Etheridge, Peloser, Dingy Harry, Bawny Fwank, Charlie Rangel, and the rest of nerobamas wrecking crew have convinced themselves that they are better than us pleebs and are not responsible to us. We are only here to keep the money coming into Congress so they can pi$$ it away on whatever scheme they have cooked up at the moment.

We all know the lame stream media will give Etheridge a pass and crucify the students for having the audacity to ask the Congressman a question on his political beliefs on a public street. I’ve even read some liberals awarding “victim” status to the congressman, already. Of course, perpetual victimhood is the calling card of a true lick-spittle, nutless, liberal. Same thing as George Allen? Not so much.

The word “macaca” does not even appear in the Oxford English Language Dictionary, which is considered the definitive English dictionary.

      And it is 20 volumes.

  13. CKP says:

Mr. Etheridge must have had great parenting skills. Bully.

  14. wardmama4 says:

This is one time I actually think a good lawsuit is in order – Hey isn’t Ann Coulter a lawyer? Imagine just how crazy that would make Obama! And Rush could do the play by play every day on his radio show and then Glenn could do the tv in the evening and then We The People could watch Obama spontaneously combust. from the sheer conservatism of the whole event.

This stuff would be funny – if it weren’t the greatest country in the World being presented as a bunch of thugs, idiots (Guam is going to tip over) and liars (anything Obama has said, ever) on a juvenile punking of anyone who believes in America, God and FREEDOM.

Pray for Obama – Psalm 109: 8 – Let his days be few. Let another take his office.

    God Help America.

  15. manray favjet says:

Etheridge is the former state school superintendent for NC.

He’s one of the reasons NC schools suck.

He’s bought and paid for by the teachers unions.

Washington post has edited the video. It’s mostly blank screen with the young man repeatedly asking him to let him go.

In the unedited version he appears to take the man’s cell phone and walk away.

The WAPO blogger refers to it as a “hug’.

    • canary says:

Rusty he appeared drunk & paranoid to me. How did His apology makes no sense, how is asking a question make the students partisan?
ooohhhh. Etheridge stole the students phone, and invaded the students privacy, calling phone numbers and barking “who are you! who is this! ”
Those students deserve to get an A for effort. I hope they are partisan and file charges against Etheridge, for the good of the country.
Maybe other students Etheridge assaulted when he was a teacher and stupiderintendent will come forward. He needs anger management course.

  16. JulieJ says:

Macaca or Macaco is Portuguese for monkey. I doubt that Allen even knew what it meant. The point is that the Washington Post persecuted him over the word and handed the election to Jim Webb, the phony with the bad toupee. Also note, the anti-Semitic slurs stated about Allen when it was discovered that his mother had hidden her Judaism because her family had been deported during WWII, not an uncommon reaction. But don’t forget: the libs have very high morals and values (sac tag on).

    • proreason says:

      Libs are notoriously anti-semetic.

They hide their racism against blacks more effectively. Rather than being overt, it’s by ommission. For example, go find Uberdumbkoff’s black staffers. You can probably come up with 1 or 2 for a show requiring a staff of dozens.

Go find out the % of University presidents who have been black in the last 10 years.

Go find out the % of Union top-management who have been black in the last 10 years.

Go find out the % of Slimes day-to-day reporters (excluding sports writers) who have been black.

      etc., etc.

A lunatic? Yes. A thief? No, at least not the camera/phone. I doubt Etheridge uploaded that first video.

    • Steve says:

      Good point.

Though if a thief gives a thing back after taking it, he can still be considered a thief.

  18. canary says:

Perhaps Etheridge is into something illegal, and paranoid about it, or drunk. He had no legal right or authority to know the names of the students or lay a hand on them. They were in public.
This is worse than when Obama stabbed Keyes in the chest with his pointing finger.

  19. Reality Bytes says:

Wouldn’t it be great if the libs were half as tough on Iran & NK?

  20. Reality Bytes says:

And the “Big Time”(a) Award goes to Cong. Bob Etheridge (D. N. Carolina)…for the biggest “Major League Asshole” (b) Award for uhm well, being a Major League Asshole.

This made the hair all over my body stand on end. Seriously, this is some real scary stuff. Time to do unto them before they do unto us.

  22. Mithrandir says:

Chances that this Democrat will be charged with a crime like the rest of us? ZERO!

    Right; a snowball’s chance . .
Here comes martial law unless we act fast; and we still might not prevent it.

  24. Rusty Shackleford says:

After looking at this a few times, thinking about it then watching them again, it appears the congressman is a “functioning alcoholic”. I’d be willing to give him a pass if he’s a diabetic. From personal experience, the symptoms of a blood sugar low are similar to drunkenness and inability to act rationally. But that’s all I’d give him.

So, to be fair, much as I don’t like his actions at all, let’s see if he is, in fact a diabetic, or….if he was drunk. Or….(drum roll please) if they try to explain it away via many of the ethereal mysticisms that were so prevalent with Bill-Jeff Clinton.

I am in no way expecting that he has a reasonable excuse but….again to be fair, after having a COP who was uneducated in the ways of diabetes, wanting to throw me in the slammer for drunkenness, yet not understanding why the breathalyzer read 0.0 multiple times, I am inclined to give this guy the benefit of the doubt, for now.

Yes, I, too am grateful that others came to my rescue; Specifically a doctor who I will never know.

Sooo, let’s wait and see how this pans out. Should definitely be interesting.

Update: Etheridge has issued an apology

But it is lacking in sincerity and does not explain his actions or justify his behavior. Therefore, at this time, I am making a preliminary conclusion that he is NOT a diabetic.

Not that I was hoping for a “beer summit” either.

    • BigOil says:

Rusty – I’m not sure how this loser can be cut even an inch of slack for his actions.

He has been granted power over our lives. In the last year and a half, this democrap has wielded that power by subverting the Constitution and stealing our liberties. If that alone were not a bad enough abuse of power, a mere serf dares ask this elitist pos a simple question and is greeted with assault and battery.

This clown should be held to a higher standard, yet he can not even achieve a minimum standard for civility. He should be charged with battery and resign immediately. Of course, we all know this will not happen because he is a member of the democrat ruling class.

It’s long past time to say enough is enough. No excuses. No apologies. There should be a no tolerance policy for abuse of power…Period.

    • canary says:

His head was kind of staggering like he was drunk. How did he know the students were partisan? ooohhh. He must have gone through their phone, calling numbers demanding to know who they were.
Perhaps some students of the former stupiderintendent Etheridge will come forward and give more insight to this maniac.
I’d press charges if I were those students, especially since he labeled them partisan.

  25. Nimblicity says:

Q: “Do you support the Obama agenda?”

A: “In answer to your question, I am going to make sure I can retaliate and intimidate you using whatever information I obtain by demanding ‘Who are you? Tell me who you are!’ (while I arrogantly use brute force to bully you like I’m your big brother on a bad day).”

…We’ll take that as a pretty solid “Yes.”
